It's official, Presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday accepted the resignation of a top adviser who a day earlier suggested voters should ask rival Barack Obama if he were a drug dealer.
Bill Shaheen, a national co-chairman for the Clinton campaign, caused a fuss during his Wednesday interview with The Washington Post, posted on washingtonpost.com.
"I made a mistake and in light of what happened, I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the co-chair of the Hillary for President campaign," Shaheen said in a statement released by the campaign.
"This election is too important and we must all get back to electing the best qualified candidate who has the record of making change happen in this country. That candidate is Hillary Clinton."
Shaheen, an attorney and veteran organizer, said much of Obama's background is unknown and could be a problem in November 2008 if he is the Democratic nominee. He said Republicans would work hard to discover new aspects of Obama's youth and his admitted drug use.
"It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'" said Shaheen, whose wife, Jeanne, is the state's former governor and is running for the U.S. Senate next year.
"There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It's hard to overcome," Shaheen said.
Clinton's campaign said it had nothing to do with his comments, and Shaheen said later he regretted them.
"I would like to reiterate that I deeply regret my comments yesterday and say again that they were in no way authorized by Senator Clinton or the Clinton campaign," Shaheen said in a statement on Thursday. "Senator Clinton has been running a positive campaign focused on the issues that matter to America's families."

Bush lover is at it again - she did the right thing in getting rid of him, and he was extremely stupid to try those tactics!!
Agreed, for too long have smear tactics been an attribute of presidential campaigns used by you know who.Best leave them to SP4 .He knows nothing else.
SP4, where do you get your info? Speculations are not the truth. Besides, you should learn to spell if you persist in going on a public site.

First: is Shaheen sorry for saying his comments, or, is he sorry for HAVING TO say those comments?
Second: He did the honorable thing by resigning as soon as he felt that he would/could be a liability to the campaign.
Third: Why didn't these questions come up when Obama was being elected for the Senate? Why shouldn't the senators meet the same standards as the presidents?
Vince Foster - Read the book 'Bloodsport' and then get back to me.
Dee Dee Myers - why DO you think she really had to go? Think 'Monica'
Monica - You didn't really expect HER to stay either, did you?
George Stephanopolis - Now this is my favorite: I was drinking with a guy who calls on defense contractor 'consultants' in D.C. Back in the 90's, I asked him why Ol George Steph left and his reply was 'well, one thing that will get you fired is cruising Georgetown U on a Friday night, trying to pick up coeds in a White House Limo while packing your nose with blow...'.
Now if the President was carter, I'd be skeptical but...
Look who we're dealing with.
Grow a brain.

...if you are on the wrong side of a situation, the Crintons will cut you loose faster than a speeding bullet towards Vince Foster's temple.
Other bodies in the cemetary:
Vince Foster (for real)
Dee Dee Myers (think 'monica')
Monica
George Stepanopolis
