Generational war in Florida over Obama and McCain (Feature)

By Jorge Alvarez Oct 26, 2008, 2:07 GMT

Miami - As if it were a generational war, Florida's Cuban- Americans are divided by age over centre-left Democrat Barack Obama and centre-right Republican John McCain for the White House.

As in earlier elections, particularly the controversial vote in 2000 when the country was left hanging for weeks like so many ballot chads, Florida is likely to play a key role on November 4.

The state grants 27 electoral votes to the winner, a full 10 per cent of the 270 needed nationwide to be president and the fourth largest number of the 50 states after California, Texas and New York.

In the polls, Obama shows a surprising lead here, strengthened by the ongoing financial crisis, the drop in stock prices, the rise in unemployment and the fall in the purchasing power of US citizens.

However, Cuban-Americans - traditionally loyal to the Republican Party and conservative in their political ideals - may again hold the key to the election.

According to the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) at the University of Miami, 68.5 per cent of the Cuban- American electorate identify themselves as Republican, 16.2 per cent as independent and 15.3 as Democrat.

Even so, young people who intend to vote in Florida differ from their elders in their approach to the vital issues: relations with Cuba, the national economy, the war in Iraq, the health system and education.

Cubans who arrived in Florida in the 1960s and 1970s favour McCain as they once favoured President George W Bush. The Arizona senator has signalled he'll keep the hardline policies of strict embargoes, restrictions on travel and remittances to Cuba.

The oldest Cuban-Americans - many of them over 60 - have been busy in recent weeks, carrying banners, making phone calls, sending emails and visiting people who need help going to the polls.

'We cannot lose a single vote,' Luis Mangas told a local television channel.

Mangas, 76, who is now a pensioner, arrived from Cuba in 1965 and worked for an insurance company in Miami-Dade County.

'There is a lot at stake for this city and for the future of Cuba,' he said with evident passion.

'Obama has said he would sit down to talk with the Castro brothers, Hugo Chavez and Iranian (President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad. Doesn't that mean legitimizing dictators?' Mangas asked.

However, young people aged 18-25, the children of Cubans or Cuban- Americans born in the US, have a different vision for their future.

Many think that the US strategy to democratize Cuba is not as vital as the pressing economic problems, including credit to buy homes or cars and access to credit cards, which do affect them directly.

With roots in the world's largest consumer society, the new generation has suffered significant blows to their comfortable lifestyle in recent years, which they attribute to the decisions made by the Bush administration.

'The country is going down an economic tube that can be irreversible,' Alex Bermudez told a local radio station.

'We have to regain confidence and return to the levels of the year 2000, when the country was flourishing,' he said.

Bermudez, a 19-year-old student who is the grandson of a Cuban and a Puerto Rican, defines himself as an independent. He thinks Obama 'brings fresh blood and the change that the United States needs.' As for the war in Iraq, he believes 'it was a mistake.'

'Now we do not know what to do to get out of there. But the truth is it is costing billions of dollars a year to the American taxpayer,' he complained.

Florida's social dynamics have changed over the years, with more younger voters flooding the rolls. According to Census Bureau statistics, the number of Cubans entitled to vote in Miami-Dade grew to almost 795,000 in 2007, about 144,000 more than in 2000.

Only one in eight Cuban-American voters migrated after 1980. Yet the hundreds of thousands of newly arrived who have left behind wives, children, parents, grandparents and other relatives on the communist island favour reduction of restrictive measures on the government in Havana and want to be able to send more remittances back, or even travel to their home country.

Their votes tend to favour Obama, while those who still do not have the right to vote yet staunchly stand up for those they left behind.

'There are many contrasts, and we are certainly going to see a very different election to earlier ones,' said Andy Gomez, a researcher at the University of Miami.

'Florida will hold a very important key,' he stressed.

It isn't too late to vote for a strong USA.Oct 26th, 2008 - 02:23:28

An Obama-Biden administration--working with a Democratic Congress--would mean a more debilitating nanny state at home and a weaker nation facing our enemies abroad... The risk of real damage is great, especially when compared with the prospect of a tough-minded center-right McCain-Palin administration that could lead the country sensibly through these difficult times.

