Washington - US vice presidential candidates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden clashed over the centrality of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan during a fast-paced debate Thursday night, in which both reached out to middle-class Americans and touted their own running mate as best able to bring about change for the country.

In a highly anticipated debate barely one month before the November 4 general election, Biden and Palin wrestled over the idea that they could feel the pain of ordinary Americans during a serious economic crisis and stressed their own working-class roots.

Palin, a one-term governor of Alaska, said she had been picked by Republican nominee John McCain for her 'connection to the heartland of America.' She attacked the unpopular President George W Bush for a series of 'blunders' and promised that 'change is coming' with a McCain administration.

Biden said McCain had not differed from Bush on a 'single major initiative' and was on the wrong side of 'important, critical issues that affect people at the kitchen table.' His own running mate, Democratic nominee Barack Obama, would bring about the 'fundamental change' needed.

The stakes were high for Biden and Palin to demonstrate both their own competence and to tout the best qualities of their running mates as they faced off for the only time in this election campaign.

But the focus in the run-up to the debate had been squarely on 44- year-old Palin. She faced questions over her lack of experience and had lost some of the initial excitement since being catapulted onto the national scene barely one month ago by McCain, who at 72 would be the oldest president elected to a first term.

By contrast, Biden, 65, a two-time former presidential candidate and Delaware senator for 36 years, was a well-known quantity when he was tapped in August as Obama's running mate. His major pitfall was a well-known tendency for political gaffes.

Palin held her own as neither candidate made any major mistakes during a quick fire 90-minute debate that touched on the economy, health care, foreign policy and who can best bring the country back together and change the 'tone' of Washington.

With a financial crisis threatening to bring down the world's largest economy and a 700-billion-dollar rescue package to possibly be voted on by the House of Representatives Friday, the two candidates battled over which side saw this massive crisis coming.

Palin pointed to McCain's comments two years ago criticizing mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which are now under government control. She criticized Wall Street greed and the 'deception' of predatory lenders.

Biden said the crisis was evidence that Bush had promoted 'the worst economic policies we've ever had.' Obama had predicted that subprime mortgages - variable rate loans to people with poor credit - might cause trouble, he said.

On foreign policy, Palin and Biden disagreed over whether Iraq or Afghanistan was the 'central front' in the US war against terrorism.

Biden guaranteed that if there was another terrorist attack on US soil, it would come from al-Qaeda remnants on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Palin pointed to comments from al-Qaeda's own leadership that Iraq was the key battlefront.

The two also disagreed sharply over when and how to pull troops out of Iraq.

'We will end this war. For John McCain there is no end in sight,' Biden said, arguing the need for a strict timetable.

'Your plan is a white flag of surrender in Iraq,' Palin retorted, saying the president must listen to commanders on the ground.

Some 3,100 journalists were accredited to cover the debate at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri, and the event was broadcast by all major US television networks.

Opinions polls have swung in favour of Obama in recent weeks as a financial crisis shifted the focus of the race to economic issues, Obama's stronger suit, and away from McCain's strength of national security. Obama and McCain squared off in their first debate last week and will go for a second round next week.

Both Palin and Biden were forced to square their own political perspectives with those of their running mates.

Biden had to answer critics that argue his Washington background does not sit well with the 47-year-old Obama's message of change. He pointed to his own record of promoting change during his time in the Senate.

Palin had to answer for some conservative beliefs, such as a skepticism of the man-made causes of global warming, that do not square with McCain's own views. She argued in the debate that the focus should be on the 'effects' of global warming rather than its 'causes.'

The other factor hovering over the debate was that of gender. Palin would be the first ever female vice president. Biden was warned by pundits against appearing overly aggressive or condescending but showed neither during the 90-minute debate.

It`s like something from Disneyland.

They don`t know what economy is, but they could always ask that little turd Bush - after all in his 8 years, HE`S screwed it up real and proper.

