Clinton hammers on Obama's gun, religion remarks

Washington - Pennsylvania, site of the next clash over the Democratic presidential nomination, is a state of somewhat-rusting industry and farming spread among small towns where people go to church on Sundays and love to hunt and fish.
In recent weeks, Senator Barack Obama, 46, has been steadily closing on the double-digit lead that Senator Hillary Clinton, 60, once held among the working-class, largely white Democratic voters of the state - one of the last hopes for rescuing her floundering candidacy.
But over the weekend, a firestorm grew over Obama's comments about small towns in Pennsylvania and their values. He told people at a San Francisco fundraiser that voters in these towns were 'bitter' over their economic malaise and might be sceptical about a message of promise 'delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama.'
Obama is the first African-American to be within reach of the White House, and leads Clinton, seeking to be the first woman, by about 164 delegate votes. At the nominating convention in August in Denver, Colorado, the candidate needs 2,024 votes.
'It's not surprising ... they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them, or anti- immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,' he was quoted as saying of Pennsylvania small town voters on the Huffington Post website.
By Saturday, Clinton's troops were out in full force, flooding blogs and e-mails and calling Obama 'elitist' and 'condescending.'
The mayors of Scranton, Sharon, Bethlehem, Wilkes-Barre and Harrisburg told reporters in a phone-in press conference that Obama had trounced the very essence of their state.
'It's telling to me that these remarks were made several thousand miles away from us at a very expensive fundraising campaign event in a very upscale location when he did not think that any of us were ever going to hear what he had to say,' said Mayor Steve Reed of Harrisburg.
Obama defended his remarks on the campaign trail in Indiana, saying people were frustrated with lack of health care, lost jobs and Washington's ineffectiveness, and thus they voted on 'issues like guns' and 'gay marriage' and took 'refuge in their faith.'
In an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal on Saturday, Obama said he 'deeply' regretted any offense, then defended the 'underlying truth' of what he said.
Both Clinton and the presumed Republican candidate John McCain hammered Obama over his remarks.
'The people of faith I know don't 'cling to' religion because they're bitter,' Clinton said in Indianapolis, Indiana Saturday. 'People embrace faith ... because they are spiritually rich.'
The fracas injected new life into the six-week lull between the last primary voting in early March and the upcoming Pennsylvania vote. Other controversies in the period have included radical anti- white marks made by Obama's pastor in Chicago, and Hillary's exaggeration of danger during a visit to Bosnia in the 1990s.
Polling puts Clinton 7.3 percentage points ahead of Obama in Pennsylvania, according to an average of nine polls calculated by the internet website, realclearpolitics.com.
Clinton must win Pennsylvania to prove she can capture the major states in general elections on November 4, when Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and California - all states she has won - weigh heavy in the electoral college.
While Obama's strength is seen in Pennsylvania's two major cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Clinton's lies in the swath of small farming, mining and industrial towns that were home to the so-called Reagan Democrats during the 1980s.
Mayor Robert Lucas of Sharon, Pennsylvania, speculated that Obama might be building a case to explain 'why he lost Pennsylvania. Because we're bitter people.'
'The furthest thing from the truth is that we are bitter,' Lucas said. 'Those churches weren't built because we're bitter and we don't go to church because we are bitter. We don't go up to the mountains to hunt because we are bitter.'
Pennsylvania holds the largest remaining group of delegates among the seven states that have yet to hold primary elections or caucuses.
The candidates face off on the issue of religion on a special CNN forum after 0005 GMT Monday.

It is, most certainly, a disappointing set of comments from such a promising young man. I was dismayed at how he came to these conclusions, but the poster above certainly has a point in that he clearly attends a church which preaches such things. I can see how easy it would be to apply this to any community, but it makes one arrive at the conclusion that he is either very naive or not very bright.

Remember, in that speech on race -- the greatest speech since Abraham Lincoln -- he first seemed to allow that white Americans had legitimate complaints about affirmative action and black crime rates, but then claimed those frustrations were actually misdirected anger about corporations.
This is pure leftist cant -- it's all 'false consciousness' stuff, all what our Corporate Masters want us to think, playing us all against each other as they line their pockets with our sweat and tears.
Guns, border security, even religion itself aren't really legitimate points of interest. Instead they're all part of the 'culture of fear' indoctrinated into us by the corporate emperors really running this country.

