Yemen wants further probe into death of Guantanamo inmate
Jun 15, 2006, 17:56 GMT
Sanaa - Yemeni authorities on Thursday asked their US counterparts to further investigate the death of a Yemeni detainee at the Guantanamo prison camp, saying his death reflected the prison's inhuman conditions, Yemen's official news agency Saba reported.
Ali Abdullah Ahmad al-Salmi and two Saudi prisoners were found dead in their cells last Saturday. The US military said the three men hanged themselves with sheets and clothes.
Saba said al-Salmi's body arrived back in Yemen on Thursday. An unnamed Yemeni official quoted by the agency said the Yemeni government was very worried over the fate of other Yemenis in the prison.
He called upon the US military to offer better human care to all detainees and to guarantee their safety according to international laws and human rights conventions.
The Yemeni official further urged the US authorities to hand over detainees to their native countries to face fair trials.
Yemeni rights groups and al-Salmi's family have rejected claims that he killed himself, and have urged the Yemeni authorities to carry out an autopsy on his body.
The deaths were the first at Guantanamo since the US military began sending hundreds of suspected al-Qaeda or Taliban fighters to the detention facility in Cuba after the US-led war on Afghanistan in 2002.
