Washington - Barack Obama claimed a significant win in North Carolina while rival Hillary Clinton took a razor-thin victory Tuesday in Indiana, as the state-by-state Democratic presidential nominating battle enters its final month.

Obama emerged victorious in the Southern state of North Carolina by 56 per cent to 42 per cent and added to his small but steady lead in delegates to the party's August nominating convention.

The Illinois senator told supporters in North Carolina that he was close to securing the party's nod for the November general election, but Clinton vowed to fight until the last primary on June 3.

Clinton won Indiana by 51 per cent to 49 per cent, a difference of about 20,000 votes out of 1.25 million. The final tally was reported about seven hours after polls closed in the Midwestern state.

'Not too long ago, my opponent made a prediction,' the former first lady said of Obama at a rally in Indianapolis, Indiana. 'He said I would win Pennsylvania (which voted April 22), he would win North Carolina, and Indiana would be the tiebreaker.'

'Well, tonight we've come from behind. We've broken the tie, and thanks to you it's full speed on to the White House,' Clinton said, making a plea to supporters for campaign donations in order to keep up with the spending of her rival.

A split decision by voters had been widely predicted from the two largest states left in the Democratic nomination battle. Only six contests now remain, concluding on June 3.

Obama, 46, insisted that the Democratic Party would reunite behind the eventual nominee, despite a gruelling campaign that had left 'bruised feelings' on both sides and given presumptive Republican nominee John McCain a head start.

'Many of the pundits have suggested that this party is unalterably divided. I am here tonight to tell you that I don't believe it,' said Obama in North Carolina's capital Raleigh. 'We will be united in November.'

McCain wrapped up his party's nomination in March.

Amid the drawn out intra-party race, Democratic leaders have voiced hopes to have their own clear nominee by late June.

In the quest for the 2,025 delegates needed to capture the Democratic nomination, Obama led by 1,743 to 1,606 for Clinton before Tuesday's result, according to a count by website realclearpolitics.com. North Carolina had 115 and Indiana 72 delegates up for grabs.

With only 200 delegates left in the six electoral contests remaining after Tuesday, both campaigns have turned to persuading nearly 300 undecided super-delegates - Democratic elected officials and party leaders - who could still potentially swing the nomination in either candidate's favour.

Obama told supporters that his complete victory was close.

'Tonight we stand less than 200 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination for president of the United States,' he said.

Both sides had played down expectations of landing a knock-out blow in Tuesday's primaries, though Obama's apparent double-digit win in North Carolina was wider than most pre-election surveys had predicted.

'There are those who were saying that North Carolina would be a game-changer in this election. But today what North Carolina decided is that the only game that needs changing is the one in Washington,' Obama said.

African-Americans, who made up more than 30 per cent of Democratic voters in North Carolina, chose Obama by more than 90 per cent, according to exit polls reported by broadcaster CNN. White voters picked Clinton by a margin of 59 per cent to 36 per cent.

Clinton, 60, had been favoured to win narrowly in Indiana, which has a large population of working-class white voters that lean towards the New York senator.

Obama's likely votes were concentrated in urban centres with large African-American communities and in northern Indiana, which borders his home state of Illinois.

The high cost of petrol and a wider economic slowdown in the United States had dominated much of the discussion as Obama and Clinton crisscrossed the states in the final days.

Exit polls from CNN showed that Clinton beat Obama by 53-46 per cent among Indiana voters who said they were affected by a recession in the US economy.

macho men out there who would NEVER vote for a woman better think again. Of the three remaining, Clinton can 'get'er done'. The other two will just make things worse for the next four years. I used to say 'anybody' would be better than Bush. I was wrong; McCain wouldn't be better nor would Obama.

Most of us do not object to an African American either, just THE African-American...and I'm stretching to call him a real American here, in question.

Anyone who seems to think John McCain has a shortcoming, or two, is ignoring his resume' which the other two candidates can never match, even if they were put TOGETHER.

Many of the superdelegates who could well decide the Democratic presidential nominee have already been plied with campaign contributions by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, a new study shows.

'While it would be unseemly for the candidates to hand out thousands of dollars to primary voters, or to the delegates pledged to represent the will of those voters, elected officials serving as superdelegates have received about $890,000 from Obama and Clinton in the form of campaign contributions over the last three years,' the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics reported today.

About half the 800 superdelegates -- elected officials, party leaders, and others -- have committed to either Clinton or Obama, though they can change their minds until the convention.

