US secretary of state to head to Kenya
Feb 14, 2008, 17:46 GMT
Washington - US President George W Bush is sending his chief diplomat, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, to Kenya to help mediate the explosive political situation.
Bush revealed the plan in remarks made before he heads off on his own five-country trip to Africa on Friday. He said Rice would deliver a message 'directly to Kenya's leaders and people.'
'There must be an immediate halt to violence, there must be justice for the victims of abuse, and there must be a full return to democracy,' Bush said.
Rice would be the highest level US diplomat to travel to Kenya, where hundreds have died in sectarian violence following December's disputed election outcome.
