Washington - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Monday called for new measures to spur job growth and help homeowners threatened by foreclosure stay in their homes, as national polls showed the candidate pulling strongly ahead of Republican John McCain as voters focus on the economy.

'Right now, we face an immediate economic emergency that requires urgent action. We can't wait to help workers and families and communities who are struggling right now,' Obama said at a campaign rally in the battleground state of Ohio. 'We need to pass an economic rescue plan for the middle-class and we need to do it now.'

The Illinois senator called for a tax credit for businesses that create new jobs and other tax measures aimed at small businesses and the middle class. He also said he would seek a 90-day moratorium on home foreclosures, which have hit records in the past year and severely damaged the balance sheets of banks spurring the current financial crisis.

His plan also would allow investors to take money from retirement accounts without early withdrawal penalties and lend federal money to state and local governments hit by the credit crisis.

McCain meanwhile questioned how Obama would pay for his proposals. 'He can't spend that much without raising your taxes or digging us further into debt. I'm going to make government live on a budget just like you do,' the Arizona senator said.

McCain on Monday focussed on his position as an underdog, as polls showed him sliding.

A Gallup Poll released Monday showed Obama leading McCain by 10 percentage points, with 51 per cent of registered voters favouring the Democrat versus 41 per cent for the Republican. Among those likely to go to the polls, Obama led 51 per cent to 44 per cent. The survey had a margin of error of plus, or minus, 2 percentage points.

Other polls showed similar advantages for Obama.

But McCain said it was too soon to write off his campaign, which came from behind in the primary elections to secure the party's nomination despite having once been written off as a long shot.

'The national media has written us off. Senator Obama is measuring the drapes and planning with Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi and Senator (Harry) Reid to raise taxes, increase spending - take away your right to vote by secret ballot and labor elections, and concede defeat in Iraq,' McCain said.

'Nothing is inevitable here. We never give up. We never quit,' he added.

Lies.......Oct 13th, 2008 - 21:09:44

McCain keeps spouting out lies about Obama raising taxes - it's getting old. He needs to tell the public what intelligent plans he has for his administration if for some small chance he is elected.

McCain is coming off as rattled and edgy. Not someone I would feel is dependable to take charge of the government, and most definitely not with Palin as his running mate. I would never consider him after Palin was forced on him. She might make a good cheer leader.

SP4: Better look again....Oct 13th, 2008 - 21:50:42

..if you are a small business person, in a proprietory business, you will get:

a tax increase on your income (for folks in the above $132,000 bracket per person)

a capital gains tax on any securities transactions (20 to 30%...if you can even pin him down...)

A business tax rise )still cannot pin him down but he as said he would)

This means the most vibrant part of our economy for growth, the small business person, gets whacked the most, and who can afford it the least.

So, in an economy we desparately need growth in, how will this ever help?

I have a feeling every generation needs to do this to learn from it. Here we go again...

PALIN ? GET RID OF HEROct 13th, 2008 - 22:01:29

I have never come across such a female scumbag as this piece of puke from Alaska in all my life.

She is utterly revolting. Everything about her stinks, herself, her love of killing animals for fun, her lies, her deceit, her abuse of authority, given to her by condescending old men, her entire vile presence is nauseating.

AND are YOU going to vote a creature like this into the White House as Vice President ?

All I can say is ;- VOTE FOR OBAMA AND BIDEN ! At least those two although a million miles away from being Presidential material, are 'decent' human beings if you stretch your imagination to the limit.

Get rid of the Alaskan bitch and Yellow Johnny - MAKE IT PRESIDENT OBAMA.

WHAT A BLOODY CHOICE !!! No wonder people are jumping off the Golden Gate bridge like yo-yo`s, it`s a miracle that the bay is not packed so full of them that you could walk across.
It could well be after November.

The Palin storyOct 13th, 2008 - 22:45:11

has been out since Friday. Not a peep about it from SP4. Now he comes creeping out of his hidey-hole and starts spewing some nonsense. Too late, SP. Give it up until 2012.(If your drug addled brain lasts that long) McCain's hopes are a smoking hole in the ground. Your hero couldn't bail out of this one after Palin put a SAM through him. With friends and running mates like her, who needs enemies? Pitbull Palin, the attack dog turned on her master and chewed off his legs. Sarah(SAM)Palin, destroyer of hopes and dreams.

DAT OLE BLACK MAGIC !Oct 13th, 2008 - 23:07:31

ESS PEE, take no notice of 'ESS PEE SAYS', they are the words of an uneducated imbecile.

Every word you say as always (well, perhaps NOT always, but close) is truly logical and correct. They poke fun at you, but the common herd always despise the intellectual.

ESS PEE, although you are quite correct in what you say - that is fairly streetwise common sense and factual in respect of what is being said, BUT you forgot ONE thing.

By your own words a few posts ago, America is chock full of corruption in high places and most of all in Government where a few tweaks here and there yields millions for the perpetrators.

The present economic catastrophe has been caused by just this factor.
GREED in abundance and unlimited, irresponsible lending by the banks, plus taking high risks with Trillions of dollars.

It has all now gone BANG and can only be given a cosmetic nudge towards recovery by borrowing Trillions of dollars more, to add to the $10 Trillion we are already in debt.

Nope my old friend, get rid of greedy self-interested crooks in high places, THAT is what is needed. BUT, the USA is FULL of such crooks, it always has been - the American Dream.

Otherwise the good old USA will fly round in ever decreasing circles like the legendary OOZLAM bird and finally disappear with all it`s people right up it`s own arsehole !

One more reason to not trust MCain's economicsOct 13th, 2008 - 23:28:12

McCain and company can't count. At a rally at Virginia Beach today, Palin and McCain were both there. Here is a quote from the loal paper: 'The McCain campaign estimated the crowd at 25,000 people, but local police and fire marshal put it closer to 12,000. The convention center holds 20,000 people.'
So, 12,000 becomes 25,000, exceeding the capacity of the building, breaking the fire odinances. If you are worried about inflation, be very afraid. The debt will skyrocket faster than a SAM. These people just plain can't count.

Palin, plus all the negative campaigning, led to McCain's downfall. He has spent way too much time on this type of campaigning and not enough talking about his proposed policies. The problem with Palin is self explanatory. McCain went in his own nest so to speak.

It isn't just that McCain is old - everybody knows that - it is the fact that he looked so old, feeble and a rambling incompetent in the last TV debate. Even Republicans must realise that he might not last a four year term (mentally, even if he lasts physically)so you would then be in the hands of that total moron Palin with no experience of governing other than by sleaze and corruption, and absolutely no understanding of the World outside American borders (which is also unfortunately true of most Americans)