Obama's political action committee has doled out more than $694,000 to superdelegates since 2005, the study found, and of the 81 who had announced their support for Obama, 34 had received donations totaling $228,000.

Clinton's political action committee has distributed about $195,000 to superdelegates, and only 13 of the 109 who had announced for her have received money, totaling about $95,000.

DANGER !May 8th, 2008 - 14:04:12

Now that the Dems have chosen two school weeds as potential Presidential candidates to protect America, the entire US is placed in extreme danger.

I ask each one of you - if YOU had to leave your home and all your valuables and priceless possessions behind with the front door left wide open, WHAT WOULD YOU prefer ? To have a LION in front of it with frightening aggression, huge teeth, a fatal bite and roars of anger, OR put DONALD DUCK there to Quack and flap his feathers about ?

I guess I know the answer. THEN why do you want to put ineffectual weak kneed crap in front of your precious country America's`s door ?

Why leave your nation helpless at the mercy of every fanatical terrorist that the world can throw at you ? They CAN do it and HAVE DONE - try to find your beloved Twin Towers - THEY HAVE GONE - Alles Kaput - PUFF - GONE !

And all it took was a few dedicated fanatics with a couple of aeroplanes.

Then BANG, your Towers were gone together with nearly 3,000 American dead and 8,000 crippled or infected by dust inhalation. This does not include the Pentagon, your mighty military shrine of worship - they even got THAT ! With even more dead and crippled.

Put your playground squabbles of Dems versus Reps aside for the sake of America and vote McCain into the White House. He will at least have the guts and determination to give any intruder a bloody nose and will certainly not quack and flap his feathers around aimlessly.

This will at least ensure that America can react viciously against any aggressor under a strong leader for the next 4-5 years and give your simple minded Democratic idiots the chance to select some proper candidates for the next election. candidates with leadership qualities, not just any bum from a supermarket queue.

VOTE FOR McCAIN !!!!!!!!

He is OK, no need for any nasty comments about the poor guy. He actually says an immense load of sensible dialogue. It can be construed as bordering on educational. I suppose it depends just when he takes his pills and gives the Jack Daniel`s the old Tennessee fire water a rest.

Tonni from Belgium - I bet he don`t even know where Belgium is - says SP4 has TWO degrees ! Well, one would only throw a fit guessing what subjects these two bits of toilet paper covered. It just CANNOT be SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, PHYSICS or MATHEMATICS

I can only say that if he REALLY has these monumental academic qualifications, then it must be as easy to get a degree in America as tripping up a kerb and dropping your beloved McDonald`s burger in the gutter. Try getting a degree in Europe SP4, it`s very hard work and tests intellectual ability to the limit.

Anyway, leave the guy alone you lot of vultures, he means no harm and it gives the rest of us a giggle and something to write about in reply.

If SP4 never existed, Tonni from Belgium would have to retire.

Being called a moron by someone who can't spell 'hypocrisy'? It is amusing.

'Do you think (somehow I doubt it) that you can give an intelligent position without the polemics? '

Polemic or not, you have yet to refute or even address it; just whine that it was written in the first place. Why should I alter my posting style for someone who can't keep up? Seriously, we have been over this before; refute the argument and maybe you will be taken seriously. Heck, ADDRESS the argument and maybe you will be taken seriously. (I did say 'maybe'.)

Here, let's try it again, I wrote:

---------------------------------------------------------

''Elected officials serving as superdelegates have received about $890,000 from Obama and Clinton in the form of campaign contributions over the last three years,' the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics reported today....

Obama's political action committee has doled out more than $694,000 to superdelegates since 2005, the study found, and of the 81 who had announced their support for Obama, 34 had received donations totaling $228,000.''

--------------------------------------------------------
Now... Is that a good thing? Is that inherently undemocratic, as I have asserted? Are you getting the kind of headache that someone gets from eating ice cream too fast because you might have to actually think in order to reply? Do you like the fact that your candidate is making a mockery of the democratic process?

See? No Polemic. Now you are free to persuade me that this is all well and good and perfectly in keeping with the spirit and the letter of the constitution or to be clown yourself yet again complaining that I wrote something that you disagree with but cannot refute.

Give it a try. 'Me likey Obama obama, he do good and this not badness' or 'Democracy isn't cool anymore and all the hip kids are doing fascism relabeled as socialism' might be a good way to start. Calling me an 'A-hole' is just infantile and, well, does nothing to give your argument any credence.

