Washington - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain clashed in their first debate Friday night over the war in Iraq and whether the next person to occupy the White House should meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The two candidates disagreed sharply over the future course in Iraq, with Obama pitching his plan to set a timeframe for withdrawing most US combat forces from Iraq. McCain charged that any premature pullout would allow Iraq to slide into chaos and endanger US interests in the region.

'You were wrong,' Obama told McCain, who supported President George W Bush's decision to invade Iraq in March 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein's regime.

McCain sought to emphasize Obama's lack of experience by saying that some of the foreign policies his opponent advocates are 'naive' and 'dangerous.'

'I'm afraid Senator Obama doesn't understand the difference between a tactic and a strategy,' McCain said of the success that has been achieved in Iraq since Bush launched the buildup of US troops there in January 2007.

Obama and McCain held the first of three planned presidential debates at the University of Mississippi ahead of the November 4 election.

It marked the first time voters saw the men on stage together to discuss mostly foreign policy issues, but not until after the candidates outlined their positions on the financial crisis plaguing the US economy and sending shockwaves through global markets.

McCain, 72, was seen as having an advantage over the 47-year-old Obama on foreign policy, while polls show voters favouring Obama on the economy, which has become the top amid this month's Wall Street failures.

Both appeared confident in addressing both topics, and there was no clear-cut winner after the 90-minute exchange.

Obama said it was necessary to engage in dialogue with US foes to find areas of compromise and steadfastly defended his position of being open to meeting with Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be wiped off he map.

'Without preconditions you sit down across the table from someone who has called Israel a stinking corpse,' McCain said. 'This isn't just naive, it's dangerous.'

Both candidates blamed Bush for mismanaging the war following the ousting of Saddam's regime, but McCain touted the success of Bush's troop surge last year in bringing down violence in Iraq and said he had supported the move long before the president endorsed it.

'This strategy has succeeded, and we are winning in Iraq,' McCain said.

'John, you like to pretend that the war started in 2007,' Obama said, noting that more than 4,000 US soldiers have died in the conflict on which the United States has spent nearly 1 trillion dollars.

The debate started with a discussion of the financial crisis and Bush's 700-billion-dollar plan to rescue the troubled financial sector.

'We have to move swiftly, but we have to move wisely,' Obama said.

Both candidates said that they backed Bush's plan - which would be the costliest government intervention into the free market in US history - but revealed little about their differences on the plan that is now being negotiated in Congress.

McCain called for consolidation of regulatory agencies that failed to prevent the current crisis on Wall Street and said that it was vital to 'get spending under control in Washington,' touting his record of opposing wasteful use of tax money and suggesting that a freeze in new spending for most federal programmes would be a good idea.

Obama called the current crisis a 'final verdict' on the eight- year Bush administration and accused McCain of supporting the economic policies of Bush, who has the worst approval ratings of any president in more than 30 years.

The two men also differed over tax policy and the role of the federal government in the economy.

McCain said he would ensure that the US military has the necessary resources to finish off the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, while Obama sought to tie the failure to capture terrorist leader Osama bin Laden to Bush's decision, with the support of McCain, to invade Iraq.

McCain criticized Obama for not taking a tougher stance last month after Russia invaded Georgia in the dispute over the Georgian breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

'He doesn't understand that Russia committed serious aggression against Georgia,' McCain said.

Both candidates reaffirmed their support for allowing Georgia and another former Soviet state, Ukraine, to join the NATO alliance.

'Our entire Russian approach has to be evaluated because a resurgent and very aggressive Russia is a threat to the peace and stability of the region,' Obama said. 'Their actions in Georgia were unacceptable.'

At debate, McCain needles Obama over faux White House seal
(Abridged)

OXFORD, Miss. - It’s the seal that just keeps on giving.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain needled White House rival Barack Obama again on Friday for using a seal earlier in his campaign that mirrored the one used by the U.S. president. The exchange was prompted by ribbing from Obama over McCain’s refusal to commit to a meeting with the prime minister of Spain if he wins the November 4 election. [...]

McCain, who was in the middle of criticizing Obama for being willing to meet with U.S. foes, reacted sharply.

“I’m not going to set the White House visitors schedule before I’m president of the United States,” he said. “I don’t even have a seal yet.”

The Obama seal, which the Illinois senator used at a campaign event in June, had a picture of a bald eagle on it and an inscribed phrase that read “Vero Possumus,” a Latin expression that roughly translates to the campaign’s slogan, “Yes, we can.”

The seal drew some ridicule for being presumptuous and the campaign never used it again.

Bull, Obama interrupted McCain and even the debate moderator. He just wouldn't shut the hell up when it wasn't his turn.

'He was snide and laughing at Obama's remarks. '

Obama is an idiot who deserves to be laughed at, not that McCain did. John McCain had the decency to refer to Barry Hussein as 'Senator Obama'. BO called Senator McCain 'John'.

'Obama seemed much more polished and confident'

If by that you mean he kept grunting 'unnnnh, unnnnh, unnnnh, unnnnh' then yeah... If you mean that he had anything articulate to say... Nope.

