Too bad George Bush did`nt come from a family of doctors or teachers, as one trillion dollars spent on healthcare and education would have huge lasting effects , hence a country of healthy and higly educated people, yet Bush would rather spend vast sums in a defense budget that will eventually only defend the sick and uneducated people of a once powerfull nation.
War mongrel replublicans never seem to see the outside the `WAR MACHINE` box.
Education and healthcare are the future of the people , by the people , for the people.
In god we trust , as that is all that is left for the people of a once proud nation.

As I read this article, the thought occurred to me:
Can 3 trillion dollars really be considered 'setting a budget'?
Isn't that like saying, I'm going to spend every penny in the world and that's my budget.
Can it be called a budget when there's really no ceiling?
So, with Bush's new budget as inspiration, I am hereby setting my FY 2007 personal beer drinking and music buying budget at 6.8 gazillion. I hope that this figure meets with my wife and family's bipartisan approval.

What really frightens me the most these days is not Bush. 2/3 of America knows he's a disaster. That's old news. It's the 1/3 that still supports him that is truly frightening. How could anyone who has any knowledge of current events support him?

Schools are worse at money management than the Dept of Defense. Many districts are in the hole from spending on worthless initiatives, among other reasons. Giving them more money is not the solution, it's rewarding them for doing a poor job. To be fair, suit-happy individuals have hampered real change - you can't fire incompetent teachers, and you can't discipline children who refuse to learn. If you can't fix the real problem, maybe that witch-doctor psychologist giving the 'Fix our Schools Seminar' might have a solution!

Based on their past track record, what's to prevent schools from wasting more money?

And then there's healthcare. Paying for everyone's healthcare means eventually that paycheck to insurance companies will hit a ceiling. Faced with fixed income, insurance companies have to lower costs. This comes in the form of longer waiting times and unsupported procedures. Ask Canada. Ask the US Military.

I share your angst against President Bush. That said, there's no easy answer by just throwing more money at our domestic problems.

I wish we'd impeach judges who grant unentitled money, but there's a whole other slippery slope.

Peace? You think our stopping the war will result in peace? The only way to obtain peace is through victory.

Withdrawal will result in a larger war, one that will be fought on our shores, and tens to hundreds of millions of civilian casualties.

Dubya is a foolFeb 5th, 2007 - 18:45:05

If anyone thinks that the dems would have somehow bowed to terrorists demands, or not attacked Al Quaeda in response to 9/11, they're (a) making wild assumptions because the dems were not in power post 9/11, until presently, and (b) making the inaccurate assumption Bush has somehow improved our security by attacking Iraq.

By Dubya's own admission, mistakes were made. Further, the neoconservatives used 9/11 to forward a hidden agenda by using faulty intellegence to connect Iraq to Al Quaeda.

No doubt the following is clear (1) Iraq had no WMD (i.e. no immediate threat posed to US security interests), and (2) Saddam Hussein had no documented or proven connection to 9/11 or open support for any terrorist networks (this isn't that crazy when you consider he was a dictator and power monger.)

Now Iraq is a hotbed for secretarian violence and terrorist networks. We're involved in a quagmire with no forseeable end or exit strategy.

Dubya came into office with a budget surplus, great economy, great strides towards healthcare reform, stem cell research, environmental reform, smaller beauracracy, and great increases in domestic education spending.

Now we have a huge deficit, slowing economy with huge consumer debt, no healthcare reform with reduced healthcare spending, legal obstructions to stem cell research, environmental reforms (withdrawing from Kyoto Accord, decreased energy regulation, and greater reliance upon foreign energy), the largest increase in the federal beauracracy in US history (addition of Dept. of Homeland Security), and a failed education policy (HeadStart) coupled with reduced education spending.

Mistakes were definately made, I'm just not sure they're limited to the war in Iraq.