Russian and Chinese doners - China got MFN staatus by the Clinton admin, after making donations to the DNC

Mexican Business - gave generously to the DNC after Nafta was passed

Boeing, Amoco, numerous investment firms - after numerous contracts and legislation was passed by the Clintons

Mrs. Marc Rich - $1 million to the DNC after he was pardoned by Clinton for something that was no longer a crime.

The always Mysterious Mr. Hsu - Bundles with no apparant source...I wonder where they came from????

Overseas donations to the Clinton foundation after Hillary's votes on various issues realted to those countries.

Abridged:

Hillary, Barack, want my vote? Just $20 million, please

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - What will it take for a Democratic presidential candidate to win the support of California superdelegate Steven Ybarra?

Say, $20 million.

The Democratic National Committee member doesn't parse his words when it comes to what he wants from Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton - an ironclad promise to spend that heady amount to register Mexican-American voters and get them to the polls in November.

In a telephone interview Wednesday, he said he plans to remain undecided in the tight contest until 'someone shows me the money.'

When will he settle on a candidate?

'Nobody showed me any money yet,' he said.

He's not kidding. To Ybarra, a Sacramento lawyer, the stakes are no less than winning the presidency in November.

He predicted that as many as 1.3 million Mexican-Americans could be added to voter rolls in New Mexico, Colorado, Florida and other swing states, a potentially decisive edge for the eventual Democratic nominee.

With that investment of funds, Mexican-Americans would realize Democratic leaders 'care about us,' Ybarra said, referring to Mexican-Americans.

Curious...afterwards, her husbands administration is accused of taking Chinese campaign funds...then, magically, China gets MFN status....then, after numerous foreign donations to the DNC, Clinton ramrods NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and every other free trade agreement through...?

Then, recently, Hillary is caught red-handed with the intrepid Mr. Penn pimping a TRADE deal to Columbia! Golly, Tonny, wasn't SHE the one talling everyone she objected to the free trade agreements??? A neat trick after her husband passed EVERY one!

Now ask yourself...whay is a trade deal with Columbia so important? Why would the chief strategist for BOTH Bill and Hillary be doing this?

Answer: Influence peddling. It's the only answer. She is on reocrd objecting to it but her man bitch is PIMPING it behind closed doors! Well, Sandy must have been busy...

Recently the Clinton Foundation has come under scrutiny for donations by governments and corporations before and after legislation, that Hillary voted on, was passed.

Now, far be it for me to cast doubts, but after:

FBI records scandal

Sandy Berg(l)ar pimping influence to AMOCO

Enron Donations to the DNC

Marc Rich Pardon after a $1 million donation to the DNC

I think we can all add two-and-two.

I think even the dems are tiring of this woman. More and more of them do NOT want to see her in the Oval Office. Obama now has numerical superiority in BOTH dlegates and Super Delegates.

For the record,I'm not confused by your electoral system .But there is realy only one democratical system,a very simple one :one man ,one vote .Then there is no need for this pre-electoral circus .I'm not sure but a possible side effect could be that the whole event would focus more o programs and less on character assasinaion .I've never notices a system or a country where the issues of elections drifterd so far from the intented goals of democracy, namely giving you choice between tendencies ,ideologies, programs, promises for a better future .Somehow many of you are convinced that dscussing personalities is the pinnacel of democracy .As if one is a better man or woman by pertaining to one single party .Is any republican realy believing that per definition a candidate that is belonging to the democratical partys is a crook as such?Or vice-versa ?I's even worse when one uses smear instead of rational thinking in an effort to convince the voters of one's point of view .Just one exampleto ellustrate that;SP4 always uses Mr Hsu in a vain affort to convince anybody that Clinto is in the pocket of the Chinese Government, insinuating even further that voting for her is simply handing over your country to some obscure Chinese lobby .Except for smear this indicates the usual paranoia .Suppose for a minute ilegal campaign contributions were recieved by Clinton, certainly a possibility .First of all I' d look into the mechanisms that make such donations possible, also what can be the results,I'm ask myself if it was possible for a candidate to find out if all contributions are bona fide.It implies that staffing of campaign contributions would rise perhaps tenfold, every person contributing would have to be scrutinized, his assets, bank accounts, rminal records, bussiness deals, family history, ducation, etc, etc would have to be examined and repertoriated .In fact every contribution would have to be treated by the candidate as a major criminal invetigation .What kind of time would that leave them ot busy themselves with the campaign ,their programs ?None at all of course, unless the delegate large parts of all activities associated with a presidential campaign to their staff, right ?Ten would you even consider giving that staff the powers to conduct a criminal inverstigation on the contributors .The first to oppose would be the republicans .Imagine for a second that anybody could investigate the bank account of such fine gentleman as the oil lobby,or the executives from Enron? That woyld perhaps be a great deal of fun in my eyes, but I'll bet you that the same people accusing Clinton of badlydealing with Hsu would raise a storm of protests if the top notch of corporate business was to be investigated every time they made a donation .
Only solution is to give all candidates similar access to the media, similar resources,no more corporate influence,no more ruling of your country by K-street lobbyists,no more handing out your administration to corporate businees, only interested in getting their own interests fulfilled .Wouldn't it be simpl?Just needed are equal media access, equal campaign funds and the chances are that more efforts would be made in explaining programs and debating important issues like measures to be taken to solve the enrgy crisis, the climate change issue, the problems of health care, international terrorism. As it stands now it appears the majority of americans thinks it is incorrectly informed, incompletely informed to say the leqt.Honestly ,that shows even in the comments made here on this site.