Reading the endorsements of Obama in the liberal media should strengthen the determination of all believers in American self-government and greatness to fight this election campaign to the end. Time magazine's Joe Klein tells us that Obama 'seems a grown-up, in a nation that badly needs some adult supervision.' To the contrary, we are a nation of adults. We don't need the 'supervision' of a conventionally liberal and totally untested junior senator whose most impressive lifetime achievement has been the construction of an effective narrative about himself....

We also hear a lot of squeaking from rats deserting the McCain ship about Barack Obama's exemplary temperament. So what? If he'd had his way, Obama would have lost the war in Iraq--with equanimity. He would have been calm, cool, and collected as U.S. interests were sacrificed and U.S. honor besmirched. Neville Chamberlain also had a fine temperament and a good intellect. Joe Biden, by the way, has neither. But he did--much as he now wishes people to forget it--support the Iraq war. These days, he can barely be bothered even to mention Iraq. Oh well, start a war, lose a war. Gotta move on.

John McCain didn't move on. He helped to win the war. In a fine article on National Review Online last week, Byron York reported on a moment at a McCain rally:

''I just gave John McCain my Purple Heart,' Marine Sgt. Jack Eubanks told me a few minutes after McCain finished a speech at a campaign rally in Woodbridge, Virginia, Saturday. 'I said, 'I want to give this to you, sir, as a reminder that we want you to keep your promise to bring us home in victory and honor, so it will mean something.' ' '

The 22-year-old Eubanks has been injured twice in Iraq. He's now teaching Marine recruits at Quantico--and walking with a cane. York explains that Eubanks saw remarkable progress in Iraq between his 2005 and 2007 tours and is concerned that it might all be for naught. 'I think Obama's just going to pull everyone home as soon as he can, despite what's going on over there,' he told York. 'I just don't want it to turn into another Vietnam or worse where everything we fought for, and all my buddies who died over there, it was just for nothing.'

We would hope that Obama might be more responsible with respect to Iraq as president than he was as senator, now that the surge he opposed and derided has worked. But hope is all anyone can do. And in dealing with other foreign threats, he'd more than likely follow his natural inclination--reflexively liberal, post-nationalist, timid to a fault.

More Hope and Change...

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) of Fannie-gate fame, announced yesterday that he wants a 25% cut in military spending. He also echoed Barack Obama and wants to slash defense projects.
SouthCoast Today reported:

In a meeting with the editorial board of The Standard-Times, Rep. Frank, D-Mass., also called for a 25 percent cut in military spending, saying the Pentagon has to start choosing from its many weapons programs, and that upper-income taxpayers are going to see an increase in what they are asked to pay.

'I was teasing (U.S. Rep.) Jack Murtha (a key supporter of military budgets) and I said to him, 'For the first time, somebody else has got a bill that's almost as big as yours.' We don't need all these fancy new weapons. I think there needs to be additional review.'

Democratic Leaders also have already proposed nationalizing 401K plans.
Workforce and Free Republic reported:

House Democrats Contemplate Abolishing 401(k) Tax Breaks Powerful House Democrats are eyeing proposals to overhaul the nation’s $3 trillion 401(k) system, including the elimination of most of the $80 billion in annual tax breaks that 401(k) investors receive.

...all workers would receive a $600 annual inflation-adjusted subsidy from the U.S. government but would be required to invest 5 percent of their pay into a guaranteed retirement account administered by the Social Security Administration. The money in turn would be invested in special government bonds that would pay 3 percent a year, adjusted for inflation.

(This will not work for Soooooo many reasons. Firstly, congress will just take your money and blow it.)

The current system of providing tax breaks on 401(k) contributions and earnings would be eliminated.

This strategy didn't work so well in Argentina.

Argentina announced it was taking over the pension system to protect workers from losses this week. This caused the Argentina market to crash 16.7 percent.

That, and nothing else is the reason why the GOP doesn't want so called distribution of wealth amongst the population.
For two decades now the corporate tycoons have been stealing your money, until they found it even more profitable to export their plants to countries where they could exploit the workers even more. And all the empty talk about making a stronger USA is meant for you,not for them .How strong is a country in which the manufacturing plants are closing and moving to other countries ?How patriotic are those corporate tycoons that do so?
Sooner or later you'll be left with empty pockets but a brain full of patriotism and nationalism.Meanwhile the bank accounts in the CAyman and Virgin islands will be full ,that is how patriotic the GOP is.
Read well;the top 1 percent of your population holds 38 percent of all the wealth, the bottom 50 percent holds 2,5 percent.Have you ever met a republican that was outraged at these scandalous figures ?