MONIES WELL SPENT! DON'T FORGET 9-11!
Old Nick is right. Have Americans forgotten 9-11? What is wrong with you people who do not see the clear threat Islamic terrorism poses to the U.S.A. and the rest of the civilized world (people of European descent)? If the U.S. does not seek out and destroy all of the fanatical Muslims who hate the West and Israel, Al-Qaeda will take over the world! What good is U.S. money spent on health care, education and improving the condition of the poor when radical Islamists are ready to behead all Americans! Will it take another 9-11 before America comprehends the real threat? Look at our borders, don't you un-patriotic people realize that the Union of Islamic Courts, who were chased out of Somalia, are waiting in Mexico to be smuggled into the U.S. to attack us because of our love of freedom and democracy? What about our northern border? Evil Muslims from Chechnya are in Canada preparing to attack Buffalo, Detroit, Duluth, Spokane and Seattle at this very moment! Do you cowards know that Muslims from Trinidad and Guyana are swimming to the Florida Keys to kill all of the homosexuals! When is America going to wake-up and understand that 9-11 was just the first salvo fired in The Clash of Civilizations? President George W. Bush is a strong and resolute man of courage, a great American hero who carried a fearful nation on his broad shoulders in the days and weeks after 9-11? What is a few billion dollars for this great religious crusade, I mean war, when another 9-11 is being planned? All Americans and freedom loving people are going to have to be ready to make sacrifices. It won't be easy. We'll need to start building internment camps for all of the Muslims in the U.S. and conscript our young men and women into military service to confront this Islamic enemy. After we nuke Iran our troops will have to take control of the oil fields in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. This will be a long hard battle, but the memory of 9-11 will serve as motivation as our armies go to each Muslim country and force the women to strip off those baggy clothes and pose nude for PLAYBOY and make GIRLS GONE WILD videos. The Muslim world needs freedom and democracy! We must wipe-out the Taliban in Afghanistan so we can completely control the opium trade. No opposition to our imperialist foreign policy objectives will be allowed. No threat to Israel will be tolerated, all of the Palestinians and supporters of Hezbullah will be shipped to concentration camps in Germany to be euthanized. These are just the initial steps that must be taken, we must be vigilant or another 9-11 will happen.

Impeaching the 'son-of-a-gun' REALLY sounds like the best plan to me. Perhaps if our representatives stopped posturing in ways that portray us as a nation of bullies we would'nt need such a large defense budget. It is improbable to find sustainable solutions to any conflict without some dialog between adversaries. Rhetorical threats fan the flames of mistrust and imbolden adversaries. The only way to break the cycle is to create a route out of the cycle, not perpetuate its motion! Bush's lack of planning in our militay's invasion of Iraq has put our soldiers in the role of a fouth tribe in an existing three-way tribal dispute. You're doing a 'heckuva job' stabilizing the Middle East Mr. President.

Rather than sending in more of our warriors, a better strategy to solving the problems of the Iraqi people may be to pull out our troops, drop the proposed $170 billion from planes on the populace of Iraq and say, 'sorry we blew up your country'. We could call them afterwards and tell them that if they wished, we would refrain from sending them images of American pastimes such as Brittany Spears exposed crotch and people glutting themselves to the point of physical sickness on Krystal hamburgers (Super Bowl coverage stuff).

If we really believe in the integrity of the Iraqi people, then we should believe that they are capable of making effective alliances to repair the damage we incurred after the big red, white, and blue elephant is gone.

This has been the goal of the neocons all along. They want to 'starve the beast' - the 'beast' in their minds, social programs and 'entitlements. If you have no money left after paying for wars and 'terrorism defense', which they believe is more omporatant than anything, you will be forced to close those programs down. If everything government is privatized, as they wish, then some business somewhere will be making a commission and a profit on every 'social' transaction that takes place, putting money in the pockets of corporations qnd away from ordinary citizens.
They use scare tactics over purported threats scare tactics over these programs taking most of the budget (untrue), and the like to try and get the support of the people. Sincew few look into anything themselves, they eventually succeed in making government irrelevany and having most of our collected taxes go to defense and contractors. Sort of like what is happening in Iraq that they are trying to cover up.
Watch out for the deceptions of this gang.

