Critics snipe at Clinton over her Bosnia "sniper" remarks
Mar 25, 2008, 22:42 GMT
Washington - Hillary Clinton continued to take fire Tuesday over her exaggerated portrayal of the danger of a visit she made to Bosnia in March 1996.
Meanwhile, she took a swipe at Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate who narrowly leads her in the bid for the party's presidential nomination, and his controversial pastor.
Clinton admitted Tuesday to making a mistake when she was trying to convince an audience of her expertise in foreign affairs with the following remark last week: 'I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.'
In fact, there was no sniper fire, and Clinton was received at the airport by a smiling young girl carrying flowers. Those images emerged from video footage resurrected by reporters who remembered covering her trip as first lady during the presidency of her husband, Bill Clinton.
In the footage, Clinton walks casually with her then-teenage daughter Chelsea, waving to the greeting committee.
The Washington Post has given Clinton several Pinocchio points - barbs awarded for candidates when they stretch the truth - for her comments.
Clinton backpedalled Tuesday, saying that she had 'made a mistake in describing it.'
'We were ... very much told by the Secret Service and the military that we were going into a war zone and that we had to be conscious of that,' Clinton told an audience. 'I was the first first lady taken into a war zone since Eleanor Roosevelt (during World War II).'
Neither Obama, who is on holiday in the US Virgin Islands, nor his campaign staff have commented on Clinton's controversy.
That hasn't kept Clinton from taking a jab Tuesday at Obama over an issue that has occupied cable TV broadcasters nonstop for days - the long record of fiery anti-white and anti-Hillary remarks from the pulpit by Obama's retired Chicago pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
While Clinton's campaign mostly stayed clear of the explosive issue last week, the senator on Tuesday, when asked what she would have done in such a case, said she would have left the church.
'Given all we have heard and seen, he would not have been my pastor,' Clinton said. 'While we, of course, must protect our right to freedom of expression, it should not be used as a license or an excuse to demean and humiliate our fellow citizens.'
In a major speech last week on race relations, Obama defended the pastor, saying he could no more disown Wright, who has been his spiritual mentor for 20 years, than he could his own white grandmother, who has also made racist remarks that made him cringe.
Clinton aimed a last jab at Obama's argument, saying: 'You know, we don't have a choice when it comes to our relatives. We have a choice when it comes to our pastors and the churches we attend.'
Clinton and Obama next face off on April 22 in Pennsylvania, the most populous remaining state holding intra-party voting before the centre-left Democrats meet in August for their nominating convention in Denver, Colorado.
Republican John McCain has already sewn up his party's nomination.

how Obama stretches the truth whe he says he will give middle income families a tax cut when in fact he will take the cap off social security taxes and raise income taxes for many families who cannot even afford to purchase a home! Or how Obama says he is a uniter when he has been listening to hateful rants his entire adult life.
Every four years the U.S. shows its underpants to the world by bending over and cutting a big fart. Can we please, just once, have a good choice? Not a socialist/lawyer, a drunk/born again, a 100 year war/armageddon candidate. Nor an eco-fake or a 1/2 descendent of slaves with a whole bunch of baggage. Just a simple candidate with a simple objective: balance the budget, erase the debt and let people take care of their own stupidity and suffer for their own ignorance instead of wiping them off the face of the earth, covering them with milk and honey welfare or buying them with subsidies and bailouts. Gee, why is it so hard for these moneyholics to balance a damn check book? and will no one stand up that can simply talk some common sense, or must we suffer with a bankrupt system (in more ways than one) time and time again.
So, you can't really remember if you were shot at or not? And you want to lead the western world?
Ironically, here’s PROOF HILLARY WAS IN DANGER IN KOSOVO. I guess reporters don't search their own archives.
This CNN report from 1999 covered Hillary in Kosovo---AFTER they left Sinbad and USO members, Hillary and her military escort flew via Black Hawk to the front lines.