STOP FIGHTING - IT`S ALL OVEROct 26th, 2008 - 18:40:21

It is only 9 days to November 4th. Time is very close, almost too close for arguments, they should have been gone over a thousand times by now - it is all over !

TWO miserable choices ; - McCain or Obama. That is it ! Take it or leave it. Vote or abstain.

McCain
======
Too old at 72. He looks 92. He is slow and lethargic, doddery, looks ill and really is not a suitable specimen for the active, highly responsible and worrying role of President.
His best years are gone long ago. Washed up ?
He has made the most disastrous choice of VP in Palin that it dumbfounds the imagination.
He has been a steady supporter of Bush. We don`t know if this was cosmetic and given his freedom, he will use his own initiative or whether the loyalty is too strong.
WE DO NOT WANT ANOTHER 4 YEARS OF BUSHIDO.
The Republican Party MUST take the blame for the past 8 years, so do we want THEM ? Probably not.
If successful, McCain may not last his term and the replacement prospect is horrendous.

Obama
=====
Relatively young. Totally inexperienced. Almost certainly selected by his party because he is black.
Tends to be erratic and lose all logic. Has no talent for high office and speaks plenty of garbage.
Vibrant, agile and athletic, plenty of energy, looks good and highly impressive. Seems worth a try.
Better the Cheetah than the tortoise.

BOTH candidates are merely the spokesmen for their party advisors, there is very little personal material in anything they say.
This puppet scenario will continue when President - it always has. NO president does his own thing, they have all been mere puppets to their party advisors, backed up by the non-political factions of Government.

SO WHAT HAVE WE GOT TO DO ?
Looking at these basic facts, there is ONLY ONE THING WE CAN DO - VOTE FOR OBAMA !
Given the perilous economic and strategic problems we have today, Obama is our only hope AND I MEAN HOPE !

I hated saying every word of that, but I am realistic and when up against the ropes, must be sensible and do what is best for America and it`s people.
We can only hope that the Senate and Congress will effectively run the country and the President will simply be a figurehead.

',so does 25 percent of the Chinese'

The Chinese are our strategic competitor in the Pacific and would love nothing more then if we were to elect someone who will render this country impotent, both economically and militarily so they can take ur place as the next superpower.

'5 percent of the Germans,etc,etc.'

Obama will be a disaster for this country, if you are voting on the 'hope' that he will do something different then he has throughout his career you are a fool.

'Given the perilous economic and strategic problems we have today, Obama is our only hope AND I MEAN HOPE !'

Obama will make the situation worse. We need to generate jobs and cut spending or it will bankrupt the country and cause a depression. Obama wants to increase spending and tax the job creators to the point where it isn't worth it to create them.

'We can only hope that the Senate and Congress will effectively run the country '

He is going to have the same crowd that has gotten a 9% approval rating, worse actually. Our only hope as a country is to get McCain in and have government gridlock because no matter what they do they screw up.

LA Times Hiding Incriminating Video of Obama with Radical Palestinian? Update: Ayers and Dohrn Attended Khalidi Party with Obama

Politics | Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 8:18:26 pm PDT

Gateway Pundit says he contacted the LA Times to ask about a video showing Barack Obama at a party for former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi, mentioned by the LA Times in this article: Allies of Palestinians see a friend in Barack Obama.

At Khalidi’s going-away party in 2003, the scholar lavished praise on Obama, telling the mostly Palestinian American crowd that the state senator deserved their help in winning a U.S. Senate seat. “You will not have a better senator under any circumstances,” Khalidi said.

The event was videotaped, and a copy of the tape was obtained by The Times.

LA Times writer Peter Wallsten said he won’t release the video or reveal his sources: Confirmed: MSM Holds Video Of Barack Obama Attending Jew-Bash & Toasting a Former PLO Operative... Refuse to Release the Video!

If true, this is media malfeasance of an almost astounding degree. They have a video that could change the stakes in this election and they’re hiding it. And they’ve been hiding it since last April.

Contact the Los Angeles Times and demand that they release this video.

UPDATE at 10/25/08 9:36:04 pm:

It gets even more interesting.

