Democratic presidential candidate quits race
Feb 23, 2007, 17:51 GMT
Washington - The first Democrat to announce a 2008 run for the White House called off his presidential campaign Friday, citing the pressures of raising enough money to be a viable candidate.
Tom Vilsack, the former governor of Iowa, had been considered a long-shot candidate even in his home state, which is one of the first states to weigh in on nominees.
'It's money and only money that's the reason we're leaving today,' Vilsack said at a news conference.
He said he felt his campaign could not raise the large amounts of money necessary for a competitive run nationwide.
The Des Moines Register newspaper in Iowa said Vilsack had raised 1 million dollars through the end of January. Better known rivals, senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are expected to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for their campaigns.

Our primary system weeds out the weak. If you don't have momentum, you get weeded out. Do corporations have an influence? Sure. Do THEY make a choice? Sure. Is it THE choice?
No. Not for EITHER party. The governor was a weak candidate, becuase he is obscure, he is a centrist and he is not what the activists in the Democratic party want. If you have no base, you are out.
I don't know why people insist in holding Obama for his former Pastor's comments.
Obama is no more responsible for what another person says or does. I don't hear any one who says Hillary is responsible for what her husband and Monica did in the white house which became public.
