Bush lauds service on Martin Luther King Day
Jan 21, 2008, 18:23 GMT
Washington - US President George W Bush praised the value of serving others Monday at an event to remember civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr at Washington's public library.
The day was a holiday with the government and schools closed to remember the legacy of King, who fought for equality for African Americans during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and was assassinated in 1968.
'Our fellow citizens have got to understand that by loving a neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself, by reaching out to someone who hurts, by just simply living a life of kindness and compassion, you can make America a better place and fulfill the dream of Martin Luther King,' Bush said at the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Library in downtown Washington.
Democratic presidential candidates campaigned Monday at a holiday rally in South Carolina, where the large black population is seen as key in a primary election on Saturday. Their support could aid Senator Barack Obama, but Senator Hillary Clinton and former senator John Edwards also hope to appeal to minority voters.

Hardly the case if you're attacked, isn't it?
We spent FAR more in WWII on the military, year after year, than on social uplift and it was particularly spiritually uplifting, freeing millions of jews and other ethnic minorities in the world, from the scum of humanity.
Mr. King was wrong. He was a political figure, not a prophet.