• CNN reported: At a second outpost, Camp Bedrock, Mrs. Clinton visited a M.A.S.H. unit, the only full-service U.S. Army hospital in Bosnia. The three-hour tour of the front lines of the international peacekeeping mission were filled with the gritty reality of a military operation, a far cry from traditional first lady photo opportunities, and Mrs. Clinton seemed more than comfortable with that. [CNN, 3/25/99]
•
A day later, the Charleston Gazette 3/26/99 reported that, 'Protected by sharpshooters, Hillary Rodham Clinton swooped into a military zone by Black Hawk helicopter Monday. This trip to Bosnia marks the first time since Roosevelt that a first lady has voyaged into a potential combat zone'
First lady 'horrified' at Serb attacks on Kosovo, Milosevic's 'manipulation' of truth
By Candy Crowley/CNN
March 31, 1999
MARRAKECH, Morocco (March 31) -- First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday that she was horrified at Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's manipulation of the truth in defending Serb attacks on Kosovar Albanians.
'I've seen, as many people have, the pictures and heard the stories, the television and in the news, and I'm just horrified by what I have seen, but I am particularly horrified by the use of propaganda and the manipulation of the truth and the revision of history that the Serbian government is engaged in right now,' Clinton told reporters travelling with her in Northern Africa.
The first lady came to the region for 12-day tour, in part, to promote health care, education, and economic opportunities for women. But she said she could not speak out on issues like tolerance without addressing the current crisis in Kosovo.
Mrs. Clinton voiced strong support for NATO action and said the Serbian 'atrocities' could not go unchecked.
'I don't want there to be any mistake in anyone's mind, whether they be in Europe or Africa, the Middle East or the United States, that what we are seeing is the result of a cold, calculated strategy,' said Clinton. 'We saw it in Bosnia, we now see it in Kosovo. And we have learned that we cannot stand by and let such atrocities go on unchecked with impunity.'
'In the end, we know what happens when people like Milosevic are given a free hand, or permitted to abuse people to the extent he has on many occasions in the last years,' she said.
The first lady has been in close contact with her husband, President Bill Clinton, since the NATO airstrikes on Serbian targets began. It was the second day in a row that she took Milosevic to task.
Mrs. Clinton said similar remarks she made Tuesday were aimed at making it clear that 'the United States and its NATO allies have taken this action because they felt they had no alternative ...' as Serb troops massed for the offensive.
She stressed that the Yugoslav air attacks were not something that the United States and its allies sought.
'But they have felt compelled on humanitarian terms to try to bring an end to a behavior that precipitated the crisis in Bosnia, and it is now driving hundreds of thousands of Kosovars across the borders into their neighboring countries,' the first lady said.
Marrakech is the last stop on Mrs. Clinton's Africa tour. She has been accompanied by her daughter Chelsea.
I'm just tired of all of this. Honestly, I think it was a mistake and she was speaking of some other place...probably. But, the way she tries to defend herself, come one, who do you take us for. You know...I've stopped watching the news, and I'm about to stop flagging the news on the internet. It's ridiculous. I'm embarrassed for this country. I'm embarrassed to wake up every morning and turn the channel to Fox or MSNBC or CNN or NBC, CBS or ABC...I'm tired of it all. Prove me wrong!
She's got no shame - trying to minimize the fallout, she's lying again! The war was over six months before she landed there - Dayton peace agreement was signed and Bosnia was already four months into the implementation stage. There was no war zone to land in!
'BILLARY' Clinton calls it a mistake. I call it getting caught in a lie. I bet you I'm RIGHT and she CANNOT be trusted!

Does anybody even have a count of how many standards Hillary have?
She has no shame in looking straight in the eye and lying.
She had no anwer but 'I don't recall' when she was being questioned during white water investigation.
She said she will not turn down lobbyist money.
When questioned her Bosian Sniper-fire lie, she said 'so i made a mistate. So what? ha ha ha' (watch the video on reuters if you are not convinced).
...and now she proclaims to be the defender of common working people. She see no shame in lying during the election. If she is elected president, she will drop nuclear bomb on the us citizens and will say, 'I do not recall pushing that button'. Please send home that liar now.
A would-be Commander in Chief doesn't know what taking fire is? If you're being shot at and running through a war zone, you don't forget or misremember that.
What line won't she cross?