9-11 WAS an inside job. bush and co either set it up themselves to give the country an excuse to invade the middle east to secure the oil.

its all about needing to create a new enemy too justify the massive military spending which halliburton and co are profiting from. bin laden died 3 years ago but bush needs a bogeyman to continue his hunt around afghanistan whilst securing oil pipelines.

but beware, the real fun is yet to begin. bush and his chums are nearing the end of their term so they will try to seize control of the government via a false 'terror' plot which they will blame on iran and use as an excuse to invade that country. this then allows them to justify stealing that country's oil and declaring martial law in the states.

my guess is a 'dirty' bomb denotated by the FBI in montana around july. then its goodbye american democracy and helo dictator bush. its nothing new- hitler pulled the same stunt with the reichstag fire in the 30's.

Why Bush keeps denying there is a civil war in Iraq is incomprehensible!!
In a way, Iraq is much worse off than under Saddam. Why see our military killed in this senseless war and our money being wasted when it won't do any good. All the middle east countries hate the U.S., and it's getting worse.
We need to get out where we don't belong and let Iraq manage their own affairs however they see fit. Our country needs to concentrate on the so-called terriorists that are here already and spend the money on good security. The attacks on 911 didn't happen overnight, they were planned for years. That shouldn't have happened if our country had a better plan for security, and getting in the middle of a civil war isn't the way to do it!!! Bush acts like an angry little kid who is determined that NO ONE is going to tell him what to do, and he won't admit he is wrong about ANYTHING!!! Maybe it's time that the Presidency should not hold as much power as it does, because under this administration it is scary!!!

The way I see it is that part of the blame for the war is to be imposed on religious extremists .Mind you ,not only those in the Middle East solely ?Enough has been said about them already .THe have been targetted by the press and the administration .THey have their mirrorlike images in the US too, they are called Jerry Falwell,Pat Robertson and George Bush amongst others, waging a new crusade in the name of God (the only only real one of course ).Isn't it a well known fact that evangelicals, creationists and all brainwashing propagandists of the eternal truth claim the they possess the world of god from his own mouth ? ,that God is waving the amican flag over the battlefield, that the war is between the US and the evildoers ?
If so I suggest the outcome should be evident and there would be no need to divert money from social security to the war .May I suggest all the biggots to pray their deity deity for a quick victory and let the dollars flow where they are really needed, into education for the children ,health care for the elderly ,unemployment for the jobless .
Bu it seems they don't trust their own prayers, how strange .
Again my advise to them would be pray and stay out of the real world .Get back to your closets.

Pull out of Iraq, great idea, then what?

Our military is the only reason that region isn't a complete bloodbath.

Anyone remember Pol-Pot? Here's a refresher: he killed 3 million of his people during the 70s and 80s in Cambodia after we pulled out of Vietnam.

Right now we're the only reason there are thousands instead of hundreds of thousands dieing a month over there.

Want $10/gal gas? Want to double your electricity bill? Remember how the cost of regular goods went up when gas was over $3? If you do then yeah, let's pull out of Iraq. Or you can get off your idealistic high-horse and face reality, we've opened Pandora's box and simply leaving will not close it.

Yeah, there is more bloodshed since we've been there, but that's because Saddam kept that from happening by ruling with an iron fist. Now that the police state is gone over there the people who'd been itching to kill each other don't have anyone but the US to stop it.

Every person killed by a soldier probably saves fifty or more of whatever sect the person killed did not belong to.

As far as the miracles with the money, what miracles has the government done? Name one.