Anyone who doesn't live in an urban center without 2 Starbucks per block is an ill-read hick and anyone who believes in God or the 2nd Amendment is an angry, frustrated potential abortion clinic bomber. Well, it has finally happened. Barack Obama has done what Democratic candidates for president invariably do — he has revealed the profound sense of unearned superiority that is the sad and persistent hallmark of contemporary liberalism. Obama’s statement today that small-town folk “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations” may be the most distilled example of this train of thought I’ve ever seen.
Obama’s astonishing sentence offers a syllogistic string of superciliousness: Gun ownership is equated with religious fanaticism, which is said to accompany hatred of the other in the form of opposition to immigration and support for trade barriers. It drips with an attitude so important to the spiritual well-being of the American liberal — the paternalistic attitude that says, “Oh, well, people only do thing differently from me because they are ignorant and superstitious and backward” — that it has survived and thrived despite the suicidal impact it has had on the achievement of liberal political goals and aims.
Today Obama says his words were 'ill-chosen' and that he 'didn't say it as well as I should have.' Say what as well as he should have? That rural white America clings to guns and religious because of bitterness? That these people don't exercise their First and Second Amendment rights in a manner he finds pleasing, and that the only explanation is years of neglect by the federal government has left them superstitious and backward? There is no right way to say that.
The icing on top is that the audience for whom these comments were intended, the snobbish San Francisco elite that leads the Democratic wing of the Democratic party, will defend them as some kind of hard truth. Like Podhoretz says, they just can't help themselves.

I'm about done with Obama over this mill-closures-drive-small-town-losers-to-guns-and-God business. If you're running as a glamorous blank slate on which people project their own utopian fantasies, you've got to be very careful not to give the game away - especially when the game turns out to be the usual cliched elite disdain for the great unwashed. I mention in the current issue of NR how odd it is that Michelle Obama is in many ways more condescending on the stump than Teresa Heinz Kerry. Now her husband's at it, too. As Ed Driscoll says:

Quite. I had a ton of fun covering Kerry's awkwardness with Americans but, in fairness, it was essentially a consumerist snobbery: he preferred the Newburgh Yacht Club for lunch over the local Wendy's, he'd rather be windsurfing off Nantucket than rednecking at Nascar, etc. Obama's snobbery seems more culturally profound, and unlike Kerry he can't plead the crippling disadvantage of a priviliged childhood. Rather, Barack's condescension reveals a man out of touch with the rhythms of American life to a degree that's hard to fathom. As Michelle says, they 'chose' to 'leave corporate America', and Barack became a 'community organizer' and she wound up a 350-grand-a-year 'diversity outreach coordinator'. I've no idea what either of those careers involve, and most of us seem able to get along without them. But their remoteness from the American mainstream perhaps explains why the Obamas seem to have no clue how Americans live their lives.
And yes, I'm a foreigner. But it takes one to know one, and this guy seems weirdly disconnected from everything except neo-segregationist Afrocentric grievance politics and upscale white liberal condescension. Not much of a coalition.

Hillary Clinton is getting a big boost from Obama's bitterness fumble. Her case that he is unelectable got a lot easier to make, and she doesn't even have to mention race. Not that Hillary ever gave anyone (except maybe Chelsea) the warm and fuzzies, but she has decades' more practice at hiding her disdain for ordinary folk. After all, moving from Wellesley to Yale to the Watergate hearings, and then going to Arkansas as a politicians' wife must have been quite a baptism of fire when it comes to camouflaging condescension.
The Party of the Little Guy appears to be caught in what Marxists like to call a contradiction. Their rhetoric is all about compassion and helping, and taking care of the unfortunate. But their political philosophy is anchored in elitism: the notion that the government (and the elites running it) know better than Everyman what is good for him. The entire 'What's the Matter with Kansas' hypothesis rests on the assumption that people are too dumb to understand the complexities of politics, just mindlessly reacting on the basis of false consciousness to the Rovian deceptions of the alternatively idiotic/brilliant GOP.
The first two presidential elections of the new century saw pompous Democrat badidates narrowly losing to George W. Bush, who is regarded on the left as having no conceivable person to whom he might condescend. A regular baseball-loving, pretzel-eating kind of guy so unlike Al Gore and especially the haughty, serial wealth-marrying John Kerry.
Now here it is 2008, and the Dems have given their hearts over to a black guy raised without a father. That must have seemed like a great idea at the time they were caucusing in places like Wyoming. Off-the-Record Obama

