Obamacans and McCain Democrats: Some voters switching sides

Washington - Five months ago, at the start of the US general election, much of the talk was of disaffected Hillary Clinton voters leaving the Democratic Party and throwing their weight behind Republican John McCain.
Female voters who backed Clinton's historic candidacy were enticed by McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as a running mate. The McCain campaign also hoped working class voters who plumped for Clinton could be convinced to switch sides in a repeat of the 1980s elections that swung on so-called 'Reagan Democrats.'
Yet the buzz has more recently shifted in the other direction. With only two days to go to the general election, Democrat Barack Obama is leading opinion polls in part because of inroads made in traditionally Republican regions of the country.
The 'Obamacans' bandwagon has also collected some prominent conservative endorsements.
Highest among them has been Colin Powell, the former secretary of state under President George W Bush and once considered a possible presidential candidate. Powell, who left the Bush administration over some foreign policy differences, endorsed Obama as a 'transformational figure,' in mid October after months of speculation.
On Friday, Ken Duberstein, a chief of staff under former president Ronald Reagan, told broadcaster CNN that he too would be voting for Obama. He cited Powell's endorsement as a factor in his decision.
Other defections include Scott McClellan, Bush's former press secretary, and Christopher Buckley, the son of the late noted US conservative icon William Buckley.
Buckley endorsed Obama last week and claimed he was promptly told to give up his back-page weekly column in the National Review, a weekly magazine started by his father.
Another surprising backer is Ken Adelman, a strong supporter of the US-led invasion of Iraq who has served in a number of Republican administrations. His complaint with McCain fell in part on his pick of Palin, Alaska's governor since 2006, who Adelman considered too inexperienced for the job.
McCain has also attracted some prominent defections. Early on in the campaign, Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a one-time Clinton fundraiser, left the Democratic National Committee to join the Republican campaign.
Parting ways with the Democratic camp more recently was Wendy Button, a former speech writer for Obama, Clinton and 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards. She complained of sexism in the campaign and the media's treatment of Palin in particular.
But perhaps most noteworthy has been Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, who was Democrat Al Gore's running mate in 2000. Lieberman, an independent since 2004, has been a regular on the campaign trail with McCain and spoke at the Republican nominating convention in September.
The departures arguably play to the candidates' strengths as post- partisan politicians. McCain has long had a reputation as a 'maverick' senator unafraid of taking on his own party and working with Democrats on a number of key issues, including campaign finance reform, immigration and climate change.
Obama, for his part, often speaks to American voters' desire for both sides to come together. The most famous line of his 2004 Democratic convention speech that catapulted him into the political limelight was: 'There is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America.'
Among all voters, polls suggest there is a small group moving in either direction. According to a Gallup Poll, 10 per cent of Republicans will vote for Obama, and 9 per cent of Democrats will vote for McCain.

If you're on a winning campaign, you don't sully your good name with the guilt by association charges and other rubbish that we see coming from the GOP. So I guess we know who is dangerously far ahead at the moment. Otherwise we might hear things like, 'John McCain admires a convicted domestic terrorist, Mr. G. Gordon Liddy. He spent five years being indoctrinated by Asian communists and came back to be a mole in US politics. He has been a notorious philanderer and adulterer. He has been endorsed by anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic preachers on the extreme right. He is hiding his current, dangerous medical condition from the public “ And, of course, if he were ahead in the polls he would ignore such charges and say how much he admires the opposing candidate. Unfortunately for John he isn’t ahead and he has sullied his good name and reputation. Even if were to pull out a miracle and win now, what kind of a reputation would he and his people carry into the Whitehouse?
We can only hope that Sarah will continue the destruction she's brought on the Republican party. Instead of just guaranteeing 8 years of an Obama Presidency, she can hand the Democrats 16 years of a super majority.