Favorite line...McCain

There are advantages to having experience and knowledge.

I think McCain started out so-so on the economic side, then warmed up. He needs work though; for one thing, needs to look at Obama when going after him.

McCain did hammer him on $900m in earmarks and $800b in new spending. Obam couldn't name a single thing to cut, just the obligatory vague promise to cut failed programs. When's the last time he ever voted against pork or offered up a program to cut?

I just wish McCain would have cut Obama off a few times when Obama kept interrupting. Obama acted childish, frankly I thought McCain won the debate handily in the eye of the public. i'm sure the MSM will gloat over how Obama held his own.

McCain Wins Round 1Sep 27th, 2008 - 06:20:39

Posted 9/26/2008 10:21 PM CDT on Des Moines Register (Abridged)

It was one of the most substantive debates in recent presidential campaign history and John McCain won it. The Arizona senator was cool, informed and forceful in Friday’s first presidential debate of the general election campaign.

He repeatedly put Barack Obama on the defensive throughout the 90 minutes session. Obama did little to ease voter concerns that he’s experienced enough to handle foreign and defense policy. That was his number one task Friday night and he failed.

Instead he was often his old meandering self, unable to state a quick, forceful position. Polls taken in the coming days should show McCain holding on to his trump card in the race - the view that he’s better equipped to be commander in chief. [...]

McCain’s victory came at a good time for him in the race. He has fumbled around for a week on questions involving the economy and the federal bailout of Wall Street. His vice presidential candidate has become a running joke of late night comedy shows. As a result, his poll numbers sagged.

The debate came against the backdrop of a close presidential election at a time when the country faces its greatest economic crisis since the 1930s and some of its greatest military threats since World War II. The nation’s adversaries - Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and Taliban terrorists - seem to be on the ascendancy.

It has rattled Americans and between the two, McCain came off as the most reassuring. The crabby, grumbling, hotheaded McCain was nowhere to be seen. Instead we saw a calm, seasoned commander in chief . If you looked at your television and squinted slightly, you could better picture him addressing the country during a time of national crisis than Obama. Obama was often left flashing his smile and shaking his head at McCain.

McCain was expected to win on questions of foreign policy and national defense. That’s been his background. Where he routed Obama was on economic and spending questions as he repeatedly accusing Obama of using earmarks and wanting to spend too much.

When Obama tried his line about how McCain voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, McCain slapped back by ticking off a lit of issues where he has disagreed with Bush - like torture, conduct of the war in Iraq and federal spending and Guantanamo Bay. McCain never got rattled or flustered, he just constantly stayed focused on the attack.

The only good news for Obama is that any pain from this debate is likely to be short-lived....

Does McCain realy has the edge ove Obama in international politics ?
Consider the biggest blunerd Bush made in his eight years of presidency:the response to the WTC bombing:blaming it on Saddam, lying to you all about that, claiming ties between Saddam and Al Quaida,WMD and all the rest. Not one world leader oside the USA believed Bush on his word ,or believed the silly evidence that was fabricated by the neocons to sabotage the work the UN and Hans Blixen were doing in Iraq .Remeber Hans Blixen complaining that apperently the case for the war waz set no matter wht the UN inspections were to reveal in Iraq ?he was right, you now all know (execept the simpleminded SP4 ) that Bush,Cheney,Rumsfeld endthe rest of the neocon plotters ) forged evidence to convince you .So the americans were misled to enter this war .McCain with all his experience swallowed the lies,Obama did not .So who keeps his head cool in circimstances which require careful thinking and wheighing of arguments ?
I do agree that McCain is a honest person however respectable in his choices .He certainly was not part of the plot ,had he known about it ,he probably would have opposed it too ,let us give him the benefit of the doubt .
However in the biggest blunder made by the USA in the last 30 years on the international arena Obama was right and has proven that astute judgment proved to be more accurate than to bow under the tremendous pressure exercised by the neocons and the media during the tragic events that caused this war based on lies .
Remember how those that dared to opose the war plans were labelled traitors and bad patriots in the media ?Remember how even those that should keep their statements objective jumped into the war frenzy and abandonned all restraint to participate in the war ?Obama did not ,he deserves respect for that .
Also I think his understanding of other culturs makes him a better negociator and a more respected leder .McCin carries the weight of his past mistakes regarding Iraq with him .Add to that a poor understanding of the economy and the financial markets and the choice should be clear.

The Bush admin paid a military dictator over $10 billion to provide protection to al qaeda and bin laden instead. Now Al qaeda and the Taliban have created a huge narco-terrorist enclave in Afghanistan and Pakistan. And, now the republicants want to pretend that it doesn't matter. McLame tried to make Obama seem to 'naive and dangerous' because he expressed concern about the treachery of Pakistan since 9/11. McLame also said that it is not good strategy to announce to an enemy that you are going to attack. The little pup called Senator McCain 'John'. John McCain called the little pup 'Senator Obama.' John McCain has served this country in war and peace, almost giving his life for the USA. Obama hasn't served anything other then himself. McCain deserves respect.