Senator Barack Obama finds himself in the midst of a controversy in the aftermath of comments that he made at a private fundraiser in San Francisco on April 6, during which he explained his difficulty appealing to working-class voters in Pennsylvania. He said, “It’s not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment. . . .”
Senator Obama’s words are significant because they were said off-the-record, meaning they provided a more authentic glimpse into the attitudes of Obama than a carefully scripted event. Nonetheless, his words were not merely careless; his comments were based on a carefully constructed, if deeply condescending, explanation.
Beneath the enormous charm and cool persona of Obama beats the heart of an arrogant man. With increasing frequency, the 46-year-old one-term senator from Illinois orates as though he resides at Olympian Heights. By his presumptuous demeanor, he suggests that he sees what no one else sees, and can do what no other person can do; he is America’s healing balm.
Even his efforts at damage control radiate arrogance. Speaking in Muncie, Indiana, after the story broke, Obama said “Lately, there has been a little, typical sort of political flare-up because I said something that everybody knows is true, which is that there are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania, in towns right here in Indiana, in my home town in Illinois who are bitter.”
The flare-up, you see, happened because Obama is the Great Truth-Teller amidst the masses, many of whom can’t handle the truth. Once it dawned on Obama’s aides that expediency demanded an apology, the Senator offered a qualified mea culpa: “Obviously, if I worded things in a way that made people offended, I deeply regret that.”
So if Senator Obama worded things in a way that made people feel offended (rather than worded things in a way that is offensive), well, he regrets that.
And at last night’s “Compassion Forum,” hosted by CNN, Obama accused his critics of “misconstruing . . . [his] words” effectively turning the tables on those who take issue with his comments. In Obama’s construal, he is the offended party, and any criticism directed at him is a mere “distraction” from the real issues of the campaign. This method of damage control, as that displayed in the Reverend Wright controversy, implies that simply by questioning the candidate, one is out of line, unfashionable, and uncouth.
I suspect these comments will be quite damaging to Obama because they reinforce (in spite of his efforts to equivocate during this campaign) his conventional liberalism. In this case, though, it’s not simply a matter of him being liberal on economic or domestic issues; it demonstrates that he is a cultural liberal, which has been a particularly lethal charge in presidential elections. It is another brush stroke on the canvas of a man who burst onto the national scene less than four years ago and about whom we know very little. But with every passing week, it seems, we are learning more about the Man of Hope.
On a deeper level, what we saw in Obama’s comments is a glimpse into a particular worldview, one that animates his political philosophy (contemporary liberalism). Senator Obama seems to view ordinary Americans as bitter, often broken, small-minded objects of pity rather than anger, ostensibly in need of instruction from — you guessed it — Barack Obama. The words of Michelle Obama are worth recalling in this context. She has spoken about her husband pushing us out of our “comfort zones,” saying “Barack knows at some level there is a hole in our souls” and “Barack is the only person in this race who understands that before we can work on the problems as a nation, we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation.”
This is the Politics of Meaning on steroids. If one views Americans as fundamentally needy children rather than competent citizens, one embraces the precepts of the nanny state — the state that (in Margaret Thatcher’s memorable phrase) takes too much from you in order to do too much for you. This provides an enormous opening for Senator McCain, who can frame this election as pitting a candidate who believes in self-government, against a candidate who believes in the nanny state.
ncreasingly, Barack Obama appears to be the Candidate of Illusion. He presents himself as post-racial — which is harder to accept than it once was, given his intimate, longtime relationship with a pastor and church that harbor deep and obvious racial anger toward whites. Obama presents himself as post-partisan — even though in his time in the Senate he has done nothing to bridge the partisan divide, which explains why he has been endorsed by the rabidly partisan MoveOn.org. Obama presents himself as post-ideological — even though he was named the Senate’s most liberal member in 2007 by the respected National Journal. Obama is a public critic of free trade — yet his chief economic adviser is quoted by a Canadian official as saying that Obama’s position on NAFTA is politically motivated and insincere. Obama speaks about the importance of religious faith in his life and the life of the nation — yet when speaking to a group of rich liberals, he implicitly denigrates people of faith, pairing them with people who have “antipathy to people who aren’t like them” and who harbor “anti-immigrant sentiment[s].” He paints religious believers as folks clinging to crutches to better deal with their desperate lives — only to insist last night that his words were actually a tribute to people of religious faith. So sayeth Barack Obama, “healer of broken souls.”
Early on in this campaign I was impressed with Barack Obama as a thoughtful, inspiring, and admirable (if far too liberal) political figure. As the months have worn on, it’s become increasingly apparent that the candidate is projecting mere shadows on the wall. Our Republic deserves better.

