United becomes latest US airline to ground planes in safety probe
Apr 2, 2008, 22:32 GMT
Washington - US carrier United Airlines grounded 52 planes Wednesday after discovering it had failed to conduct mandatory safety inspections amid an industrywide probe by aviation authorities.
United said it had grounded all of its Boeing 777 fleet after an internal review found it had not conducted regular fire system inspections required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA last month launched an audit of all US airlines after fining low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines a record 10.2 million dollars for failing to comply with safety regulations on its Boeing 737 aircraft.
American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have both been forced to cancel flights in the past week to undergo similar inspections.
