US Congress rejects setting deadline for troop withdrawal from Iraq
Jun 16, 2006, 18:39 GMT
Washington - The US House of Representatives Friday rejected setting a timetable for US troops to be withdrawn from Iraq, instead passing a resolution saying the country is 'committed to the completion of the mission.'
The non-binding resolution was introduced as a tactic by the House's majority Republicans to back President George W Bush's policy after a string of recent successes in Iraq, and to put opposition Democrats on the defensive.
The troop withdrawal issue was the centrepiece of the resolution, declaring that 'it is not in the national security interest of the United States to set an arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment of United States Armed Forces from Iraq.'
Some high profile Democrats have been calling for Bush to set a timeline for the withdrawal of US troops, including former presidential candidate and Massachusetts Senator John Kerry.
But Republicans also included other language to make Democrats voting against it seem unpatriotic.
The resolution also honours the sacrifices of the US military and the multinational coalition that invaded Iraq, as well as Americans at home that participate in the war on terror.
The resolution passed by a vote of 256 to 153, with 42 Democrats crossing party lines to support the measure. Three Republicans opposed the measure.

Actually, most Americans would kick Marcellus Dominic's ass if we came across a punk like him.
Dad of a US Marine
Is that how military people respond to open discussion, by acting tough? Military families who don't see what is being done to them are blind. Those who know and don't do anything about it are not patriotic Americans. Time to face the evil that is emanating from our leaders. Support the troops, impeach Bush Cheney

Skunk talk and it sure not only foul smelling, but because we American Patriots now have our eys open, can actually see the stink, like the cloud of dirty dust that follows around PIG PEN in the Charley Brown comics.
All supporters of this 'passing of certain gas...Bill) now all supporting passing the gas' stink even more and are clearly visable and their 'true' attempting to 'distract' from spilled blood of our Patroits sons & daughters whom had to serve under false mission orders. The stink will start to clear up in next mid-term elections for we true Amaerican Patroits do not like to be lied to over and over, We the People have 'Clearity of Intent.' The stink may get cleaned out, but nothing can remove the spilled blood...
