Booted for Imus: Ron Kuby and Curtis Sliwa blast WABC

The longtime WABC-radio team of Curtis Sliwa and Ron Kuby are upset about being sacked for the returning Don Imus.
The New York Daily News reports that the Guardian Angels founder and the civil rights lawyer have some choice words about shock jock Don Imus replacing them, and getting to sign a lucrative multiyear deal by the station.
"It's ironic," Kuby said to reporter Adam Nichols of the Daily News after being told by the station's bosses his run as WABC's liberal morning host was over. "[Imus] calls people nappy-headed ho's, and I lose my job because of it."
Sliwa was also not pleased.
"It's like [Imus] died and went to radio heaven, and it's me and Ron who got punished," said Sliwa. "I wish Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would come protest me. He comes back bigger and better than ever, but we're off the air."
Imus was taken off the air after his comments on the Rutgers women's basketball team in April hit the media.
Kuby was told Thursday not to show up for yesterday's show. Sliwa will be reassigned according to Nichols.
"What do you want me to do?" said WABC program director Phil Boyce to the Daily News. "When you pick up Don Imus and his entire team, it kind of means somebody has to go.
Sliwa will remain at the station in some capacity, and is waiting to hear what his future holds.
"They know I'm traumatized by what happened to Ron," he said. "Obviously, I'll be having conversations with the suits. But at least they're respecting how I feel, and they're giving me some time."

The loss for New York radio of Ron Kuby and Curtis Sliwa is great. They are two accomplished New Yorkers with a balanced radio show, which is sorely lacking in many radio shows, on all sides of the equation. This is a real loss for New York and quality radio. Both these men have fought for justice in their own ways. At some point, the irony of Ron Kuby and Curtis Sliwa being taken off the air by Imus, who by his racial insensitivity, whether purposeful or not, becomes too great an irony to bear. And for all New Yorkers, we lose more more piece of the New York.
Ron Kuby and Curtis Sliwa's radio show should not be taken off the air and replaced with Imus.

What is WABC thinking? Goodbye morning radio.
WABC attempts to raise the dead! It just goes to show you how phoney people you work with every day really are! WABC radio has made a tragic mistake! Curtis & Ron were stabbed in the back! They are the best morning radio show on the air. What about the awards they have won, all that 'great' WABC advertising promoting them. Weren't their ratings better than that washed up lost in the 70's has been, Howard Stern want-to-be Don Imus? Here's a guy with who obviously has nothing to say or worth listening to, replacing two accomplished individuals who are well versed in real life. I will not be listening to WABC in the mornings while Imus is on. They have lost a loyal listner (and I'm not the only one). There's a reason we were listening to Curtis and Ron while Imus was talking trash on WFAN!
I have long been a fan of Imus. I also enjoy Curtis And Kuby very much, and would often switch back-and-forth between shows. What Imus did should never have created the situation that followed. He should have never been fired (possibly a short suspension would have been in order). CBS should have stuck by their long time cash cow (even though his ratings weren't great, he was listened to by a wealthy demo, therefore he was able to bill 10X what most other shows were able to... And that was on a national level.) Farid is looking at the big picture. Curtis And Kuby was a big show in the NY market. Imus will be a big show (ad-dollars wise) on a syndicated level. From a business standpoint it's a no-brainer. Stupid Al Sharpton should have left this ridiculous issue alone and none of this would have happened. I find it ironic that Ron Kuby, one of America's foremost Civil Rights Advocates, is kicked of the air due to the phony and pointless actions of one of his own ilk.
What is WABC thinking their going to put Imus back on the radio. What a waste of air time. I guess it is time to change the station. I will listen elsewhere on the radio dial, bye bye WABC. Who in their right mind would buy anything from their sponsers, not me that is for sure.
Extremely disappointed in Curtis and Kuby being booted off the air