Another set of pearls from swine. Honestly, I think I'm finally having an effect on you. Your point is well considered as to lobbyists. Should they have restrictions? If so, what kind?

How do you restrict access to government without hurting the citizens right to petition their government?

Now Hillary and Mr. Hsu, a convicted criminal, is just one little chapter in a litany of pecadillos the Clintons are famous for, never mind the list I rachet off, just in case you forget, which I'm sure you want to, desparately.

But restrict access to government?

No thanks. I'd rather let every lobbyist from the worst kind of groups have access than do that. Who decides? Who polices it? Who gets to play God?

We did ythis with the Federal Election Commission and now Harry Reid is slacking off appointing the memebers so they will be denied a quorum, which is holding back John McCain's federal funds he's entitled to, by law.

How's that for your public trust? Pure libnazi.

No, it is good we expose Harry Reid, and Hillary and her FBI record scandal, Her White Water, her greasy commodity trades, etc., etc.

You do love to pretend that you are 'educated' and toss out your supercilious psyco-babble but you come across as a prejudiced moron who doesn't know the first thing about the United States.

'Then there is no need for this pre-electoral circus .'

We do not want a parliament.

'I'm not sure but a possible side effect could be that the whole event would focus more o programs and less on character assasinaion'

All the information is available to the voters. Some people chose because of 'programs' some people chose because of 'character' and most take both in to account.

'.Somehow many of you are convinced that dscussing personalities is the pinnacel of democracy '

That certainly is not all that has been discussed. Your ignorance is truly incredible. However, once again: Character is an element of what people look for in electing a politician. You think you are sophisticated for ignoring it, I think you are an idiot for doing so.

'.Is any republican realy believing that per definition a candidate that is belonging to the democratical partys is a crook as such?'

Not by 'definition', no. You seem to believe the reverse is true. Republicans are fascist, warmongering, bible thumping creationists. You might want to examine your own stupid prejudices before you whine that others may have them.

'I's even worse when one uses smear instead of rational thinking in an effort to convince the voters of one's point of view'

So by 'smear' you mean something that is untrue or incorrect, right? Have you ever done that here? You have indeed. You work on a list of assumptions that are just flat out wrong, borne of reading the leftist tracts that masquerade as newspapers over there.

'Just one exampleto ellustrate that;SP4 always uses Mr Hsu in a vain affort to convince anybody that Clinto is in the pocket of the Chinese Government,'

'Mr Hsu' is a legitimate point of discussion. Foreign governments influencing US elections are a big issue here. Look at the Chinese human rights record, look what they are doing in Tibet, the Sudan and over Taiwan. The Clintons have given them a free pass on all of that by allowing trade policy to be divorced from pressure for human rights.

'Suppose for a minute ilegal campaign contributions were recieved by Clinton,'

There is no supposing involved, it is well documented.

'In fact every contribution would have to be treated by the candidate as a major criminal invetigation'

Nice leap in logic.

'Only solution is to give all candidates similar access to the media, similar resources,'

Once again, you arrive at your solution for everything: Socialism. We do not want it here. It doesn't work.

'Wouldn't it be simpl?Just needed are equal media access, equal campaign funds '

Well, McCain proposed holding the election using government money. Obama agreed... until he started raising lots of money. Now he has gone back on his word.

'As it stands now it appears the majority of americans thinks it is incorrectly informed, incompletely informed to say the leqt.'

You are a laughable pompous ass. You have no idea what you are talking about yet you presume to lecture us about what we see with our own eyes every day.

'Honestly ,that shows even in the comments made here on this site.'

Go back to your little on line socialist echo-chambers then.