' The shadow of Bush was right behind McCain'

Bull. That is the line that you people parrot but it is not the case.,

Yes, teacher, Obama DID show the utmost respect to McCain, and I still say he didn't deserve it during the debate. No one is questioning McCain's military service - it's been shoved down everyone's throats constantly. That doesn't excuse every a**hole remark or action he makes for the rest of his life. He snickered all during the debate like a little boy, and kept getting off the line of questioning to talk about what he wanted. I don't think the moderator did his job very well, although he did attempt to reign McCain in. As far as Obama not calling McCain 'Senator', check out McCain's maverick sidekick's lack of respect in always calling or referring to him as John. But that's a whole other story.

'Yes, teacher, Obama DID show the utmost respect to McCain',

Not addressing by his title as he was addressed = not respectful.

'I still say he didn't deserve it during the debate.'

Well you are an idiot.

'it's been shoved down everyone's throats constantly. '

You don't want to hear it because Obama hasn't served anything... The only thing he has consistently done is help other people to get rich by stealing from the taxpayer. That and attend the damn America church.

'He snickered all during the debate like a little boy,'

Not that he did, but what other reaction could a real man give to the naiive and non answers your genuine little boy was giving. McCain was quite restrained.

' kept getting off the line of questioning to talk about what he wanted. '

And obama kept interrupting everyone like a classless attention whore.

' I don't think the moderator did his job very well,'

Poor fellow couldn't get a word in edgewise between Obamas 'unnnnh, unnnnh, uuuh, unnnh.'

'check out McCain's maverick sidekick's lack of respect in always calling or referring to him as John. '

Not when they are in a debate with each other. It was a juvenile attempt to pretend that they're on the same level. They are not. Obama is unqualified to share the same stage.

I think that the GOP has a problem explaining to the rest of the world the embarrassing choice McCain made for the vice-president .It doesn't really show much leadership or insight to choose a person that understand absolutely nothing about the outside world,I repeat :nothing whatsoever .

When asked how living in the state closest to Russia gave her foreign-policy experience, Palin responded thus:

'It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America. Where—where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to—to our state.'

Please stop embarrassing yourselves with any person that makes you the laughing stock all over the world .
If you want leadership and respect in the world you must choose your leaders with a lot more care.Tis also shows reading the level of arguments used by some .
'I thing McCain looked cool,Obama is so arrogant ' is not exactly showing one's intelligence to the world ,right ?

This is extremely bas news,it will probably trigger a runaway climate change that will decimate the earth's population in a few decades. You have all been warned in due time by Al Gore with as only response a smear campaign launched by the GOP and the canceling by Bush of the Kyoto protocol .The results of which your children will pay for...that is if they still survive the next decennial.
It will take a few years only before even the most thick minds start to realize that the financial crisis compares to global climate change like firework compares to a nuclear bomb. You'll have your own GOP to thank for that.

This description from someone who met McCain recently says it all - 'old, withered, small, bumbling and distinctly unimpressive'.

Obama is an electrifying force. He is understood and loved in cities such as New York and Los Angeles. But go South to a place such as Houston and you rapidly see the US remains at heart a severely conservative, racist and bigoted country - which is displayed every day by the rooted in the 50s, inward looking posters on this site.

SP4: Andrew...and the Golden ChildSep 28th, 2008 - 16:00:55

The racists, Andrew my boy, are the dems who chose Obama for President precisely because he IS black. Ask yourself if this guy would have a chance in hell if he WERE white. If he were, his name would be Edwards and he'd be dismissed back to his home state. How racist is that? The woman...she was dismissed with her paltry 18 million votes for a lifetime, obstructionist, politcal porkbarreler, who got fewer votes than the GOP VP candidate did as Mayor of Bugtussle AK.

You, Andrew now are the expeditor of the great dem premise that we have everything to fear including fear itself. Tonny says the sky is falling precisely because he heard it from Al Gore. I guess he never heard about those two brief cases from China under his desk in the 1990's. Well, you can bet Al never told him either.

Andrew, Obama is exactly what he appears to be and if living in the city makes you blind, I'd rather live where I do, thank you. Obama is the new boy-king, the messiah, golden calf, and virgin figure all in one.

Liberalism is a church Andrew, with inviolable beliefs and if they did not have this christ figure, this buddhist child-god, propped up on a carry-all, with orange-robed priests hauling him from one place to another, they'd go straight back to the most politically corrupt community in the USA (Chicago) and hunt until they found another. After all, religions know how to survive.

Electrifying the base? The only person who has done that is a white girl from Alaska, who has more experience than the golden child at executive operation. Maybe she'll run for the big chair some day.

Most of all, she was immensely successful.

You won't watch the debate Thursday as you have so firmly said you don't pay any attention to them, so perhaps you haven't seen the interviews either. You are probably just judging from her reading the early scripts. Well, a lot has gone on since then, oh wise one - you need to get with the program, but maybe you want to go down with the ship! She gave a hilarious talk about Biden - saying she hadn't met him, but had heard about him - probably since the, 'oh.(pause).......second grade'!
