Denver police arrest 100 protestors
Aug 26, 2008, 18:18 GMT
Denver, Colorado - After days of low-key protests, 100 demonstrators were arrested by police on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention after refusing requests to disperse, police media officials said Tuesday.
Police said in a statement that a protest crowd of about 300 people had gathered near Civic Center Park near the state capitol building in downtown Denver, and 'many were observed carrying rocks and other items that could be used to threaten public safety.'
Denver police used pepper spray after the protestors 'suddenly rushed a police safety line,' police said.
Those arrested were charged with obstructing streets and disobeying lawful order, officials said.
The Democratic Party's presidential nominating convention opened Monday evening in Denver, Colorado. On Thursday, US Senator Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver an acceptance speech at a football stadium to a crowd of 76,000, becoming the first African-American to win a major-party presidential nomination.
Federal, state and local police are a strong, visible presence throughout Denver, with police dressed in riot gear on many street corners or riding on pickup trucks that rush to possible threat scenes. Horse-mounted troops are also a presence.
In a separate, possibly more serious incident, federal police have arrested three men in connection with what authorities believe could have been a threat against presidential candidate Barack Obama, officials said. More details will be released later Tuesday.
The incident with the protestors occurred about 7:15 pm Monday.
The Civic Center park has been set aside for protestors, but they have kept a relatively low profile so far. The anticipated thousands of demonstrators have not appeared to date.
'In order to protect the public when the crowd surged forward, two officers deployed their pepper spray and one officer used a pepper ball device,' the police statement said.
Pepper balls are similar to a paint ball containing the same material as pepper spray.
Those arrested could post bond or be taken for a first appearnace in Denver County Court, police said.
Police and rescue helicopters have been periodically running practice missions over Denver for weeks in preparation for the convention, and local residents say some of the aircraft have police perched in the open doors with guns at the ready.

Try clarity, Lance
'some of the aircraft have police perched in the open doors with guns at the ready.'
Ready to maim and murder. Tired of war overseas? Bring it home. Get it off the sanitized television and onto the streets. All that is missing is the Ride of the Valkyries blasting through megaphones and Coppola with a film crew.
I wonder what the GOP(Graft Obfuscation Perfidy)convention will look like. Me Lai all over again in all likelyhood.
'
The KKK, which is an American Christian hate organization, and like minded christian people are full of hate and mass murdering temptation.'
The KKK is not a Christian organization you baboon and these people were were leftists who were trashing the place.
Approximately 100 people arrested in Monday night's protests near Civic Center spent the night getting processed through the criminal justice system...
Most of the arrests came after police moved early to control a march by the protest group Unconventional Denver, which had promised to disrupt activities tied to the Democratic National Convention.
Those arrested are still being processed this morning through the temporary processing facility at 3833 Steele St. They are either being released at the Denver County Jail if they post bond, or they are being taken for a first appearance in Denver County Court if they do not post bond, according to a police statement released early today.
'Denver police made limited use of pepper spray Monday night when a protest crowd that had gathered near Civic Center Park refused requests to disperse and suddenly rushed a police safety line about 7:15 p.m.' the statement said.
Police estimated the crowd at 300, although many onlookers and media also were on hand.
Among those arrested, many were observed 'carrying rocks and other items that could be used to threaten public safety,' the police report said. 'In order to protect the public when the crowd surged forward, two officers deployed their pepper spray and one officer used a pepper ball device.'
Hey right wing nutball, thanks for posting exactly what was in the article. People like SP4 may not be able to read but the rest of us can.
What an idiot.
The signs of the protesters I saw all said to stop the war - think they got mixed up on what convention was being held.......
'thanks for posting exactly what was in the article.'
So where does it say that it was The KKK? Or anyone protesting because Obama is a closet Muslim?
' People like SP4 may not be able to read but the rest of us can.'
Do you relate everything in your life to SP4? Pretty pathetic to be hanging on his every word, isn't it? Kind of makes you a creepy stalker who is obsessed with with someone you have never met. You need to get out of your mothers basement more...if you can fit up the stairs at this point.
The idiots behind the riot:
'Welcome to the Recreate 68 website, your virtual activists’ convergence center for the Democratic National Convention of 2008. This website was created for all the grassroots people who are tired of being sold out by the Democratic Party.
R68 agrees with the proposition, POTESTAS IN POPULO, “all power comes from the people.” What stands between the people and power are the party machines. The parties were devised as a means to represent the people. Today they represent nobody, not even party members, but only party bureaucracy. The people have been left without appropriate institutions for their representation. We intend to create those institutions!
Join us in the streets of Denver as we resist a two-party system that allows imperialism and racism to continue unrestrained.'

Yup. The sight of a black man who is, in many people's mind, a closet muslim is certainly going to provoke anger and resentment.
The KKK, which is an American Christian hate organization, and like minded christian people are full of hate and mass murdering temptation.
I would like Obama to become president just so we can either see these myths dispelled, or see american christian hate groups become even more visible. Perhaps they will get so obviously hateful as to kill their own president in addition to mass kill muslims in other nations.
I hope it does not have to come to that in order for fundamental christians to realize how violent they are and appear to be. But, sometimes one has to break an egg to cook an omelet.
