Noah Gotbaum and his children Ella, 7, Tobias, 3, and Nathaniel, 5, left a memorial service for his wife and the children's mother Carol Gotbaum, Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Congregation Rodeph Sholom in New York.
No answers yet in the death of Carol Anne Gotbaum, a US Airways passenger who was found dead in a police holding cell at an airport in Phoenix, Ariz.
Elected officials and other prominent New Yorkers were among hundreds of mourners Sunday at the funeral of Ms. Gotbaum, who died mysteriously in police custody at an airport in Phoenix.
White lilies adorned the coffin as it was carried out of Congregation Rodeph Sholom on the Upper West Side following the service, which was closed to the media.
"This is a terrible, terrible tragedy," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, a family friend who attended the service.
Gotbaum, the stepdaughter-in-law of New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, died Sept. 28 at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport.
She had been arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after she was kept off a connecting flight that was to bring her to Tucson, where she was to enter an alcohol treatment center.
Authorities have said that Gotbaum, who was handcuffed and shackled to a bench, may have accidentally strangled herself.
Carol was married to Noah Gotbaum, son of retired labor leader Victor Gotbaum and stepson of Betsy Gotbaum. The couple lived on the Upper West Side with their three young children.
John Jakobson, another family friend, said Noah Gotbaum spoke of his wife's final moments during the service.
"Her husband said that if only one person in that airport had helped her she would be alive today," he said.
Gotbaum's family has hired an attorney to monitor the police investigation into her death, a private investigator who watched the official autopsy and a pathologist who performed a second autopsy.
ABC News reports that Carol Anne Gotbaum was born in Cape Town, South Africa and worked as a department store buyer in London before moving to New York with her husband.

SP4 the police has perhaps nothing to win ,but that does not mean police brutality is not existing .What did the police have to win when they beat up Rodney KIng ? Similare events occur everywhere, even here a few years ago.Police brutality is just the unwanted side effect of giving too much power to a force without control and accountability .Had not video footage leaked out showing the LAPD beating up Rodney King, what do you guess would have happened with his version of the facts as oppposed to the version of the cops involved ?

SP4: So...why kill her?????Oct 9th, 2007 - 02:24:23
What would the cops have to gain by killing her? If they did not, why can't these super sharp CSI's bring anything to bear?
