Two killed in small plane crash outside Los Angeles (Roundup)
Jan 12, 2007, 21:20 GMT
Washington/San Francisco - A twin-engine jet crashed in southern California Friday shortly after takeoff, killing two people on board, officials said.
The Cessna Citation crashed on takeoff from Van Nuys Airport in the San Fernando Valley about 11 am local time, less than a kilometre from the airfield, an airport official said in a telephone interview.
A firefighter from the Los Angeles Fire Department, in broadcast remarks from the scene, said the cleanup work was complicated by the large amount of fuel spread at the crash site.
Federal Aviation Agency officials told a local television station that the pilot had reported to the control tower that they had an emergency on board and were returning back to the airport, the airport official said.
The Cessna Citation 525 was registered to Moon Child Aviation, based at Suncrest Aviation, the airport official said.
