Beefed-up economic stimulus plan falters in Senate
Feb 7, 2008, 6:38 GMT
Washington - Republicans in the US Senate blocked a bid by Democrats to beef up a stimulus package designed to jump-start the economy.
Democrats late Wednesday fell one vote shy of the 60 needed to consider the measure in the 100-seat upper chamber of Congress.
The more extensive 158-billion-dollar bill would have added provisions for unemployment programmes and other spending measures to a leaner version of the legislation negotiated by US President George W Bush and congressional leaders last month.
That 146-billion-dollar measure was approved by the lower House of Representatives last week and would provide 100 billion dollars of tax rebates.
'When given the opportunity to work in a bipartisan manner to help people hurt by our struggling economy, Republicans chose politics first, and while they may view this vote as a win, the American people lose,' Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said after the vote.
The White House urged the Senate to 'move quickly' to pass its version of the economic stimulus package.
'Our first and foremost goal is delivering relief to American consumers and businesses to boost our economy,' spokeswoman Dana Perino said in a statement.

There seems to be unlimited funds for WAR, war, war.
At what cost to the poor suffering hardworking US Taxpayer?.
They get NOTHING.
Here's the democrats, supposedly going to run on fiscal responsibility, ramming an unfunded 158 billion dollar add-on in the face of their 296 billion unfunded farm subsidy for rich farmers and unfunded 35 billion for health care.
No thanks. We already HAVE a president like that.
Of course it's the Rupublicans who are being idiots and say they won't budge and they certainly haven't said they would be willing to add in Senoirs and the vets. How did this guy get to be the Majority leader? Surely there where better people on there side for the job. I mean Hell even nancy thinks he is screwing this up.
