Senator disgraced in bathroom sting may not quit
Sep 5, 2007, 5:41 GMT
Washington - A US senator who said on Saturday he would resign in the midst of scandal surrounding his arrest in a police sting targeting lewd behaviour in a men's public restroom may not step aside if he can clear himself of the charges, US media reported Wednesday.
Larry Craig, 62, was arrested in June in a police sting operation over lewd behaviour and sexual activity in one of the airport's public bathrooms.
He pleaded guilty in August to a lesser charge - disorderly conduct - and paid a 500-dollar fine, according to the Capitol Hill publication Roll Call, which broke the story. Craig was also sentenced to 10 days in jail, which were suspended, and given a year's probation.
But the Republican senator from the western state of Idaho said in a telephone message reportedly left on a wrong number and obtained by Roll Call that he wanted to emphasize in his resignation speech that his was only his intent to resign, but that he was ready to fight his guilty plea. The message makes clear that he would reconsider his decision if he could get the plea overturned, in what would be a very difficult legal maneuver.
Craig said at a televised press conference in his home state on Saturday that he planned to leave his position on September 30.
A number of politicians, including many from his own party, had been openly calling for Craig to resign since the details of his arrest at a Minneapolis airport emerged last week.

First I'm guilty, then I'm not - we need more undecisive people in Congress like him!
After all, look at the terrific advantages:
He could Set up an office under his desk and get interns to work there. Then, when confronted, he could say 'I NEVER had sex with that woman' to a standing fed judge, and walk. Yeah sure, and Liberace' died of the flu...
Abuse his 14 babysitter like the libnazi governor Neil Goldschmidt did in Oregon while her mom worked in his office, then get the local liberal press to gag it for 20 years until some rag was prepared to print it. Then, when the biggest daily in the state does, they call it an 'affair'! An affair is something you have with a stripper, not a 14 year old girl.
Crash his car in a drunken stupor like Kennedy (just pick one, any one) or throw a waitress onto a table on her back (musta wanted to see if she was a she! If they smile, you know it's a girl, senator) Then, your collegues will call you 'couragous' for going into rehab. Honestly, we may as well get Lindsay Lohan to run.Beleive me, it'd be an improvement.
Honestly, it'd be a lot easier than having to EXPLAIN all of this. By the way, where are all the indignant 'rights' advocates that come out of the woodwork when a liberal gets in trouble? This guy gets nipped for funny hand gestures and footsie. I could see it if he stuck mister happy through the stall crack, but other than that, why are these things illegal? Exactly what laws were broken?
Haven't we seen this comment before - this creep isn't any less guilty just because you think you can find something worse!
SP4, I dunno about your trailer park ... but in my neighborhood, men cruising for sex in a public bathroom is considered public indency, and a lewd act ... yes, that's the crime. The 'public' part.
Now if he wanted to do that at his home or some other private place, then there's no law broken - and I'd support his freedom to do so - but not in a public setting (gay or hetero, public sex is against the law).
And even though YOU SP4, find it acceptable that your son could walk in on two guys goin at it in a public bathroom, I have a different opinion - (even thoough I have liberal views on homosexuality.)
SP4, give up the 'listing of offences' argument you employ ad nauseum ... if you wanna have a pissin contest with that, there's enough in BOTH parties to fill volumes.
The only reason you do that is because your arguments are without merit ... so all you can do is point your stinky little fingers someplace else ... a pretty lame, and hypocritical tactic.
'public indency' should be 'public indecency'
My wife works in one of the most liberal places on earth. A trans-gender, a man, now supposedly passing as a woman, goes into the GIRLS restroom, sits down next to real women. They are required to tolerate this.
Am I intolerant??????????
Take a f--king quess!
Now, if senator happy pants makes hand gestures and footsie, can you see why I might not be impressed?
should care about your wife's so-called co-worker as long as they aren't cruising for action in the restroom and not bible thumping against what they are doing themselves, which is the case here - not so difficult to understand?
Having 'happy feet' and reaching under the divider into the stall next to you, might be normal for you SP4 ... but not the rest of the world.
re: your comment ...'Am I intolerant??????????'
Let's see. I've read your rants for many months now, where you call people with different idealogies all kinds of names ... and I've also read your endless diatribes about how you think we should shoot anyone without your particular brand of redkneckism ... and how it's ok for you to force your idealogy on others ... etc etc etc ... so, 'Tolerant' is not something ANYONE on this forum would use to describe you.
(Tolerance goes beyond sexuality ... idiot)
Lets hope he stays to be an example of what a real neo-con is. Say one thing and do another, then justify it by pointing out how bad the democrats are, how bad Clinton was, anything to deflect the heat.
...in that you object to a man in a man's restroom, doing inocuous things, and hurting no one, while his rights are stepped all over, but accept the special rights of the gay transgen foisted upon the public, in a bathroom of the opposite sex.
Yep, thats liberal!
Because it was in a public area.
And it's spelled out clearly that it's not a crime for him to be gay. And my post makes it very clear I support gay rights (or anyones rights for that matter)
Yet here you are twisting it in your usual way.
Now While you're the poster child for stupid, arrogant ignorance ... Why do you seek to destroy your own credibility that way?
some people just can't seem to get it that this polititian was practicing the very thing he has compaigned against! Who cares if he's gay, but just don't be out there against them and then trying to connect in a public restroom. I personally don't care who is in the next stall as long as they keep to themselves, which in this case he didn't!
I am not under the impression all gays support gay marriage, are you?
Since I could care less about Senator happy pants it wouldn't matter to me if he were a polygamist. After all, we had an Attorney general resign who was probably the most successful at rooting out crooked congressmen and the democrats were so frightened they, and the republicans ran him out!
But we got the gay guy for conspiracy to use sign language!! Good work officer! Now git back t thit john an spread y legs sum moooore! b suuure t wear thim pink boxers too!
I am still not convinced he committed a crime in any way. Then again, the right has always been more interested in personal freedoms than the left.
Tolerant yet?
re: 'the right has always been more interested in personal freedoms than the left'
Oh Yeah?
Then why is it the Right is the party that wants to write Consitutional ammendments that eliminate rights ...
Then why is it that the Right is the party that's trying to make it legal to do warrantless wiretapping?
Then why is it the Right that wants to eliminate the Habeas Corpus?
SP4, you really are that stupid aren't you.
... is easier than outting a gay Republican.

Larry Craig SHOULD return to the Senate, where he would still be in good-standing with his fellow conservative hypocrites. While there, he can 'bend the pages' in the Congressional library with impunity. After all, the administration needs his support.