It is very painful and at the same time fascinating to see the transformation this country has gone through in the last 2 years primarily for the reason that of this election and its candidates. Before Obama became eminent due to his speeches, it was almost impractical for me to sense that this country was going to have a black president but now I see it coming.
I have a high regard for Mr. John McCain in so many ways that if he weren't running against not only somebody I believe and America believes can change this country but the world; I was going to vote for him.
John McCain’s prospect to take a ride on the finest street in America, of course one to the white house has been blocked almost utterly in my view due to his presidential pick. I feel bad but at the same time he's the one who caused it. He knew Sarah Palin wasn't qualified for the job and he still picked her. You know what this has done? Of course, as far as PUMA Pundit's concerned, this fact will fall into the category of, 'My mind is made up; don't confuse me with the facts.' That's why I'm telling you that PUMA Punditis just one more broken spoke in a square wheel.
I just want to say that PUMA Pundit recently got caught red-handed trying to resort to underhanded tactics of spamming any and all message boards and comment sections throughout the internet world... Well, surprise, surprise, surprise, as Gomer Pyle would say. It's really amazing, isn't it? We can put people on the Moon and send robot explorers to Mars, but PUMA Pundit's goal is to replace our natural soul with an artificial one. How pestilential is that? How snippy? How pea-brained?
The baneful nature of PUMA Pundit's stratagems is not just a rumor. It is a fact to which I can testify. Be always mindful that when I hear PUMA Pundit say that divine ichor flows through its veins, I have to wonder about it. Is it completely poxy? Is it simply being venom-spouting? Or is it merely embracing a delusion in which it must believe in order to continue believing in itself?
I don't pretend to know the answer but I do know that PUMA Pundit has so frequently BS'd about how mediocrity and normalcy are ideal virtues that some weaker-minded people are starting to believe it. We need to explain to such people that PUMA Pundit has long wanted to prevent anyone from stating publicly that all of its diatribes are burdened by a specious magniloquence. Why do I bring that up? Because by studying its repression of ideas in its extreme, unambiguous form one may more clearly understand why PUMA Pundit is trying to BS us. It wants us to believe that it's reckless to condemn -- without hesitation, without remorse -- all those who ensure that there can never in the future be accord, unity, or a common, agreed-upon destiny among the citizens of this once-great nation; that's boring; that's not cool. You know what I think of that, don't you? I think that PUMA Pundit is firmly convinced that it has the linguistic prowess to produce a masterwork of meritorious literature. Its belief is controverted, however, by the weight of the evidence indicating that PUMA Pundit and its secret agents are spiteful shrewish-types. This is not set down in complaint against them, but merely as analysis.
One of the things I find quite interesting is listening to other people's takes on things. For instance, I recently overheard some folks remark that the magnitude of PUMA Pundit's BS should disgust anyone who has an even moderate education. At the risk of sounding a tad redundant, let me add that PUMA Pundit possesses no significant intellectual skills whatsoever and has no interest in erudition. Heck, it can't even spell or define 'erudition', much less achieve it. I recently heard PUMA Pundit tell a bunch of people that it should be a given a direct pipeline to the National Truth Serum repository. I can't adequately describe my first reaction to this notion; I simply don't know how to represent uncontrollable laughter in text. PUMA Pundit id the type that would insist that 'the truth', 'the whole truth', and 'nothing but the truth' are three different things, I believe that anyone with eyes and a brain can tell that it likes thinking thoughts that aren't burdensome and that feel good. That's why I truly allege that basic principles, painfully and gradually drawn from the wisdom, the suffering, the aspirations, and the prophetic religious teachings of countless centuries before us are far more trustworthy than PUMA Pundit's babbling ploys. I don't think anyone questions that. But did you know that its wretched cock-and-bull stories have led to more, not less, division and hatred in our society?
PUMA Pundit's comment leaves the impression of an army of pompous phrases moving over the landscape in search of an idea.

How about the fact that every republican presidential Candidate has spoken at Bob Jones university and asked for his indorsement. Lets look at the facts, McCain believes in trickle down economics. Reagans run of trickle down led to his presidency ending in a recession. Now look at what Bush did when he finally went away from them by raising taxes on the rich. He turned over an economy moving up to Clinton. What Obama wants to do is roll back taxes on the Rich to the Reagan era and then combine that with the Clinton era policies which bypassed the trickle down by giving tax breaks to small businesses and middle class. I think history speaks for itself when we see how the Clinton era ended. Bush took us back to trickle down and the economy tanked.
It's simple math. Reagan trickle down=Bush trickle down=McCain trickle down=Recession. Clinton=Obama=economic growth.

McCain has renounced earmarks, promised to veto them and promised to cut spending. Obama is going to create gigantic entitlement programs that will push our debt level over our gdp. You seem to think that isn't a big deal but it will mean the end of the dollar as the worlds reserve currency. That is a very big problem. It will also mean that oil and other commodities that are traded in dollars will skyrocket in price compared to other currencies. Another big problem. If these commodities are traded in other currencies then that will force the dollar down further. inflation will skyrocket. We will done for, broke and unable to trade. That is really what we are headed for. We can not afford what Obama wants to give away.
Bottom line, McCain has promised to balance the budget. Obama is going to blow the lid off it.

Actually I've been sitting on the fence but what changed my mind was when I watched the charity dinner (forgot what it's for) when both candidates have to give a funny speech. I thought McCain was nervous and looked like a junior senator (that he really is), whereas Obama was composed, in control, and very much at ease.
While that's hardly a valid reason to choose a President, I really don't know how to differentiate between the 2 candidates anymore. What they say during the campaign is really meaningless, since they are not going to be held accountable for any of it (ala 'Read my lips...'). Also, everything they say is scripted by their writers anyway and may not be what they actually think. Seems like the only way to judge this is by their historical actions, or one's gut feeling. My gut feeling goes to Obama right now

I could never vote for someone who is so erratic and confused and would be considered elderly at the beginning of his term. We need someone who is strong, mentally and physically, who is up to the rigors of the Presidency, and not be worried that we might be burdened with a VP who was insufficient to say the least. We have had and still do have a number of these people in our administration, in very high positions of office.
NOW ! Why would we do that if we did`nt like them ? Not ALL nigga`s end up in prisons - most do of course, but not all. Some even swing around the White House balconies and dangle from the chandeliers. Come in handy at times for dusting the ceilings.

Palin might have gotten a lot of flak from the media, but it was her own doing for god's sake. No one can come out there and be so uninformed about so many things and act so confused as she did and not expect some criticism. If she had lived up to all the hype about her, the media wouldn't have had anything to jump on.
