Washington - The governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, acknowledged Monday that he had engaged in wrongdoing but did not confirm a story in The New York Times that he has been linked by investigators to a prostitution ring.

'I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family,' Spitzer said at a press conference in New York. He did not take questions from reporters, but signalled he has no intention of resigning, saying he sought to rebuild public trust.

'We sought to bring real change to New York, and that will continue,' he said.

Spitzer was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute in a hotel in Washington last month, The New York Times reported. The governor had begun informing senior aides of his involvement in the ring after being told of the investigation by federal officials Friday.

Spitzer apologized to his family and the public. 'I failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself,' he said.

Spitzer is married and has three children. He wife of 21 years, Silda, stood beside him at the news conference.

Spitzer began serving as governor in 2006 and prior to that was the state's top prosecutor. He had a reputation as a tough law man, cracking down on Wall Street for wrongdoings and going after prostitution rings.

'Linked to' or 'client of' a prostitution ring? Seems to be a significant difference there, at least in terms of implications. But as a servant of the law, however archaic, ridiculous or unjust it happens to be, the guy has exposed himself to be just another horn-dog hypocrite. Too bad. I like the guy and what he has accomplished, and can here identify with his hormonal weaknesses. I just wish he had been more discreet, or better, worked to legalize the very important service industry that he fell prey to. Oh you can bet those Wall Street yegs will be popping some corks tonight!

Now, let me get this straight.

He went and got a little poontang on the side and this ends his career of crimefighting ? The republicans and the mob bosses must be jubilating.

Have you noticed there's a difference between democrat and republican crime.

Democrats usually get caught for piddling offenses like this and then they lose all credibility while republicans lie, steal, crony, cheat and destroy whatever illusion of democracy is left, all the while invoking the rule of law, support for the troops and the American Way!

It's not a question of whether I feel like throwing up.

It's a question of finding a republican to throw up on... they don't live in MY neighborhood.

They're on the other side of the tracks.

SP4: No, I haven't noticed!Mar 11th, 2008 - 13:50:34

What I have noticed is that when a democrat commits a crime, the number of dems who come to his rescue. An Idaho Senator rubs someone's shoes in a restroom, apparently a serious crime in Minnesota and dems ask for his head.

Ted Kennedy killed a woman and never a peep.

One other thing, the real crime here wasn't Prostitution, it was using public funds to pay for it.

Try coming to the rescue on that!

Spitzer must've pissed off all the money in New York. It was his bank that tipped off the FBI. They are filing on him under the Mann Act and they are filing on him for money laundering. This, of course, is in addition to the stuff they file on an average John. He's gonna have long, long bad day.

SP4: Did he Break any laws?Mar 12th, 2008 - 01:07:06

Seriously, the question is: did he pay for it with public funds? That's the word...

This guy's a world class assshole, who abused the law, to further his career. He deserve whatever he gets.

Have you heard the dems????

They're calling it a 'tragedy'. Since when is getting laid by a $5000/night hooker a 'tragedy'? Losing a child is a tragedy.

When it's a democrat, it's a tragedy. Reme0ber Larry Craig? Remember he felt up a persons foot, presumably a serious crime, in Minnesota???

They called for his resignation.

Where are the calls for this abuser of the law's resignation?

What is wrong?Mar 12th, 2008 - 03:20:37

To visit another woman is wrong? But how many people don't? How many women change their so many husbands? Prostitutes are women / men, that sell their bodies for a cash, and other men/women sell themselves for different things, from a dinner to movie to bottle of rare wine and one can keep counting. Nobody goes into prostituition for the fun of it. In india/far east they are called sex workers and have their unions too. Elliot Sp is doing good job as governor. Was he elected for ethics? NO so let us take easy on another person's personal preferences.

HAVING SAID THAT I FEEL SORRY FOR AND SYMPATHISE WITH HIS FAMILY, THEY ARE GOING THROUGH A TOUGH TIME!

From a Civil Libertarian's point of view, this guy was George Bush on steroids. The only real difference between Spitzer and Bush is that Spitzer chose a different route to the White House.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eliot_Spitzer

If you are going to ride around in political circles as a Dudley Doright, you had better be a real live Dudley Doright. If you aren't the Simon Bar-Sinisters will feed you to the crocodiles and make themselves look good while doing it.

There is a long list of charges being brought against this stupid sod and he earned most of them.

SP4: Well, Tonny...Mar 12th, 2008 - 14:42:44

Go research this guy and report back to us.

He went after Hank Greenburg and tried to destroy him. Now Hank may be guilty of something, but cheating the public wasn't it. It's easy to get a jury to put people, who make a lot of money, in jail for some obtuse reading of financial laws, or the old standby i.e. obstruction, and good for a career.

But now, it's the Governor who broke the law. Since you are not an American, I don't expect you to understand the American heritige of the political prosecutor and how, in case after case, they are far dirtier than the people they try.

In my home town, the DA was caught in a photo taking an envelope from a Longshoremen's Representative. He became Mayor, AFTER the photo was released!

It's always the same...these guys always think they are above the law. He's glad he's not coming to my courtroom.
