US Secretary of Defence on first visit to NATO
Jan 12, 2007, 16:08 GMT
Brussels - US Defence Secretary Robert Gates will visit NATO headquarters on January 15 for talks with alliance chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO officials said Friday.
This will be the first visit to NATO by the new US defence chief who took over three weeks ago from Donald Rumsfeld, a veteran of NATO meetings.
Gates' talks with Scheffer are expected to focus on rising violence in Afghanistan, NATO's biggest foreign military operation.
But diplomats say discussions will also centre on US President George W Bush's plan to send more US troops to Iraq where NATO is involved in an army training operation.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in Brussels on January 26 for a crisis meeting of NATO foreign ministers expected to focus on Afghanistan and Kosovo.
NATO defence ministers are scheduled to meet in Sevilla, Spain, on February 8-9.
