Obama faces tough task in bridge-building to Latino voters

Washington - Convincing Latino voters could be a tough task for Barack Obama en route to the White House if he does not make himself better known among that community and explain clearly his plans for the largest ethnic minority in the United States.
That was the conclusion of a Hispanic Protestant leader in the US who was among 42 ministers of various ethnic backgrounds who met with Obama earlier this week in what was a first encounter for many of them.
The Hispanic vote could be a crucial factor in November's general elections, when Obama will face off against Republican presumptive nominee John McCain. The Latino community was strongly loyal to Obama's rival Hillary Clinton in the long fight for the Democratic Party nomination, which Obama clinched just last week.
In an interview in Spanish with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, Reverend Luis Cortes, the leader of the largest Hispanic Protestant organization in the country, Esperanza USA, complained that Obama 'is not saying how he would go about tackling the problem of immigration, which is the most important for the Hispanic community.'
According to Cortes, Obama's plans on immigration are good, 'but he does not talk about them because it would cost him enemies.'
Illegal immigration is a near-taboo subject for US politicians, given the country's polarization over the issue.
The reverend also noted that the African-American senator from Illinois failed to speak out on language policy, budgets for bilingual education and the future of small Hispanic-owned businesses.
'And those are the most important things for Hispanic people,' he stressed.
There are an estimated 45 million Latinos living in the United States, including 8.1 million Latino Protestants who are largely represented by Cortes' organization.
Cortes and other ministers expressed their reservations face to face with Obama on Tuesday at the closed-door meeting with Chicago.
'I told him, 'Senator, the truth is that we as a people do not know you, and your candidacy is raising a doubt for us, because we do not know what you are going to do and how you are going to reflect on the Hispanic people',' Cortes told dpa.
The Hispanic leader also demanded a greater presence for his community at the highest levels of Obama's campaign. Only Federico Pena - transport and energy secretary in former president Bill Clinton's administration - and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson are currently on board.
Cortes found Obama's response hardly satisfactory.
'He told me, 'Reverend, that is good advice and I will take it as such.' That was all. I went from Philadelphia to Chicago for that,' Cortes complained.
However, he did not take this as a sign of disrespect from Obama.
'I am waiting to see what it meant, what he told me. We do not know him, so I have no way to interpret what he told me,' the reverend said.
Still, Cortes believes Obama could win over the Latino vote ahead of the November 4 presidential elections, because McCain is not making a big effort to cultivate the community either.
According to a recent opinion poll by Gallup, 62 per cent of Hispanics would vote for Obama, and only 29 per cent would favour McCain.
'Neither of the two is talking about the Hispanic community. They want our vote, but so far they are yet to define what they are going to do for Hispanic voters. The two have defined their position for Jewish voters and the two are going to have to define it for African-American voters,' Cortes said.
'Since we are the largest minority in this country, they have the moral duty to talk about Hispanic people in the United States and about US relations with Latin America,' he added.
Latinos know McCain better, but they also resent his change of mind in relation to immigration reform. Last year he actively supported a bill that would have paved the way to legalization for around 12 million undocumented workers already in the country. After it failed in Congress, McCain changed his idea and started supporting securing the borders first.
Cortes noted that McCain has 'already worked for several years with Hispanic people and he is better known.'
'The problem is that he took a step back on the problem of immigration. He used to talk about migration reform, now he says, 'First close the borders.' We are waiting for him to define that better,' Cortes said.

As the Jerusalem Post reports, 'Barack Obama's half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya.'

Obama takes on the Great Global Blogosphere Conspiracy Against His Holiness

...The Guardian quotes the director of some monitoring outfit as saying that the blogosphere's smears about Obama are particularly vicious.
He added that one of the most persistent is that Obama, a Christian, is 'some kind of Muslim Manchurian candidate, planted by Islamic fundamentalists to betray the country and it is very widespread'.
Well now. Crazed Jew-hating American-loathing moonbats posting comments on Obama's website are one thing. But the fact is that there are serious and troubling questions about Obama's ancestry and associations and what he himself has said about them, which have surfaced in the blogosphere but have been almost wholly ignored by the mainstream media in its collective Obamanic swoon.
First is his childhood background. Last November, his campaign website carried a statement with the headline:
Barack Obama Is Not and Has Never Been a Muslim
followed by
Obama never prayed in a mosque. He has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian.
Obama has also said:
I've always been a Christian
and
I've never practised Islam.
But none of this is true. As is explored in detail on Daniel Pipes's website, Obama was enrolled at his primary schools in Indonesia as a Muslim; he attended the mosque during that period; his friends from that time testify that he was a devout Muslim boy. A former teacher at one of these schools, Tine Hahiyary, remembers a young Obama who was quite religious and actively took part in 'mengaji' classes which teach how to read the Koran in Arabic. The blogger from Indonesia who reported this commented:
'Mengagi' is a word and a term that is accorded the highest value and status in the mindset of fundamentalist societies here in Southeast Asia. To put it quite simply, 'mengaji classes' are not something that a non practicing or so-called moderate Muslim family would ever send their child to... The fact that Obama had attended mengaji classes is well known in Indonesia and has left many there wondering just when Obama is going to come out of the closet.
His father was a Muslim, as was his stepfather. His grandfather was a Muslim convert. His wider family appear to have been largely devout Muslims. Yes, we only know about Obama?s early years as a Muslim; and yes, twenty years ago he became a Christian. The issue, however, is why he has been less than candid about his early background and his family. Indeed, he appears to have actively deceived the public about it. That is why the blogosphere is so exercised about it.

Koran class: In his autobiography, Dreams of My Father, Obama relates how he got into trouble for making faces during Koranic studies, thereby revealing he was a Muslim, for Indonesian students in his day attended religious classes according to their faith. Mosque attendance: Obama's half-sister recalled that the family attended the mosque 'for big communal events.' Watson learned from childhood friends that 'Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque.' Barker found that 'Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers.' One Indonesia friend, Zulfin Adi, states that Obama 'was Muslim. He went to the mosque. I remember him wearing a sarong' (a garment associated with Muslims).
Piety: Obama himself says that while living in Indonesia, a Muslim country, he 'didn't practice [Islam],' implicitly acknowledging a Muslim identity. Indonesians differ in their memories of him. One, Rony Amir, describes Obama as 'previously quite religious in Islam.'
Obama's having been born and raised a Muslim and having left the faith to become a Christian make him neither more nor less qualified to become president of the United States. But if he was born and raised a Muslim and is now hiding that fact, this points to a major deceit, a fundamental misrepresentation about himself that has profound implications about his character and his suitability as president.
