Carter: Obama could change US image in "10 minutes"
Aug 28, 2008, 3:53 GMT
Denver, Colorado - Former president Jimmy Carter said Wednesday that if Barack Obama were elected president, he could improve the US image overseas 'in 10 minutes' with a strong inaugural speech, according to a broadcast interview with Voice of America.
Carter is in the Rocky Mountain state attending the Democratic presidential convention. He put in a cameo appearance along with wife Rosyln before delegates at the Pepsi Center Monday evening, but did not speak.
Obama was formally nominated by delegates Wednesday evening as the centre-left party's presidential candidate. He will face presumptive Republican candidate Senator John McCain, whose nominating convention is next week, in November 4 general elections.
Carter, president from 1977-1981, told VOA that Obama's brief inaugural speech could start correcting perceptions of the United States overseas that have been damaged during eight years of the Republican presidency.
Obama could pledge that as US president the country 'will never torture another prisoner (or) go to war against another country unless our own security is directly threatened,' Carter suggested.
His Carter Center works internationally to promote human rights and health care.
Carter lost his 1980 bid for a second term to Republican Ronald Reagan.
He drew parallels to conditions before his 1976 election and those today: Energy insecurity, rising inflation and dissatisfaction with a Republican administration.
'The difference between me and Obama is that I didn't have any money,' he quipped.

Just being elected will be a strong enough action, as the World awaits getting rid of Bush and his warmongering pals
carter is a fool and the worst president we have ever had. obama reminds me of him a lot.
the worst President??? - We are in the midst of the terms of the worst President this nation has ever known, and, hopefully, he will keep this title - the U.S. can't tolerate/survive another one.
that Reagan was the bottom of the barrel, then along came Bush senior, then Bush light. The repubs have scraped through the bottom of barrel in choosing McCain. They're really digging in the garbage pile.
and amen .they don't get any worse than bush .
but mccain would come in as the second worst.
Now - the only way to go is up - we've already been down!
This message is to you Mr. Carter. You certainly changed America's image in 10 minutes after you were elected and it was not for the good. So far you have been one of the worst if not the worst president in the history of this country. You were terrible.
You socilaists here on this forum, why don't you move to Europe. They were founded on limited freedom and the king (government) rules. This country was not. You will do us all a favor and you will be happier.
The minute Bush/Cheney have left the building, our image will start to change for the better!
Even McCain would be an improvement - I understand he knows how to read!
...all I see is a guy willing to meet with terrorists...
...remember his luddite 13% inflation, 8% unemployment and 20% interest rates?
Carter isn't running for President..........
remember when sp4 was in his right mind.
I'm not old enough - too far in the past!
The Mr. Carter should keep his big peanut shaped mouth shut.

speech will do very little in the real world, and a speech is all obama has. Actions always speak louder, something obama has never had; actions.