AND terrorism - well, who better to ask than that brain-dead brown job from Illinois. With his Muslim connections he will be more than expert in filling them in on how to kill, cripple and destroy anything American.

McCain, Oh my arthritis is killing me, Palin, the pride of the Eskimo`s and the face to go with it, Cocoa bean Obama, the juvenile black boy from ? er well, from nowhere really and Biden, the dusty old relic picked up at some flea market.

What a motley pack of nondescript`s to form the Presidential kernel of Government for the great UNITED STATES !

You poor sod`s. Grin and bear it for another unpalatable and agonising 4 years, keep your money under the old oak tree in a box and make sure you get in front of the welfare queue. Just push all those blacks aside.

Biden Lied About Obama Not Supporting Hamas Election

That’s right—not only did Biden confuse the West Bank and Gaza, he blatantly lied when he said that Barack Obama did not support the Palestinian elections that put Hamas in control of Gaza.

During His 2006 Trip To The Middle East, Obama Met With Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas And Said The Election Represented An “Opportunity...To Consolidate Behind A Single Government.” “Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s journey to the Middle East took him to the West Bank Thursday for a meeting with the man elected to replace Yasser Arafat. ... For a time Thursday in the West Bank there was only the clatter of cameras as the newly elected president of the Palestinian authority, Mahmoud Abbas, met with Illinois Senator Barack Obama. At a meeting with Palestinian students Thursday, Obama said the U.S. will never recognize winning Hamas candidates unless the group renounces its fundamental mission to eliminate Israel, and Obama told ABC7 he delivered that message to the Palestinian president. ‘Part of the opportunity here with this upcoming election is to consolidate behind a single government with a single authority that can then negotiate as a reliable partner with Israel,’ said Obama.” (Chuck Goudie, “Obama Meets With Arafat’s Successor,” ABC 7 News, obama.senate.gov, 1/12/06)

The Palestinian News Agency WAFA Reported That Obama Was Supportive Of The Palestinian Elections Being Held At Their Scheduled Time. “President Mahmoud Abbas met Thursday with the U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), in the Presidential HQ in Ramallah...President briefed the U.S. Senator about the latest developments in the Palestinian territories including the preparations for the legislative elections.... Abbas and Obama discussed the means of underpinning the American-Palestinian economic relations...Obama asserted the US supports and eager that the Palestinian legislative elections on its proposed time (January 25).”

The point you missed you idiot is that Biden lied. The other point is that the elections legitimized a terrorist organization whose sole aim is to destroy Israel. Not that you would have a problem with that:

Biden on elections in the West Bank last night:

'Here's what the president said when we said no. He insisted on elections on the West Bank, when I said, and others said, and Barack Obama said, 'Big mistake. Hamas will win. You'll legitimize them.' What happened? Hamas won.'

But news reports from that time tell a different story:

'During His 2006 Trip To The Middle East, Obama Met With Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas And Said The Election Represented An 'Opportunity...To Consolidate Behind A Single Government.'...Obama asserted the US supports and [is] eager that the Palestinian legislative elections [take place at the] proposed time (January 25).'

Further:

The Washington Post's Glenn Kessler notes that 'Obama had been a senator for only a few days when the election took place, but if he made such statements, they did not appear in news reports or transcripts that are contained in the Nexis or Factiva databases.''

Joe Biden’s Alternate Universe
Michael J. Totten -(Abridged)

In Thursday night’s vice presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin, Biden said the strangest and most ill-informed thing I have ever heard about Lebanon in my life. “When we kicked — along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, I said and Barack said, “Move NATO forces in there. Fill the vacuum, because if you don’t know — if you don’t, Hezbollah will control it.” Now what’s happened? Hezbollah is a legitimate part of the government in the country immediately to the north of Israel.” [Emphasis added.]

What on Earth is he talking about? The United States and France may have kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon in an alternate universe, but nothing even remotely like that ever happened in this one.

