Jealous deputy kills 6 in shooting rampage
Oct 8, 2007, 2:47 GMT
Washington - A sheriff's deputy allegedly killed his ex- girlfriend and five others Sunday in a shooting rampage that began at the woman's flat in a small Midwestern town and ended when the deranged officer was slain by a police sniper's bullet.
The shooting spree began before 3 am in the small town of Crandon in the northern part of Wisconsin, a mostly rural state in the upper Midwest.
Local police were called to a report of gunfire in the duplex apartment where the 18-year-old girlfriend lived.
Before the incident was over, she and five others apparently attending a party at her home were dead and a 19-year-old man was critically wounded.
The alleged gunman, 20, was described as a sheriff's deputy in Forest County, where Crandon is located. He was apparently slain by authorities responding to the shooting.
'He was brought down by a sniper,' Crandon Mayor Gary Bradley told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The dead including the gunman were all local youths described as close friends, the newspaper reported on its website. The dead ranged in age from 14 to 20.
'There's no family that hasn't been touched in one way or another,' Tom Vollmar, an elected Forest County Board member, told the Journal Sentinel.