and before that listened to Curtis and Lisa. I've had it with WABC -
Curtis and Ron are decent guys with a well balanced show. Maybe
they didn't read the 'Talking Points' from the Bush Administration
and Imus is a better mouthpiece.
This is a travesty. Imus? WABC just lost another loyal listener. I'm certain that Imus will rake in the bucks and the ratings. I'm also hoping that some intelligent radio station will put Curtis and Kuby back on the air in the New York morning drive time market. I stopped listening when the geniuses put on the 'Rocky Allen Showgram' in the late 90s. I'll stop listening again.
Management at WABC must be on crack! They have just replaced the best talk show on radio today, with an idiot! WOR, get going and sign the whole team!
Have listened to Curtis and Kuby since the beginning. The best radio around! This is the only show on WABC I could stand. The dial is changed for good as of Friday. Phil Boyce has turned WABC into a station for the easily brainwashed minority.
I have a good idea. WFAN should boot the unlistenable stooges they hired to replace Imus with Curtis & Kuby. Then the irony would be that they would beat WABC in the local ratings.
I also will no longer listen to WABC in the morning, as long as Imus is on. He dried up a long time ago, and now he gets rewarded for his mean spirited attempt to look hip. I do think it's ironic that Kuby is not getting any backing from the very people whom he defends .
I still can't believe Curtis and Ron are off the air. I enjoyed there show. I called the radio show to complain and they wouldnt put me on the air. I feel as if i've lost two very good friends. I won't be listening to that pig Imus.
I don't know where to go on morning radio. I guess I check out the FM offerings because Curtis and Kuby was my only choice. Another sickening blow to the general public by corporate America (Amerkia?) in obeisence to the shrinking-but-still-almighty dollar.
I feel really bad that in order to get Imus Sliwa and Kuby have to get bounced off the air. Imus should never have been fired in the first place. Being an Imus Fan I am happy to have him back. Of course living so far out in the CT suburbs I barely get WABC so again I wish he was still on the fan since it comes in loud and clear. I agree with the fans of the current show that it is not fair that such a popular show is being taken off the air. Sliwa is a class act and the few times I listened to him and Kuby I enjoyed the dialouge. Too bad the knee jerk reactionary crowd took Imus down for telling a bad joke. I hope Curtis can find a good gig he deserves it.
I found Curtis and Kuby a refreshing and interesting way to start the day. Warner Wolf's addition to the show was a good move. I will not be listening to WABC in the morning. I find Imus to be coarse and offensive. I guess Citadel is lazy and only wants syndicated shows. Much easier. I hope the class advertisers that were on Curtis and Kuby realize that they can't have the same impact with a 'shock jock' You bought the station because it had class and now you are trying to lower it's standards. The way you let Kuby go was very unprofessional. Who will be next to go!
Really is a shame. . . while I rarely agreed with Ron Kuby's neo-socialist/quasi-communist politics, I did appreciate his intellect and his perspective on so many things. Curtis and Kuby was a very entertaining show, where both hosts had the ability to be equally infuriating, or equally charming. Replacing them with Imus represents such typical, stupid programming, and represents yet another step downward for social relevancy and stimulating radio. This promulgated by WABCs Phil Boice, program director and alleged 'promise keeper'. Way to go, Phil. . . drop a few more coins on the tray at church next week, you might feel better. . . or not!
Speaking for myself, I will be finding something else to listen to in the mornings. Imus?? A mean, old, racist, exploitive, way-out-of-touch, creepy and unfunny 'schlock jock'? Yuccchh.
Unfortunately, our culture has a way of rewarding mediocrity (just look at who's in Congress), and I am sure the Imus Arbitrons and Bloomberg ratings will serve to justify WABCs switcheroo.

I'm a Long time listener of Curtis and Kuby. You guys have chemistry, energy and passion. Do not let this idiotic move stop you from doing your thing. Find another NY station and fight for the same time slot.
Imus is incoherent, uninteresting and boring. This is as big a blunder as brining Clemens back. Let the suits play this hand out and the results will speak for themselves.

I am so very disappointed that curtis and kuby are being taken off the air. It was one of my very favorite shows for its entertainment, intelligence, wit, etc., etc., etc. I actually cried when I heard they were not going to do the show anymore. Don Imus should get his own show by not taking someone else off the air. I am so tired of being so happy with a radio or tv program and without asking the loyal fans what they think, shows are just taken off the air. Money, money, money...is that the answer?

I am a long time listener to Curtis and Kuby. I will be lost without them on my way to work. I will not listen to that old hack Imas. It is a shame. They just lost a loyal listener.

