Former soldier charged with murder of Iraqi family, rape of girl

Jul 3, 2006, 22:19 GMT

Washington - US federal authorities have charged a former US soldier with murdering four members of an Iraq family and raping one of the victims.

Steven Green, 21, appeared in a court in Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday on the charges that include the rape of a 15- year-old girl before taking her life and killing her family, Bloomberg news reported.

Federal prosecutors allege Green went to the family's house with three other soldiers on March 12 to rape the girl.

Green has since been discharged for the US military the crime became known for 'personality disorders.' Green could face the death penalty for murder and life in prison for rape, Bloomberg said.

The alleged killings took place in the family's home in Mahmudiyah, which lies south of Baghdad. The US military announced an investigation on Friday.

The murder of hte family is the latest probe into allegations of US soldiers killing civilians.

The Pentagon is conducting an investigation into members of the US Marine Corps in connection to the slaughter of 24 Iraqi civilians, including women in children, in November in Haditha.

The US military last week charged seven US Marines and a Navy corpsman with the murder of a 54-year-old Iraqi man in the town of Hamdaniya.

The eight soldiers also face charges of kidnapping, conspiracy, larceny and false statement, said Colonel Stewart Navarre at Camp Pendleton, California.

Another four US soldiers have been charged with the murder of three Iraqi detainees who were shot during an operation in southern Salah ad Din Province on May 9.

He is a monster. If he was home he would have attacked a family here, maybe one of our sisters. Let him be stoned by those who grieve for the dead. He deserves the harshest of punishments and the family deserves our prayers and sympathy.

Note reference to discharge for psychological problems. He should never have been in the Army. This looks like sad downstream of our military not making their recruitment quotas, then lowering standards again and again to get warm bodies.

What can you expect of people when you lie to the people and the military, misuse the military for the sake of corporate greed and keep extending their service. How long are we the people going to take this from the neo con men.

This is not politics, this is a criminal. There is no one to blame but the person who commited the crime. Do you provide the same excuses to criminals in your home country? I think not! Get off your political band wagon! I am sick and tired of people taking every single issue and turning it into an argument leaning towards your point of view. You sound like fools! This person did not commit this crime as a statement! How dare you justify and excuse him! No wonder the USA has a bad wrap! Grow up.

real reality checkJul 4th, 2006 - 00:57:20

of course there are political overtones! we're at war! we have necessarily placed individuals (soldiers) into tremendous position of power (outside of the training boot camps) where they come into direct contact with not only the enemy (as undefined in the scope of this response) but also with civilians. the percentages are guaranteed that NOT everyone will manage that power at the end of a rifle responsibly -- and war-time realities removes practical checks-and-balances due to flawed propagations of the combined rules-of-conduct and heightened expectations that all governed by such rules will rise to the occassion. most do, some do not, and there is also an unjudged, out-of-site, out-of-mind gray zone for some, save perhaps the nightmares of war which will haunt a soldier of questionable decisions made in the field.

the bottom line is the acceptance of the reality that some bad apples will be in the trucks is a given that was made at the political level when the concept of going to war was instead idealized! it is political!

if the soldier is guilty as charged... there should be tremendous consequences to pay -- as perhaps the only deterrent for the above 'flawed propagations'. where lies the politcal deterrent?

You should research what you say before you say it, you sound like idiots who know nothing of the facts. WMD's have been in Iraq for years, they have been found, Sadam not only bragged about them but used them. And if Iran is next you better be grateful. You dont want an unstable person bombing your parents home, I certainly dont want my family threatened by a madman. Most of the comments I have read are nothing more then a political plug, a pitiful attempt to bring to light your pathetic discord over a situation you know little about. This criminal is not a politician and if you are on his side you should face the same sentence as him.