For your information, Cambodia was a peaceful country, neutral in the Vietnam War. Prince Sihanouk adopted an official policy of neutrality until ousted in 1970 by a military coup led by Prime Minister General Lon Nol (big friend of Nixon), and after the invasion of Cambodia by the US army. Pol Pot appeared after that. No American intervention, no Pol Pot.
Iraq did have a brutal dictatorship, but nothing compared with what is going on now. Before the sanctions, after the 1st Gulf War, Iraq was a prosperous country, compared with it's neighbors. The people, under a brutal dictator, lived a normal life. Now, after your so dear intervention, because of non existent WMD, or because of 'democracy' and 'freedom', the population of that country is suffering like never before. And you'll leave, because you will do it, sooner or latter, and you'll leave behind thousands of deaths, a destroyed country, and have achieved nothing, but put trillions of dollars in the pockets of a few guys, who control your so called democratic institutions. CBO Estimates $1 TRILLION of future costs!!!Aug 1st, 2007 - 17:32:22

www.govexec.com/story_page.cfm?articleid=37618&dcn=todaysnews

(Note the last included paragraph, indicating Bush's failure to budget in the correct fiscal year - that's been the case since 2003, and why we keep having 'supplementals'. Wait until the public digests that number, and asks why it's more important than funding entitlements.)

The cost of military operations and diplomatic efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world could top $1 trillion over the next decade, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates provided to the House Budget Committee Tuesday.

The budgetary forecasts hinge largely on the size of the force deployed to Iraq between 2008 and 2017, a matter that Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England told the panel is nearly impossible to predict. 'That's a long way in the future' to estimate both costs and force levels, he said. But CBO officials, at the request of House Budget Chairman John Spratt, D-S.C., estimated that the total costs of operations would range from $924 billion to just over $1 trillion if the size of the deployed force decreases from 210,000 today to 75,000 by 2013.

That compares to a CBO estimate in February of $840 billion total cost. But if the size of the deployed force shrinks to 30,000 troops by 2010, war costs would range from $481 billion to $603 billion between 2008 and 2017, CBO said Tuesday.

Already, Congress has appropriated $602 billion for Iraq, Afghanistan and other efforts in the war against terrorism, averaging about $93 billion annually between fiscal 2003 and fiscal 2005 before rising to $120 billion in fiscal 2006 and $170 billion in fiscal 2007. Of the total price tag, the lion's share -- $533 billion -- has paid for military operations and other Defense Department efforts.

The Bush administration's decision earlier this year to temporarily send thousands of additional troops to Iraq will cost $10 billion if this so-called surge lasts four months, $22 billion if extended a year, and $40 billion for two years, according to the CBO analysis.

During the hearing, England acknowledged the Defense Department will have to request additional fiscal 2008 funding to pay for the surge in military operations. The administration had not included any funds for the larger military presence in Iraq in its fiscal 2008 budget or fiscal 2008 supplemental funding request.

Terrorists are made by Haters.

The Iraqi civil war is not America's fault. Just because religous zealots cannot get along, doesn't make it the USA'a problem!

I always love a Congress who grouses about the cost of the war, and then spends 300 billion on an unfunded agricuture bill to pay new york residents to not grow anything. $300 billion for corporate farmers...and they say the republicans are the big business party????

Lenny - it's your job to educate your own citizens, not the job of the federal government. Michigan is a disgrace because of it's leadership. Go fix it and get back to us.

Tonny, Bush actually wants to raise you social security value through private investment. Social security is totally broke. There is no real money to grow. Bush wanted to change all that, by allowing persons to save their own money, but the Luddite dems are keeping the public poor and reliant on a system that has failed. Thanks a pantload.

If dems did not want this war, they should have voted against it before they voted against it.

For the millionth time SP4,the democrats voted for the war because they were lied to by your neocon cabale;namely Bush,Cheney,Rove,Wolfowitz,Rumsfeld and Feyt .Even the top officials in your own government were subjected to those lies, like Colin Powell who was manipulated into making a speech to the UN general assembly stating facts about the so called WMD in Iraq,of which nothing was true, absolutely nothing. Now if this little neocon club was so succesfull at manipulating your top military brass, what else would you expect from your congress ;In any normal concept of democracy ,ethics or trial, people who are lied to are victims .Blem your neocons for leading your nation into the massacre of a country ,not congress. But you keep on repeating your ridiculous lies even after being confronted with reality for thousand times,Are you so stupid ?