I am furious! Curtis and Kuby were the only thing I listened to on ABC other than John Gambling after they abruptly dismissed John Batchelor last year. I am a moderate Republican and this station makes me sick! Back to WOR. I have my radio on almost 24 hours a day.
I was an Imus fan and probably will be again, provided he's not a 'kinder, gentler Imus'. Also, while I disagree with nearly everything espoused by Ron Kuby, his conviction and delivery made listening to him bearable. Yeah, even when he would speak (as he occasionally would) in a condescendingmanner to Curtis. 'Well, Curtis, martial law may be a wonderful thing, but unfortunately, we have that pesky old constitution to deal with.'
I have to say, if he gets another show, I hope it's in a confrontational vein as was this; I'd almost certainly not listen for only his side of an issue.
I listened to my last WABC Radio program this morning. Curtis and Kuby were my drive in listening in the morning and now I'll switch to NPR radio. I was never a big fan of Imus.

There is something far more significant than the fact that Ron and Curtis (along with Warner) were immensely entertaining.
While FOX 'NEWS' gives lip service to the concept of 'Fair and Balanced' and almost everything else on the air and tv waves is entirely one sided (mostly far right, including some really biased fear and hate mongers like Rush, Savage, & Hannity ***) the only intelligent dissection of both sides of today's pressing issues came from the banter of Ron and Curtis.
Unfortunately, today's society is torn apart by a failure of communication, a refusal to listen to the other side, and a refusal to expose ones self to doubt. Listening to Curtis and Kuby gave us sound arguments for both sides of many of today's vital issues, and an understanding of the law (thanks to Ron) and of society's underbelly (thanks to Curtis).
I can not begin to believe that the intelligent segment of the morning talk show audience will be attracted to Imus' incoherent sexist and racist mumblings. WABC has inflicted a terrible loss upon the good citizens of the metropolitan New York area. What was the 'Flagship' station now bears the flag of a desperate sinking vessel.
*** (I do not consider 'Hannity and Colmes' to be 'fair and balanced' as Colmes lacks the skill and subtlety to counter Hannity's sneering bombastics).
I join those who have expressed the hope that another local station, such as WFAN, would take on the team of Curtis and Kuby, and teach WABC a lesson about the New York audience.
Goodbye WABC - it was fun while it lasted.....Curtis & Kuby were not only entertaining, but were informative, witty and gave a nice balance to today's headlines. My 14 yr old daughter was able to listen to the radio with me every morning on our drive to School and I never ONCE had to change the station due to content matter of the subject being discussed or an off-color or rascist comment made by Curtis, Ron, George or Warner. I am sure WABC's new host would not afford me that same 'safety net'. Here's to hoping that Curtis & Ron and the whole team dump WABC as quick as they possibly can and head on over to Imus' old stomping ground - and let's see how quickly they stomp Imus and WABC in the morning drive-by ratings. There is a reason why they were the #1 in morning drive radio - and it has ALOT to do with ADULTS making the choice not to listen to garbage day after day.
I like Sliwa and maybe now he can go and become a bigger radio host, by himself, without being held back by Kuby. Or Sliwa could become a TV host and get bigger then Imus.

People keep asking me if I care about Imus returning to the radio, the very medium I choose to express my non-blogged opinions. They want me to say something incendiary, like the air waves aren’t big enough for the both of us. But really we all know that radio does not occupy a finite space in our atmosphere, and that satellite radio and podcasting have given the old-fashioned broadcast a nice little resurgence.

Curtis and Kuby's ratings speak for themselves, management as the saying goes, decided to 'put all their eggs in one basket' they actually believe that Imus is going to bring them the 'big money'. Once Imus is on the station broadcasting, I am off the station. He talks crap and doesn't even have the audience that they have. Good, I hope his show sinks the station into the ground because no one will listen.

