Washington - Senator Hillary Clinton claimed victory in the Democratic Party's West Virginia presidential primary late Tuesday at a televised rally following the close of polls.

'I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance ... to be heard,' Clinton said, pumping her supporters for more money to keep her campaign alive.

With 97 per cent of polling stations reporting, the former first lady had 67 per cent of the vote compared to 26 per cent for rival Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

Clinton's victory speech was upbeat and conciliatory, and she commended rival Democratic candidate Barak Obama.

'I believe that this campaign has been good for the Democratic Party and good for our country,' Clinton said. 'People are discussing and debating issues. They are turning out in record numbers to register and to vote. There is an excitement about politics that is the lifeblood of our democracy.'

Major television networks had projected a Clinton victory immediately after voting stations closed Tuesday evening.

Clinton closely trails Obama in delegates won for the Democratic presidential nominating convention in August. Despite the narrow margin, her campaign has been declared all but hopeless by most of the national media, with only a handful of small states yet to vote in the intra-party contest.

Clinton argued Tuesday night that the contested primary states of Florida and Michigan should see their votes counted. The states voted in January, too early under national party rules, leading to the loss of their convention delegates.

'Some said our campaign was over after Iowa, but then we won New Hampshire. Then we had big victories on Super Tuesday and in Ohio and Texas and Pennsylvania. And, of course, we came from behind to win in Indiana,' Clinton reminded primary voters.

'So, this race isn't over yet. Neither of us has the total delegates it takes to win. And both Senator Obama and I believe that the delegates from Florida and Michigan should be seated.'

At this point, neither candidate appears likely in state-by-state contests to squeeze the 2,025 delegates for the nominating majority needed to win, so the fate of the race is in the hands of the so- called super delegates, a group of 795 party elite who possess votes independent of the state primaries.

Obama has built a slight edge of 12 in the super-delegate count, with about 244 of the 800 still undeclared. Clinton hopes that strong showings in the final primaries will persuade super-delegates to line up behind her and tilt the race in her favour.

But a move by the super-delegates to swing the nomination to Clinton could further split the party and make it more difficult to unite after a drawn out campaign that has prompted some voters in Democratic primaries to vow they will vote for presumptive Republican Party nominee John McCain if their candidate is denied the nomination.

Many analysts say that Clinton has little chance to convince the super-delegates who lead the centre-left party to use their votes to deny Obama the nomination despite his edge in elected delegates and the total intra-party popular vote.

Clinton's campaign was banking on the strong win in West Virginia - a small but important swing state in the general election - to revive her fortunes and convince party leaders that the New York senator is best positioned to forge a broad coalition of voters for the November 4 presidential vote.

Only 28 delegates are up for grabs in West Virginia. Without the inclusion of Florida and Michigan, no realistic scenario exists for Clinton to catch Obama in pledged delegates awarded by voters.

Hillary and Obama together!!!! We need to keep the old guy with the Bush tendencies OUT, and that would be a sure fire way to do it. Besides, with his temper, we wouldn't want him anywhere near the red button!!

The only President to ever get close to the 'red button'(no such thing) was a democrat. The only one that ever used nuclear weapons was a democrat.

I guess we can file you're comments under the fact that you are just-a-little-more-than full of crap.

By the way, wasn't it Hillary who, a few weeks ago said she'd 'obliterate' Iran???

ELEMENTARY MY DEAR WATSONMay 14th, 2008 - 20:08:50

All countries have TWO major political parties ; ONE for the MIDDLE to UPPER Classes and INTELLIGENTSIA and ONE for the masses, usually not well off and poorly educated, accounting for a large population segment - commonly known as the WORKING CLASS.

You have seen this all over the world, past and present.

It looks to me as an independent observer outside the arena, that the REPUBLICANS represent the refined, intelligent, affluent and well educated section of the US population and the DEMOCRATS represent the masses or WORKING CLASS.

Nothing wrong in this conformity to all other societies. BUT, it does come down to these two factors ;-

1. The REPUBLICANS are not political robots who follow blindly what their leaders say. They have the mental and educated ability to absorb and analyse what is being said, then make a personal rational decision and vote, even switching allegiance if necessary.

2. The DEMOCRATS are political robots who believe whatever their leaders tell them, then blindly follow like Lemmings regardless of all considerations or consequences, just like workers do everywhere. Jump over the cliff and to hell with it ; GERONIMO !

McCain has an impeccable pedigree for any All-American hero and certainly has the looks and composure to go with it.

Obama has nothing, no pedigree, no sense, no intelligence - in fact he is NOT even a REAL AMERICAN. A typical ordinary un-American character who would perfectly fit into the grotty environment of a Flea Market crowd.

Ms.Clinton on the other hand DOES look extremely dignified and presentable, rather like a well dressed dinner lady. Looks OK, the rest is rubbish.

So there you have it America. As `Umphry said ' PLAY IT AGAIN SAM '.

HELLO TONNY FROM BELGIUMMay 15th, 2008 - 08:48:17

I concede my little Belgium Bun.

My French is as bad as your constant dribble on US politics, which is also all wrong.

But my friend, I KNOW why you are and have been excessively active on this network over the past months.

Not having the exposure to English or American people in Belgium, you are using M&C as a self educational facility to improve your English. You are no more interested in their politics than Goofy.

By antagonising the Americans with your provocative crap on their political acrobatics, you get the responses you want in order to raise your level of competence in the English language - you are simply using them as pen-friends.

The more you provoke, the better it is, because in general their replies are rather long and complex, hence you have a greater English text to swat up on.

Adios

OK, so my French is as bad as your incessant crap about US political acrobatics.

BUT, my little Belgian Bun or should I say Bum, I know exactly why you have plagued the M&C site for many months, taking the piss out of the Americans.

Not having any exposure to English or American people in Belgium, you are using this facility as a self-educational means of improving your English, a kind of never-ending multiple pen-friend course of conversational English.

The more you can get up their noses, the better is the tuition in English. It is almost like being there. It does`nt matter what you say as long as you say something and the more irritating it is, the more conversational, colloquial and rewarding is the reply.

What a fake !

With 80%+ of the US states dominated by the Republicans, it all seems a futile waste of time.

The Democrats are left to squabble like vultures over a few irrelevant scraps, trying to scavenge a Presidential candidate out of two bits of dead meat. What a dog fight over nothing.

McCain is just biding his time until he can move into the White House. It`s an embarrassing formality, the guy must be totally frigged off having to endure this boring circus act.
