White House rejects purported bin Laden truce offer

Jan 19, 2006, 18:45 GMT

Washington - The White House on Thursday rejected a purported truce offer by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, saying the United States does not negotiate with terrorists.

Spokesman Scott McClellan said U.S. President George W. Bush was informed of the audio tape with remarks attributed to bin Laden, which aired on the Arab television channel al-Jazeera.

On the tape, a voice offers a 'truce' to the US if it withdraws from Iraq and Afghanistan.

'We do not negotiate with terrorists,' McClellan said. 'We put them out of business.'

He added that the US, together with its allies, has taken the fight to terrorists all over the world and has bin Laden 'on the run.' But he also said the war on terror is 'broader than any one person.'

McClellan said US intelligence experts are analyzing the tape to determine its authenticity.

He gave no indication of whether the US government would raise its terrorist threat level.