IMUS is not nasty. He's sarcastic and that equals funny. It's an artform. Many people don't get it or understand it. These folks are what you might say....humorless. They have dramatic lives with a lot going on and they are too caught up in themselves to look around and see the humor in EVERYTHING. I am a big fan of I-Man and Howard and O/A and tthe GREASE MAN (Bone DRY !!) and I love these types of people on the radio. Curtis/Kuby that show was like the mens VIEW for the radio.
The topics were old the attitudes were outdated and the hosts were HUMORLESS...like the fans who enjoyed the show.
Don't worry they'll get work on another station. They have a name for themselves so stay tuned folks.
I've been listening to Curtis and Kuby every morning as my 5 a.m.wake-up show. In that Imus would probably put me back to sleep and make me miss my train, I will have to find something more stimulating to listen to in the morning. Bye-bye WABC!
I can't understand why we are going to be subjected to this tired old Imus... I jumped from Imus to Curtis & Kuby a long time ago. This is only the company going in to get the big bucks with the syndication. I hope Curtis & Kuby can be reunited on another station and I will be there not listening to tired old Imus (was time to retire anyway). As you can tell I have a lot of loyalty to Curtis & Kuby and feel nothing for Imus. Well hope the station doesn't lose too many listeners.... NOT!

I am realy saddened by the fact that Citadel thinks adding Imus to the morning line-up will be good for WABC Radio. I have been a radio listener for many years now. I listen seven days a week. I only follow the kind of show hosts that have substance. Imus does not present any appeal to me; so one of your long-time loyal listener will no longer tune into that time slop. I will listen to the 'other' station down the dial. Don't fix what is not broken. I believe this is a mistake for Citadel. Your listeners are your source of income as well; so why loose them to another type of listener? Imus is not what we need to hear!

I started listening to Curtis and Kuby after 9-11, when I couldn't get the FM music station I used to wake up to because of damage to the transmitter--and I never went back afterwards.
Curtis and Ron are both experienced locals with something relevant to say about issues important to NY-ers. They also had the only show on WNBC that attempted to present varied and balanced viewpoints, and they were good, likeable entertainers.
Don Imus is a smart guy and has done some good in his life, but he stopped being interesting and relevant a long time ago, and he has nothing to say about local issues.
There's nothing left worth listening to on WABC!

I will not be listening to morning talk at least not on abc. At times they both had me turn the radio off but I always returned. If nothing else it was great entertainment but for the serioueness of the corporate world. I am very conservative but I wish them both well and they will be missed.

I suppose that Dog the Bounty Hunter will get a show now since he followed the same criteria that ABC is looking for - maybe he could take over John Gambling.

Seriously, I feel so bad about the new morning lineup that I will just turn off the radio.
I drive for a living and spend some 6 hours in my car. Five of those were spent listening to Curtis & Kuby. No matter what I had on before, at 5:00 AM I was tuned in to WABC. Personally, I stopped listening to Imus years ago. So now, with Kuby getting the bum's rush and Curtis being moved, I'll listen to static before I tune into WABC for 'the morning drive'
Too bad. ABC has lost at least this listener with their sad choice to replace Curtis & Kuby with Imus.
I enjoyed listening to the show every morning and guarantee to you that I will not be listening in December. While my opinions tended to lean towards Curtis, the one thing that I could count on every morning was learning something from Ron. He has an excellent way of articulating his point, yet able to throw in Law 101 into every morning show.
Now ABC expects me to listen to a 'Stern Wannabe' in December. My only hope is that they picked up by another station in the morning. They are going to be missed and ABC will realize that they made a mistake.
Making a big mistake, New Yorkers do not like Don Imus. Curtis & Kuby were the best to listen to in the morning. Curtis is a real new yorker and a great wake up voice as Kuby's insight to ploitics, Imus puts you to sleep and looks half dead....

I thoroughly enjoyed Curtis and Ron together. I appreciated hearing both sides of the political arguments. This was intelligent radio, showing how two individuals on either side of the fence could actually converse with each other- unlike the actual situation in our country. The fact that they were dumped for Imus is shocking. Imus is a disgusting chauvinist and racist and he is not the least bit funny or entertaining. I will not listen to WABC anymore. Stupid, stupid mistake.

I cannot believe this is the way you thank your loyal listeners - by putting on the old tired show that we were tuning away from to listen to Curtis and Kuby in the mornings. It's a real insult, it's as if we don't matter at all. I guess you don't need us!

Like John Gambling Curtis and Ron were class acts. On the other hand, Imus is a Liberal dirtbag who deserves what he got at WFAN and is undeserving of this spot on WABC. Curtis and Kuby were a great team in the AM. They made some sense of the complex and horrifying news. I'm really dissapointed in the big man Boyce. Very dissapointed!
DrBob is right on and I couldn't have said it any better myself. The straight talk and entertainment from C&K was so great and should be picked up elsewhere. Curtis' streetsense and Ron's articulate logic (agree with him or not) was great radio.