The pile on Hillary is almost, though not quite ,enough to make one feel sorry for her.The hit of the day,and the ignoring of Obama's lame explanation of Rev. Hate(Good speech on Race though )is odd.The 'Vast Left Wing Conspiracy'seems to be sick of the Clintons and we still don't know much about Obama.Do we spend Billions of more on taxing the goose that lays an admitively imperfect golden egg,but still golden ,or what? Who pays for Health care and a few more trillion dollar questions,oh,the killer a little thing not even mentined in the got cha game that passes for journalism-Social Security.Has any one asked about that?We hear Hill's convoluted notions of what victory is and Bill's old stump speech type style from Obama, words sound good but===One says experience, but doing what? the other says change to what? Those of us in the provinces of the empire have no clue, and neither do you.Wouldn't it be nice to give the American Peasants some meat every once in a while to go with the same old cold porridge?
'Good speech on Race though'
How is 'Vote for me and I will put an end to trying to make you feel guilty for something someone else did to someone who is long dead' a good speech on race?
It's something you don't forget. It's something people around you don't forget. It's a place you don't take your 16 year old daughter. And if a President is so cowardly to send in his wife and daughter to a place that he doesn't want to or can't go, then that really doesn't say much about us now does it. If I was president and the Secret Service said 'Mr. President we cant let you go cause it's too dangerous.', believe me...I'm not letting my wife and child go. Now if my wife insisted...well then she can go but she is not going to take my daughter. And mind you...I would be the most powerful person on the planet...do you really think someone would deny me the right to keep my child out of harms way...a combat zone...with snipers etc.
Its not a mistake. Its a lie...That's all it is. Not misspoken.
Misspoken is 'I went to Safeway at 10 p.m.' when in actuality I went to Safeway at 11 p.m. Now if someone that went with me said...'It was 11 p.m. then I would consider the argument comedian or not.' More importantly I wouldn't state it 4 times over and I would check my facts if I was running for the highest office in the land.
Plain and simple...its a lie...and if you don't know that then you're lying to yourself.
That's how her husband and his cronies justified dropping tons of bombs on a country.
..and she misspoke again: check out 'Hillary's 'First Since Eleanor in War Zone' Claim Not True- Will MSM Report?' on newsbusters
You are describing Ron Paul.
@everybody else; Hillary is the best of the worst among those left running for president. Get over it.
so many things get blown out of proportion, people pick apart every thing someone utters out of their mouth.I bet every day everyone has said something that can be picked to pieces.Good grief these are just people and we all make mistakes that is normal. There is no one that is perfect
and you can see that in all the candidates that we have to choose a president from,They are all human, and made mistakes.
Question: Is this the same Hillary Clinton that used military personnel as so called 'servants' during WhiteHouse dinners and parties??
For shame!!!
'You are describing Ron Paul.'
Yeah, a fellow moonbat loser.
could he be describing LOL? Ron Paul has things under control and has demolished the other three with his platform. Vote for one of the last three and you're voting for the same old shit.
'Ron Paul has things under control'
What color is the sky in your little world?
...no sh-t! Talk about a tinfoil hat....Ron Paul attracts em like a charged coil.
A vote for McCain is a vote for Bushie - just don't think otherwise.
And as far as Hillary's comments - words are cheap either way. No one is going to get into office and fix immediately what has gone wrong the last two terms. The press is too busy jumping on every little word uttered and making a mountain out of a molehill, and the opposite party has a field day. Guess that gets our mind and attention off the bungling ADD White House resident if nothing else!
She was supporting the troops for 10 years, I like the footage a lot on mute--
Retarded media has nothing to ad because they are on Oilbama's payroll.
But look at the faces of the troops---they love that she flew in to visit even if all they could afford was a 2 bit hack traitor comic.
She still came. If you've ever served anywhere you know how much that means.
Obama went overseas and starts a Civil War in Kenya (last year, as a Senator) by campaigning for his radical Islamic cousin Odinga who was trying to bring Sharia law to Kenya. When the cousin lost, he started a tribal war. When? This February.
You have to start reading this stuff. The press wouldn't touch it because they're afraid to talk about the fact that Obama does have ties to radical Islam.
But there is a Yahoo Business News article called 'Obama's Church' and go to Larry's Johnson's Page No Quarter 'Obama's African Hubris' and you'll get a load of shocking information.
We now know. Obama's Reverend Wright is every bit as radical as people said. And so is Obama.