My occasion for spending a little time once again with the old Communist was Barack Obama’s now-famous comment at an April 6 San Francisco fund-raiser. Obama was explaining his trouble winning over small-town, working-class voters: “It’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
This sent me to Marx’s famous statement about religion in the introduction to his “Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right”:
“Religious suffering is at the same time an expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the sentiment of a heartless world, and the soul of a soulless condition. It is the opium of the people.”
Or, more succinctly, and in the original German in which Marx somehow always sounds better: “Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes.”
Now, this is a point of view with a long intellectual pedigree prior to Marx, and many vocal adherents continuing into the 21st century. I don’t believe the claim is true, but it’s certainly worth considering, in college classrooms and beyond.
But it’s one thing for a German thinker to assert that “religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature.” It’s another thing for an American presidential candidate to claim that we “cling to ... religion” out of economic frustration.
And it’s a particularly odd claim for Barack Obama to make. After all, in his speech at the 2004 Democratic convention, he emphasized with pride that blue-state Americans, too, “worship an awesome God.”
What’s more, he’s written eloquently in his memoir, “Dreams From My Father,” of his own religious awakening upon hearing the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s “Audacity of Hope” sermon, and of the complexity of his religious commitment. You’d think he’d do other believers the courtesy of assuming they’ve also thought about their religious beliefs.
But Obama in San Francisco does no courtesy to his fellow Americans. Look at the other claims he makes about those small-town voters.
Obama ascribes their anti-trade sentiment to economic frustration — as if there are no respectable arguments against more free-trade agreements. This is particularly cynical, since he himself has been making those arguments, exploiting and fanning this sentiment that he decries. Aren’t we then entitled to assume Obama’s opposition to Nafta and the Colombian trade pact is merely cynical pandering to frustrated Americans?
Then there’s what Obama calls “anti-immigrant sentiment.” Has Obama done anything to address it? It was John McCain, not Obama, who took political risks to try to resolve the issue of illegal immigration by putting his weight behind an attempt at immigration reform.
Furthermore, some concerns about unchecked and unmonitored illegal immigration are surely legitimate. Obama voted in 2006 (to take just one example) for the Secure Fence Act, which was intended to control the Mexican border through various means, including hundreds of miles of border fence. Was Obama then just accommodating bigotry?
As for small-town Americans’ alleged “antipathy to people who aren’t like them”: During what Obama considers the terrible Clinton-Bush years of economic frustration, by any measurement of public opinion polling or observed behavior, Americans have become far more tolerant and respectful of minorities who are not “like them.” Surely Obama knows this. Was he simply flattering his wealthy San Francisco donors by casting aspersions on the idiocy of small-town life?
That leaves us with guns. Gun ownership has been around for an awfully long time. And people may have good reasons to, and in any case have a constitutional right to, own guns — as Obama himself has been acknowledging on the campaign trail, when he presents himself as more sympathetic to gun owners than a typical Democrat.
What does this mean for Obama’s presidential prospects? He’s disdainful of small-town America — one might say, of bourgeois America. He’s usually good at disguising this. But in San Francisco the mask slipped. And it’s not so easy to get elected by a citizenry you patronize.
And what are the grounds for his supercilious disdain? If he were a war hero, if he had a career of remarkable civic achievement or public service — then he could perhaps be excused an unattractive but in a sense understandable hauteur. But what has Barack Obama accomplished that entitles him to look down on his fellow Americans?
A Lapsed Principle
What happened to Barack Obama's promise to rely on public financing in the general election?
BARACK OBAMA held out the hope of salvaging part of the public financing system for presidential elections. Now he seems poised to drive a nail into it by rejecting the $85 million available to nominees who agree to take full federal funding for the general election. That may be understandable as a matter of campaign tactics; Mr. Obama sits atop a whirring money machine that appears capable of vacuuming up amounts far in excess of the federal check. But going back on his pledge to take public financing if the GOP nominee were to agree to do the same would be an unfortunate step -- and one that reflects badly on Mr. Obama.
When it was in Mr. Obama's interest to present himself as the ethical savior of an imperiled campaign finance system, he was happy to do so, especially since it didn't seem especially likely at the time that he'd be the nominee. But the real test of a candidate is whether he will stick by an announced principle even when that's against his own interest. Now Mr. Obama could become the first nominee since Watergate to run a campaign fueled entirely by private money.

We praised Mr. Obama last year when he asked the Federal Election Commission to let him raise private money for the general election but later give the money back and decide to participate in the public financing system if he were able to persuade the Republican nominee to do the same. In that circumstance, Mr. Obama's spokesman vowed, he would 'aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.' Well, the Republican nominee turns out to be John McCain, who agreed way back when to Mr. Obama's challenge. Where's Mr. Obama's aggressive pursuit now?