Curtis & Kuby are a great radio team. I love the way they discuss the issues. They respect each other's opinion & have great senses of humor. Warner Wolf is an excellent addition to the team.
Curtis said it the best, Imus did a wrong thing. He goes to radio heaven & Curtis and Kuby who have great ratings have to suffer. It is so unfair.

I have always been a (FAN) OF Curtis AND his missions,but not of Ron Kuby until I had the opportunity to hear him and begin to understand him .
He has a fantastic sense of humor and even though you may not agree with everything he says I always enjoyed he and Curtis EVERY morning .
I have followed Curtis since he and Lisa were on the air and hope that I will be able to hear much more of Curtis and Kuby on another station where they will be appreciated.

Really sorry and shocked to see them go. It was a very entertaining program! I'll be taking the station off my speed dial since that was the only one I listened to because it had 2 points of view.
I am so sorry to see Curtis and Kuby leave the airwaves. They were a breath of fresh air for my morning comute. The were spicy and irreverent and they gave me food for thought to start my day. I will miss them very much. I really loved the colorful banter between these two opposites. It was great radio and I loved it.
I am very upset with the station for putting Imus in this time slot. He is much too 'jockey' for me. Maybe the men like him but certainly not us women. The duo of Curtis and Kuby should be picked up by another station. Maybe wor since Donna Hanover is there I can't listen to them either.
I am also annoyed that Bill O'Reilly is only on from 12 to 2 instead of 'till 4. Now I have no one to listen to on my ommute home. Perish the thought, I'll have to listen to mindless music.

I am still in shock at this revolting development. As Curtis has pointed out, they go out on a highnote, certainly Arbitron-wise. (I had the pleasure of being an Arbitron diary-keeper this past summer and, as a listener of C&K, was honored to help them reach this mark. But I regret that I'm going to have to find a new way to wake up morning.)
I think that while Imus corporate (is it Clear Channel?) may make more bucks with a syndicated show, the flavor of greatness is no longer there. Either Imus will say something outrageous again, be bounced, and maybe they'll bring back C&K, or, if Imus has actually learned his lesson from the Rutgers incident and toned down his schtick, he will become boring, lose ratings, and then...welcome back C&K.
As for Ron and Curtis: I am a conservative and initially I wasn't thrilled to have Kuby around, but I have to say that while I still do not agree with him often, I respect his analysis and viewpoints. He was a perfect counterpart for Sliwa, and over the years the two of them have developed a tremendous rapport which I, for one, will miss. And Curtis' Sliwa-isms rival anything that Norm Crosby or Yogi Berra could ever come up with.
A brilliant team, a brilliant show, and I for one will sorely miss it. So...

I almost cried. I haven't put on WABC since and I used to listen daily. Just astonishing.
I used to love Imus in the 70s' and 80's. I haven't erally enjoyed him in years.
Curtis and Kuby are/were on the cutting edge. They would sometimes go over the top fbut for the most part wer great entertainment. And when Kbuy stopped pontificating and started analyzing legal issues I felt Like I was attending a real live law-school leture. He could get a legal issue into understandable terms really quick.
Curtis is a New York Icon - kinda like Derek Jeter. He's a caharacter for sure but so lovable. With Kuby around he was less predictable. Add Warner Wolf to the mix and you got some really good stuff going. I will miss them.
I guess the suits think Imus will bring in more $$$ in ads. Could be. But he will pick up few new listeners and turn off a lot of loyal curtis/Kuby types.
I do like Charles McCord though. I wouldn't mind Cutis and McCord as a two-some
I am so devastated to learn what WABC has done. Curtis and Kuby, each quirky in their own ways are fun, entertaining, and educational. What a terrific team they are. Some mornings, on my way to work, I would get so mad at Ron, other mornings, I would be so touched by what a 'mench' he really is. I found both men to be 'real', and that's what I want to hear.
The sensationalism of people like Imus is boring, stupid, a waste of time.
I wouldn't give him 2 seconds of my time. So, WABC, the hours you have this person on the radio, I will be elsewhere.
By the way, Curtis and Kuby have done so much for talk radio and your station, so you reward them by taking them off the air? Unbelievable! Who needs enemies when management of WABC is here?

