American Airlines cancels 200 flights to conduct safety inspections

Washington - US carrier American Airlines on Wednesday said it had cancelled 200 flights to inspect aircraft that may not have been in compliance with safety regulations, after US aviation authorities last week said they would inspect the maintenance records of all domestic airlines.
American Airlines said a joint audit with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had 'raised questions' over whether its fleet of MD-80 aircraft complied with one of the agency's directives on wiring.
The airline said its planes were re-entering service throughout the day as inspections that ensured the wiring was installed and secured were completed.
The FAA began the audits last week after fining low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines a record 10.2 million dollars for failing to comply with safety regulations on its Boeing 737 aircraft.

I know how audits work, you have plenty of warning that they're on their way. They don't just 'spring it on you' They knew this was going to happen, why did they pretend it was a last minute thing?
