Detroit mayor, lover, charged with lying about extramarital affair

Washington - A prosecutor Monday charged Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff with at least 12 counts of perjury and obstruction of justice in a probe of the firing of a whistle-blowing police official.
The case is the latest sex scandal for a public official in this country. Earlier this month, New York governor Eliot Spitzer was forced to step down after revelations he had paid thousands of dollars an hour for a high-price call girl.
In broadcast remarks, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy read through the dozen charges and said she was determined to see that laws governing the conduct of public employees would be upheld.
Kilpatrick and his one-time chief of staff, Christine Beatty, were charged with trying to cover up their love affair in a trial last year about firing former deputy police chief Gary Brown in 2003.
The Detroit Free Press unearthed the sexually explicit text messages from 2002 and 2003 on Beatty's public pager, triggering the eight-week investigation that lead up to Worthy's charges.
Kilpatrick was also charged with misconduct in office for agreeing to an 8.4 million-dollar settlement with Brown and another former city employee.
After a court awarded the fired deputy police chief 6.5 million dollars in damages, Kilpatrick intended to appeal. But in October, he decided to settle the case with Brown and his former bodyguard Walt Harris for 9 million dollars including legal costs.
The police officer's lawyer apparently pried the settlement out of Kilpatrack through blackmailing him with the incriminating text messages, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Kilpatrick fired Brown in 2003 after he and another of the mayor's bodyguards started asking questions about a wild party at the mayor's mansion which threatened to reveal his relationship with Beatty.
Kilpatrick has defied repeated demands by city council and city unions to step down.
Beatty resigned in late January.

like a zombie. Apologizing isn't going to cut it - like they did something then all of a sudden realized it was wrong!! And Dr. Laura needs a brain transplant, along with another face lift, after remarking that it is usually the wife's fault!!! Those men shouldn't even be able to stand upright or have a penny left to their names if the wives had an ounce of sense!!!!

You may be a very nice person, but taking someone else's problem and going off on a rant like that, as if it were personal, makes you appear to be something else. I, personally, am sick and tired of women screwing around on their husbands but I don't get all uptight and head for the gun locker. Maybe I should have done that with my two ex-wives. I would have saved myself a lot of grief and money. I'd also have gotten a Nobel prize for Humanitarianism.

In particular - one was gay and one spent thousands on prostitutes - both taking a chance on bringing who knows what home to their wives!! But heaven help any woman who would dare criticize the extracurricular activities of a husband!! So - you have TWO ex-wives - interesting!!!

You obviously got it wrong. It is obvious that you cannot understand anything more complex than F*ck you. It was the wives who screwed around, raped the bank account and F*cked off. It was only after being screwed around that I developed my distrust of the hag side of humanity. They are nothing more than a pack of gold-diggers. If you haven't been married yet, then you don't have a damned clue. I sincerely doubt that you have much of a clue about anything. these people make me sick black or white, you are given the opportunity to govern and represent a community and what do you do? You cheat, embezzle and do all manner of dirty dealing, shame on all of you, you do not deserve any forgiveness or chances; put them all in jail, lock them up and throw away the key, they let power go to their head. Anyone running for public office needs to understand that its a 'public' office and most secrets will be outed. Lying to cover them up is stupid. Its too bad that 'public' people have little privacy, but its nothing new.
