Gunfire report triggers alert near US Capitol
May 26, 2006, 15:27 GMT
Washington - Police ordered some US members of Congress to stay in their offices Friday after suspected gunfire was heard in their office building near the Capitol, news reports said.
Police were investigating what reports of gunshots in the Rayburn House Office Building's garage, Cable News Network (CNN) reported.
But Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the capital Washington in the House of Representatives, told a local television station that it was 'just another one of those false alarms' until she heard otherwise.
Earlier reports quoted Capitol police as saying that shots had actually been fired.
The US Senate, which occupies the other half of the Capitol building in Washington, remained in session during the alert.