Nobody – nobody – has ever kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon. Not the United States. Not France. Not Israel. And not the Lebanese. Nobody.

Joe Biden has literally no idea what he’s talking about.

It’s too bad debate moderator Gwen Ifill didn’t catch him and ask a follow up question: When did the United States and France kick Hezbollah out of Lebanon?

The answer? Never. And did Biden and Senator Barack Obama really say NATO troops should be sent into Lebanon? When did they say that? Why would they say that? They certainly didn’t say it because NATO needed to prevent Hezbollah from returning–since Hezbollah never went anywhere.

I tried to chalk this one up as just the latest of Biden’s colorful gaffes. Did he mean to say “we kicked Syria out of Lebanon?” But that wouldn’t make any more sense. First of all, the Lebanese kicked Syria out of Lebanon. Not the United States, and not France. But he clearly meant to say Hezbollah, not Syria, because he correctly notes just a few sentences later that Hezbollah is part of Lebanon’s government. He wasn’t talking about Syria. He was talking about Hezbollah all the way through, at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of his outlandish assertion.

Like many who watched the debate, I was bracing myself for Palin to say something off-putting about foreign policy. She’s the one who needed the crash course, allegedly; Biden is supposedly Mr. Foreign Policy. He’s supposed to be the experienced elder statesman Senator Barack Obama chose to help him govern and fill in some of his knowledge and experience gaps. He’s supposed to know far more about foreign policy than she does.[...]

Biden, though, against all expectations and odds, managed to say something far more bizarre and off-planet than anything Palin has said on the topic to date.

Simply repeating absurd statements in other words does not add any additional value. When I read that Biden is a liar because Hamas won the elections in Palestine and that he thus legitimized Hamas,I read complete stupidity .This is pure smear fromů AIPAC and it's croneys trying to present a distorted picture of reality .As long as the american people keep buying this nonsense there will never be peace in the Middle East .If Hamas was elected then it means they represent the palestinian people ,like it or not .It means you will have to talk to them, like it or not .Unless of course you think you can pick somebody to represent the palestinians .See how absurd your stance is ?
For 40 years the palestinians have fought against the occupation of their lands by immigrant jews from Europe and the USA whose only claim to that land is to be found in a bronze age textbook that was written by high priests and kings from a desert tribe 300 years ago .It might be gospel to you and them but it is a worthless document with no legal basis, get over that. The palestinians have been living in that land for more than 700 years,it was theirs until jewish colonists due to the centuries of persecution in Europe culminating in the holocaust craving of rebuilding a jewish state .One can feel sympathy for that but it still does not mean that the palestinians should have to pay for the horrible crimes committed again by others .The colonization and building of Israel have always been presented in the US and European media as the story of settlers building a nation in a land void of population .Not so,it was te occupation of a land in which millions of civilized people lived in peace. Many US citizens are still buying this distorted version of reality ,based on nothing more than propaganda and spin.Small wonder that after struggling in vain for decades to regain some of their lands a large part of the palestinians turned away from the western world and to radical movements .One might not like that but it is the result of western indifference to their suffering ,Hamas now represents them, thanks to the indifference of the west in great part .
I presume Joe Biden has a bit more understanding of this situation and thus is singled out by AIPAC and the GOP as being a friend of terrorists .Completely absurd,it has been the policy of Israel and AIPAC to label everybody that goes beyond the israeli propaganda as a friend of terrorists .If Hamas exists ,Israel and the USA are to blame first of all for that, their distortion of the historical facts has done little more than radicalizing the palestinian population .
Nobod in the USA dares to talk about the middle east with a different voice from AIPAC,they generate so much financial support that going against their spin is political suicide .Joe Bidn is apparently the new enemy of AIPAC for daring to look a bit further than his nose .THE GOP smear campaign task force is making sure he will pay the price for that by labeling him 'friend of terrorists'.Tis is similar to the techniques used by Dr Goebbels ,the propaganda minister of Hitler .A shame for a democracy.

