US acknowledges mistake of not inviting 9/11 families to trials

Jun 5, 2008, 6:01 GMT

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - The US military expressed regret over failing to include the families of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to the tribunals of five key suspects set to get underway Thursday.

'That was a mistake. We'll make sure that doesn't happen again,' said Brigadier General Thomas Hartmann, the top legal advisor to the military commissions at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Pentagon invited the sister of one of the airline pilots killed in the attacks, but when other families complained they had been left out, the pilot's sibling elected not to participate.

The arraignment of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the attacks, and four co-defendants is set to begin the court case of the most notorious suspects to go on trial so far in the military commissions.

The five men will hear the charges against them, but opening arguments will not take place until September at the earliest. Hartmann said the Pentagon intends to establish a closed-circuit live television feed by then for families who wish to watch the proceedings.

Right Tonny - next time they should rent out a major sports stadium for the hearings, and invite everyone who lost someone in the 9/11 attacks.

That makes sense.

Have you been right/sensible about anything Tonny? You didn't respond on other thread when I busted your lie about Bush not mentioning freedom/democracy as part of initial agenda.

I can understand why victims/family might want to be at the trials to 'face' the people who murdered their loved ones. Its very common in most judicial systems where interested parties are allowed and encouraged to witness the proceedings.

I just don't see how it could be practically accomplished.

'Everything the US does these days is a MISTAKE.'

Well Tonny:

We jumped to send aid to China when they needed it, eventhough they refused

We sent millions in aid to Myanmar, even though they refused it.

We started an AIDS iniative in Africa, by a President who had no political reason to do so, costing millions, for no other reason than to help his fellow man.

we freed 50 million folks from the yoke of islamic oppression

we got Libya to dismantle it's nuclear program

we have N. Korea dealing

we helped expose a ruthless despot in S. America who was funding terror

we grew our economy and tax receipts for 6 years straight

It's a lot harder to do than to bitch...how about rolling up your sleeves and join the winning team?
