Former Northern Ireland leader Ian Paisley in hospital
Feb 6, 2012, 18:44 GMT
London - Ian Paisley, the church minister and former Protestant leader who dominated Northern Ireland politics for decades, is in hospital suffering acute heart problems, his family said Monday.
The 85-year-old Free Presbyterian Church minister and former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) was rushed to hospital in Belfast Sunday, a statement released by his wife said.
After decades of fighting any rapprochement between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland, Paisley performed a remarkable political U-turn in 2007 when he became First Minister in a power-sharing government between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, a post he held until June, 2008.
He retired from his religious ministry at the end of last month.
