Washington - President George W Bush on Tuesday ordered a 'significant reduction' in the US nuclear weapons stockpile, bringing it down to about one-quarter of its size at the end of the Cold War.
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the decision is meant to reduce US reliance on nuclear weapons for national security and modernize the nuclear programme.
'A credible deterrent remains an essential part of US national security, and nuclear forces remain key to meeting emerging security challenges,' Perino said.
Experts believe the United States has more than 5,000 nuclear warheads. The United States is required in a treaty with Russia to reduce its warhead stockpile to under 2,200 by 2012.

I agree!
A cross-eyed ape, squinting into a camera, does not a president make.

Heh.
Must have a newer, more improved secret weapon!
...the tinfoil hat crowd is out in force, for sure. The fact is, Bush and his father are single handedly the most aggressive of any presidents in trimming the stockpiles of the US nuclear weapons. That's right, republicans.
Bush's father, and Dick Cheney went to work on it in the 90's. They saved the USA billions of dollars in maintainence on older weapons and cutting the number of targets for the military. Over the years, the target list got rediculous, with even telephone polls in the Soviet Union targeted!
It's just another moderate step from what is, actually, a moderate president. It benefits everyone, regardless of the motive.
quite the clown SP.