Also attending the farewell dinner described above: Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

In Chicago, the Khalidis founded the Arab American Action Network, and Mona Khalidi served as its president. A big farewell dinner was held in their honor by AAAN with a commemorative book filled with testimonials from their friends and political allies. These included the left wing anti-war group Not In My Name, the Electronic Intifada, and the ex-Weatherman domestic terrorists Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers. (There were also testimonials from then-state Senator Barack Obama and the mayor of Chicago.)

Stunning results in early voting in California.

Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 01:15PM CDT

California has begun early voting already as well as mail-in balloting. The number of people who have gone in to vote in person has been extensive. The results so far prove what we had always suspected. The polls are being proven as totally unreliable. Although the results of early balloting have not been disclosed,of course, how many Republicans and how many Democrats have voted has been revealed.

The results are simply shocking. The polls showed Barack Obama with an 18 point lead in California just a few days ago. The results thus far are the complete opposite. In the most liberal state in the entire country, the results are that 99,000 Republicans have voted and 96,000 Democrats voted. In the mail-in balloting the results so far are that 9,000 Democrats sent in their ballots and that 5,000 Republicans did so. So with nearly 210,000 people having voted, the Democrats have only a 1,000 vote advantage !

If we take the liberty of assuming that all Republicans will vote for John McCain and all Democrats will vote for Obama, then the race is incredibly close. I'm sure that Obama will eventually win in California, but if he is struggling here after he pushed so hard for early voting, then he will lose the election ! Everybody thought he would win California in a landslide, but so far anyway,it's very tight. That means that in the less liberal states he is in real trouble.

Confirmed: MSM Holds Video Of Barack Obama Attending Jew-Bash & Toasting a Former PLO Operative... Refuse to Release the Video!

The LA Times is holding a video that shows Barack Obama celebrating with a group of Palestinians who are openly hostile towards Israel. Barack Obama even gives a toast to a former PLO operative at this celebration. If the American public saw this side of Barack Obama he would never be elected president.
But, the media refuses to release this video.

LA Times writer Peter Wallsten wrote about Barack Obama's close association with former Palestinian operative Rashid Khalidi back in April.
Wallsten discussed a dinner held back in 2003 in honor of Khalidi, a critic of Israel and advocate for Palestinian rights.
Barack Obama has denied his close association with Khalidi, too.

According to Wallsten the evening not surprisingly turned into a classic Jew-bash:

'During the dinner a young Palestinian American recited a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians and sharply criticizing U.S. support of Israel. If Palestinians cannot secure their own land, she said, 'then you will never see a day of peace.'

One speaker likened 'Zionist settlers on the West Bank' to Osama bin Laden, saying both had been 'blinded by ideology.'

Barack Obama also praised the former PLO operative during the event.
And, Obama confessed that his family often shared dinner with the Khalidis:

His many talks with the Khalidis, Obama said, had been 'consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases... It's for that reason that I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation -- a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid's dinner table,' but around 'this entire world.'

...The event was videotaped, and a copy of the tape was obtained by The Times.

Khalidi and the Obamas were great friends in Chicago and often shared meals together. By the way, Khalidi was also best friends with Bill Ayers.

On Wednesday I talked with Peter Wallsten from the Los Angeles Times about the article on Obama and Khalidi:

Wallston was one of the few mainstream media reporters to report on this radical Obama associate.

Wallston said that the article was written after he watched video taken at the Khalidi going away party. When I asked him about the video he said that as far as he was concerned he was through with the story.

I asked him if he was planning on releasing this video of Obama toasting the radical Khalidi at this Jew-bash. He told me he was not releasing the video. He also would not comment on his source for the video. Wallston also said he did not know if Khalidi's good friend Bill Ayers was at the event or not.

So, there you have it.
The LA Times has video of Obama toasting a former PLO operative at a Jew-bash but will not release the video.
This is outrageous.
Obviously, this video would do great damage to Obama who struggles with Jewish voters due to his circle of close anti-Semitic friends.
Maybe this is the reason it is not being released?

More on Khalidi---
Not only does Barack Obama's church of 20 years support Hamas and Hezbollah but Barack Obama also has a longtime close friendship and financial association with suspected former PLO operative and Israel hater Rashid Khalidi.
Earlier this month Sean Hannity dared to report on Barack and Michelle Obama's radical associate and friend, Rashid Khalidi:

Barack Obama funnelled thousands of dollars of cash to Rashidi's anti-Israel Foundation through his work on the Woods Fund.

In 2000, Rashid Khalidi, a former PLO operative who justified Palestinian terrorism as contributing to 'political enlightenment,' threw a fundraiser for his friend Barack Obama.

