(M&C) - Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and John McCain have clashed in a debate held in California.
The former Massachusetts governor accused Sen. McCain of "dirty tricks" in the lead up to the Florida primary earlier this week, an election where Mr McCain emerged victorious.
Mr Romney accused the Arizona Senator of lying by suggesting he wanted a deadline for the withdrawal of U.S.troops from Iraq.
"I have never, ever supported a specific timetable," said Mr Romney adding that the accusation "sort of falls into the dirty tricks that I think Ronald Reagan would have found reprehensible."
"I will not pull our troops out until we have brought success in Iraq."
However Sen. McCain stood by his comments saying "of course he said he wanted a timetable."
The robust debate was held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. just six days before Super Tuesday in which Mr Romney must perform well if he is to overtake Sen. McCain, who currently stands as the frontrunner.