Palin responded to questions like she had memorized everything and she needed to get it out before she forgot it!! The 'good-old-girl crap is getting increasingly hard to swallow - especially when she asked Biden if she could call him 'Joe'! Where are the critics who were all over Obama when he didn't call John boy, Senator McCain??? She stood there acting like she was an expert on foreign policy - what a crock. Like Laura Bush stated 'Palin is a quick study'! She was very good at memorizing all that had been pounded at her previous to the debate - I'll give her that.
I, for one, will be very happy when she returns to 'up there' in Alaska with her brood and 'first dude'!

Both are dumb as hell. I would bang her tho.

Oh?Oct 6th, 2008 - 13:24:34

Probably both! Palin couldn't hold up to Dan Q. in a spelling B, let alone Biden's foreign experience. She is having a ball spewing her simple talk, and simpletons are falling right and left for this crap.
Hopefully, most of them won't know how to go about voting anyway!

But her dubious past is catching up with her -

Seven aides to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have reversed course and agreed to testify in an investigation into whether the Republican vice presidential nominee abused her powers by firing a commissioner who refused to dismiss her former brother-in-law.

SP4: Yes Fred.....next, Jimmy Hoffa ...Oct 6th, 2008 - 19:10:00

...will be found under her porch!...right next to the Wovlerine or Badger living there...

Please Fred tell us there is more than this. The last woman to run for a federal exec office, who never got a single question on any of it, was involved in:

White Water

FBI records scandal

Firing of the Asst. US attorney investigating White Water (firings?)

Mr. Hsu's traveling illegal immigrint donation show

Vince Foster, or lack of him...

Travel office scandal

chinese and russian campaign funds scandal

MFN for China for campaign funds

Pardons of Puerto Rican terrorists

But no, Fred, we're going to run up to Buttfuc, AK and ask about one f--king guy who was pissing off the Governor and then, from this divine all sorts of wierd conclusions while the dem frontrunner was accepting loans and money from Countrywide, the Fannie Mae Di Medici's, and breaking bread with Osama Bin Ayers.

Go now Fred, and dig up that magic moment.

Palin is stupid!! SHE is the one picked for VP, so what has anyone else's connections have to do with anything now? SHE is the one people need to concentrate on, not on who would have been, could have been.......

SP4: why yes, ProfessorOct 6th, 2008 - 21:42:16

..after all, the libnazi elite has had such stellar success at defining people:

Clinton - a man who had a girl brought to a hotel room by the state police where he fondled her against her will, then exposed himself. Too bad he did not fire that state trooper, eh?

Bush - after he fooled the dems into voting for the Iraq war and has managed to manipulate Harry Reid inot passing everything he's proposed with a 30% approval rating...who are the stupid one's now?

Rove - after he managed to get Bush elected to two terms....please tell us how stupid he is ?

Kerry - managed to have about the same grades as Bush in undergrad school and was touted as such an intellectual...uh oh...

Gore - THAT talking head, managed to get a Nobel for what the co-recipent, John R. Christy, a real scientist, said was questionable.

Cheney - who has managed to send the dems home in attack after attack. What's next, another conversation about his lesbian daughter?

Now that you are zero for five, please explain how you plan to up your average with Palin.

She was right about Ayers and Obama, and the relationship is undeniable.

Palin is still stupid and it's been proven over and over that most of what she is spewing out are lies. If people fall for that good old girl crap, so be it. McCain has had his share of unsavory characters in his past and present for that matter, and no one needs to answer to you whatsoever. McCain/Palin have to resort to mudslinging - they don't have much else!!

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president on Friday, citing the senator's good judgment, 'deep sense of calm' and 'first-class political temperament.'

Weld said he has never endorsed a Democrat for president before, but in the last six weeks or so, it became 'close to a no-brainer.'
