Two killed in Tennessee church shooting, letter found (Roundup)

Jul 28, 2008, 15:49 GMT

Washington - A man who opened fire in the middle of a church service in the US state of Tennessee killed two people and injured seven, police and news reports said.

At a press conference Monday Police Chief Sterling Owen IV said that police found a letter in Adkisson's car where he expressed a 'stated hatred of the liberal movement.'

The gunman was carrying a concealed shotgun Sunday when he entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville and fired several shots before he could be tackled by churchgoers.

One man was killed when he shielded others from a shotgun blast, local news said. A woman died in hospital a few hours after the shooting.

Owen said Adkisson had 76 rounds of ammunition and a 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun, adding that the letter indicated Adkisson expected to be killed by police.

Seven adults but no children were injured. Several victims were in critical condition.

The shooter, identified as Jim D Adkisson, 58, was arrested after the incident, news reports said, adding that he allegedly had no connection to the church. His motive for the shooting remained unknown.

Adkisson is being held on a charge of first degree murder and a one million dollar bond.

Adkisson's arrest warrant describes the shooting as 'premeditated and intentional.'

According to media reports the church is known for advocating women's and gay rights and founding an American Civil Liberties Union chapter.

The shooting happened during a youth performance of the musical Annie Jr, Volunteer TV News said.

'...advocating women's and gay rights and founding an American Civil Liberties Union chapter.'
Oh, Wow! Three very good reasons to kill people.
What a disgusting pile of crap America has become. Just think. This is the type of 'Freedom and Democracy' that Bush wants to bring to the world.

Wow... you are so right! It is Presidents Bush fault for causing this man to shoot up a church. Can you tell the sarcasm. What about all other shootings that have happened in the past. Did you blame Clinton for the postal workers that got shot? No. Did you blame Clinton for Columbine? No. I just cannot wait till Bush is out of the office so people cannot use him as a scapegoat for all issues (I am sure they will somehow still find a way). I didnt hear the same blame about liberals for all the bombings that occured in the 60s promoting 'No War'.

Par for the course for a far-right nut. If you have ever listened these hatemongers, they spend all day spewing vitriol toward those who they blame for ruining theirs lives, their country, their religion.

The worst of these nuts eventually resort to violence. Interestingly, however, to hear the far right tell it, leftist are threatening America.

Let's see...who brought down a federal building, bombed the Olympics, and have now shot up people in a church?

It's a ill fated idea to bring up the Columbine shooting to incriminate Clinton. At least he tried to regulate gun sales only to be opposed by guess who ...the republicans ? So no need to blame Clinton of course .You don't have to thank me for correcting the nonsensical post claiming that,it was all my pleasure.

Good lord, how these comments get so far off the subject of the article at hand makes one wonder about the eroding intelligence of mankind - they can't stick to a simple subject, and have to use gutter language to try to get a point across - yep - real high class, highly educated - not!

As an accute observer of human nature, that you are, I'm sure that you noticed that the vast majority of garbage, misdirection, foul language and trash-talk comes from the Republican'ts. If they get some of it back, then that is absolutely OK, for they are incapable of intelligent discourse. However the best course of action is to simply ignore them. That being said, it is fun to stick it to them and watch them spew.