Those of you at WABC who have made this move, I have totally lost respect for you. Your daily line up had been wonderful. How could you even ponder the notion of putting such trash in your morning slot? I cannot forgive you for this one.
As predictable as the snake oil peddlers trumpeting their wares five times an hour on WABC, Imus returns to the only viable outlet in New York. But compromising the Curtis & Kuby team is just another example in a long line of poor decisions. If it wasn't broken, it shouldn't have been fixed.
You are making a terrible mistake by bringing back Don Imus. He is nothing more than a loud mouth racist jerk and I for one will not listen to your station anymore! Good bye talk radio.
Due to the fact that Imus is returning from the dead, I will not be listening to your station any more. You are making THE most biggest mistake possible. Imus belongs silent and that is just what the dial on my radio will be, silent from WABC for ever. Hopefully Ron and Curtis will go to another station and believe me, I sure will follow. Later!

I cannot believe that they booted Cutis and Kuby for of all people, Imus. Don't the suits ever learn. Are they from another planet?
Curtis and Kuby were so informative and enjoyable in the AM. WABC provided a terrific balance between the liberal and conservative points of view. If they must be superceded by Don Imus, they should be given another timeslot. I believe they will be missed by many.
My morning drive time was spent listening to Kuby give legal advise on current stories. I found his intelligence and his quips quite entertaining. I will miss him. I would have a show with Kuby and another lawyer facing off on current issues.
The best part of WABC was Curtis and Kuby because it is the one program that had balance on that station. I sincerely hope that another station will pick them up because they are a terrific foil for each other. I will follow them wherever they go and I sincerely hope they are still paired.

Steve Borneman you're an idiot and out of touch with your listeners. If we wanted to listen to Imus, we would have turned away from WABC a long time ago. Don Imus should have retired long before his racist statements. Prior to the publicity from the 'nappy' event - most people thought he had passed away. Here's an idea: replace Curtis and Kuby with dead air time instead....Oh wait a minute, that's what you did!
Having worked in Cable years ago there is one thing I remember. It is the mission of a broadcaster to deliver three things information, education and entertainment. The whole team of C&K including Werner the subs Mark and Jeffery and the weather and traffic gals delivered in spades, consistently.
Radio besides its obvious difference to TV has another difference and that is the habits of its consumers. It is just my opinion and observation that TV viewer’s surf and radio listeners are more loyal to one station, well OK, the remote might have something to do with it as well, however, I think it is important in the context of this Imus thing. We, and I think I can speak for the majority of the posters are pissed, you Empty Suits pulled a fast one in response to our loyalty, and you gave us Imus.
I for one, was a loyal listener, kitchen, bedroom, work and cars and now I shall reward you, WABC, with the same loyalty you have shown me by dumping you in the cellar of forgotten memories.

i think it's a disgrace what wabc has done to both curtis & kuby. not only did they provide an entertaing & informative forum for discussing news & current events,they consistantly were #1 in ratings. although i rarely agreed with kuby's political & religous views, i respected him becouse he spoke from his heart, they were his opinions, not just fodder in order to create controversy. curtis has been there through thick & thin for wabc (Always Broadcasting Curtis) good luck to both, they deserve better!
I will deeply miss c&k. After listening to both Imus and Stern in the past, I would quickly grow bored with them. On my morning drive, the last thing I want to hear are put downs and insults about people. C&k would talk more about issues that concern our daily lives, not esoteric non-sense in the world of politics, in which we are completely disenfranchised.

Yet another dumbing down of America. The sparring intelligence of Curtis against Kuby was scintillating and thought provoking. I, personally, will never listen to Imus as his language,low intelligence, disdain and disrespect of woman, as well as his black humor, are beneath me. Imus is the low end of our culture. Just one question, why was Kuby sent packing long before Imus' arrival? Could it be that this was the excuse Phil Boyce was looking for to silence him? Although his ideology was too liberal for me, it always gave me food for thought. Now all WABC has to offer is the ravings of that blowhard Rush and the righteous indignation of Sean.
