(M&C) - Actor George Clooney has been made an official United Nations peace envoy at a ceremony in New York.
The film star, who had just returned from a trip to the troubled Darfur region of Sudan, told the BBC he hoped he would be able to assist those people he had met in the strife-torn region.
Mr Clooney was among eight recipients of the UN peace envoy award, among the others were actor Michael Douglas and Israeli classical musician Daniel Barenboim.
He has become famous for his activism particularly in support of the refugees from Darfur who are facing escalating violence from Sudanese-government backed forces.
Mr Clooney founded the "Not On Our Watch" agency which seeks to focus international attention on the struggle in Darfur.
"You hope that somehow... if you just shine a really bright light on these things it's harder to get away with it," the Oscar-winning star told the BBC.