Although he is described as a former PLO operative, via Free Republic, this is what Rashid Khalidi has to say about Palestinian terrorism against Jews-- he said anti-Israel violence contributed to 'political enlightenment':

On Palestinian violence. Khalidi glorifies anti-Israel violence as contributing to “political enlightenment”[vii] and unsurprisingly admires those who carry it out. His loyalty to Palestinian terrorist groups run so deep that he actually dedicated his 1986 valentine to the PLO, Under Siege, to “those who gave their lives . . . in defense of the cause of Palestine and independence of Lebanon.”[viii] The book whitewashes PLO violence against Israelis and Lebanese, as well as the Syrian occupation.

Khalidi and Ayers were practically best friends.
And, both Ayers and Obama signed the commemorative book given to Khalidi at his going away party:

In Chicago, the Khalidis founded the Arab American Action Network, and Mona Khalidi served as its president. A big farewell dinner was held in their honor by AAAN with a commemorative book filled with testimonials from their friends and political allies. These included the left wing anti-war group Not In My Name, the Electronic Intifada, and the ex-Weatherman domestic terrorists Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers. (There were also testimonials from then-state Senator Barack Obama and the mayor of Chicago.)

It's hard to imagine that the LA Times would hold onto a video of Sarah Palin praising an anti-Semitic radical and former PLO operative...
But, that is today's mainstream media.

McCain is impulsive and erratic and doesn't emit the confidence people are looking for in a president. Obama demonstrates careful deliberation and a caring persona, not consumed by hatred for his opponents. McCain's attack strategy and his and Palin's constant spewing of this at rallies has been one of the downfalls of his campaign helping to sink his hopes.
Now Palin has been demonstrating some differences from some of McCain's policies that would hint of a not-so-good pairing and working well together. I think Palin has her sights set on the future, and a big problem with her is she doesn't know what she doesn't know!

MSM Witholds Video of Obama Toasting Former PLO Operative at Jew Bashing Dinner

Barack Obama funnelled thousands of dollars of cash to Rashidi’s anti-Israel Foundation through his work on the Woods Fund. In 2000, Rashid Khalidi, a former PLO operative who justified Palestinian terrorism as contributing to “political enlightenment,” threw a fundraiser for his friend Barack Obama.

Now that you have the background of this radical, here are some summary points of Gateway Pundit’s report on the media willfully withholding video evidence of Obama praising him while attending a Jew bash:

LA Times writer Peter Wallsten wrote about Barack Obama’s close association with former Palestinian operative Rashid Khalidi back in April.

“During the dinner a young Palestinian American recited a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians and sharply criticizing U.S. support of Israel. If Palestinians cannot secure their own land, she said, “then you will never see a day of peace.”

One speaker likened “Zionist settlers on the West Bank” to Osama bin Laden.”

….His many talks with the Khalidis, Obama said, had been “consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases… It’s for that reason that I’m hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation — a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid’s dinner table,” but around “this entire world.”

…The event was videotaped, and a copy of the tape was obtained by The Times.

Jim Hoft (Gateway Pundit) talked to Peter Wallsten from the Los Angeles Times about the article on Obama and Khalidi on Wednesday.

I asked him if he was planning on releasing this video of Obama toasting the radical Khalidi at this Jew-bash. He told me he was not releasing the video. He also would not comment on his source for the video. Wallston also said he did not know if Khalidi’s good friend Bill Ayers was at the event or not.

So, the LA Times has video of Obama attending a Jew bash and toasting a radical former PLO operative, and they are not sharing it with the public. I think we all know they would immediately release the tape if it were Sarah Palin making the toast.

Update: William Ayers was at the Jew bash too!

Took you long enough.
Fags are smokes. Fag was originally short for faggot, meaning a bundle of sticks, generally for starting a fire. A faggot is also a kind of meatball, a traditional dish in the UK, especially the Midlands of England. It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork. A faggot is traditionally made from pig heart, liver and fatty belly meat or bacon minced together, with herbs added for flavouring and sometimes breadcrumbs. The mixture is shaped in the hand into balls, wrapped round with caul (a membrane from the pig's abdomen), and baked.
Seeing as how you were using British vernacular, your bum chums in Frisco don't enter into this. It doesn't matter, you still made an ash of yourself, meatball.
