US lottery fever: 370-million-dollar jackpot is world's largest
Mar 6, 2007, 20:23 GMT
Washington - What would you do with a whopping 370 million dollars? That's what the millions who have bought themselves a ticket for the largest-ever lottery drawing Tuesday night are asking themselves.
Organizers of the multi-state Mega Millions lottery raised the jackpot for the second time in two days Tuesday amid what was described as 'phenomenal' ticket sales.
The massive windfall has also led the group to move the evening's drawing to Times Square in New York from its traditional spot in a television studio in Atlanta, Georgia.
The last drawing on Friday was for an estimated 267 million dollars, but no-one matched the six numbers needed. It was the 15th successive draw without a winner.
Until now, the largest jackpot in US history was 365 million dollars for the Powerball lottery in February 2006. Europe's largest ever stands at 183 million euros (240 million dollars).
Mega Millions operates across 12 US states, though all Americans can also take part online. Five numbers are drawn from a pool of 56, and an additional 'Mega Ball' is taken out of 46 numbers. Winners can get a lump sum payment or have the winnings spread out in instalments over 26 years.

'There's a sucker born every minute.' -P.T. Barnum
The only thing that pisses me off more than the idiots that piss away their money by gambling with crooks (in this case, the crooks being the respective state governments that have a lottery) are the idiots that do it first thing in the morning. Without fail, I'll have 10 minutes to get to work - I'll stop at 7-11, seeking a red bull, gas and maybe a biscuit - and in line, in front of me, is some jackass with a stack of lottery tickets taller than it is wide, who just can't wait to gamble his stupid life away until after lunch. Ever heard of a savings account? Think of what great economic shape this country would be in if it weren't for lottery.
'Oh, but it goes to schools and roads!' Sure, and politicans always tell the truth. I've got a beautiful bridge, in San Francisco for sale.. it's got golden gates and wire suspension.. for only a dollar a play, you could win it! Schmucks.
