Washington - With the US and global economy in turmoil, it was the trials and tribulations of a budding small business owner, 'Joe the plumber,' that took centre stage in the final debate between US presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain.

Battling for the vote of ordinary middle-class Americans just three weeks before the general election, both candidates apparently decided the economic woes facing the country were embodied in Joe Wurzelbacher, a man who made an appearance at an Obama election rally in Ohio.

Joe, who was first raised in Wednesday night's debate by McCain, had complained at the rally that he could not afford to buy his own plumbing business because of Obama's plan to tax wealthy Americans.

The plumber made numerous appearances throughout the debate as both McCain and Obama promised to lower his taxes, improve his health benefits and prospects of running a small business with the US economy on the verge of a recession.

The debate at Hofstra University in New York state was focused solely on domestic policy, but the exchanges also mirrored the changing dynamic of the last few weeks.

A financial crisis threatening to bring down the US economy has dominated the final stretch of the general election and helped give Obama a commanding advantage.

Obama leads by 7.3 percentage points nationally and in most key battleground states according to an average of all opinion polls compiled by realclearpolitics.com.

With that in mind, it was McCain who came out more aggressively Wednesday and managed the tempo through much of the final debate.

McCain spoke of cutting spending, lowering taxes and prioritizing mortgage-holders struggling to keep their homes. He attacked Obama for wanting to raise taxes during tough economic times.

Obama countered that he would lower taxes further for middle-class workers, and in a regular refrain linked McCain to the economic policies of President George W Bush.

Many media pundits called it McCain's best performance of three debates, though opinion polls suggested Obama had still come out the stronger debater.

But neither performance is likely have a significant effect on the election campaign. Just how badly the US economy fares between now and November 4 will be key.

With an unpopular Republican president at the helm during a serious economic downturn, opposition Democrats have watched the electoral climate swing dramatically in their favour over the last few weeks.

Obama has consistently been favoured over McCain on economic issues.

'The past month has taken an enormous toll on the McCain campaign,' Karl Rove, who orchestrated Bush's two electoral victories, wrote in the Wall Street Journal Thursday.

Rove believes McCain must hammer home the argument that Obama will raise taxes during difficult economic times.

Obama promises middle-class tax cuts but has made no apologies for seeking to raise taxes on wealthier Americans.

One thing is clear: 'Joe the plumber' is now the most sought after voter in this race.

Joe the plumber says he will vote McCainOct 16th, 2008 - 08:22:14

As for the real-life Joe the plumber, Joe Wurzelbacher gave a lengthy interview with familysecuritymatters.com, in which he discussed his dissatisfaction with Obama’s response to his question. “So he does want to punish me, he does want to punish me for working harder to – you know, my big thing is the American Dream,” he said....

Ohio’s Toledo Blade reports that Wurzelbacher tuned in to the debate tonight and “still thinks Senator Obama’s plan would keep him from buying the small business that employs him.” Wurzelbacher said that McCain “got it right as far as I go.”

Obama telling Joe he's going to give his cash awayOct 16th, 2008 - 08:35:22

So this guy works 12 hrs a day, 6 days a week for years unplugging toilets and Obama is going to take his cash away to give to his core constituency: People who think you owe them a living.
-------------------------------------------------------------
...Joe The Plumber' has weighed in on Wednesday's presidential debate and he says that Barack Obama's tax plan 'infuriates me.'

'To be honest with you, that infuriates me,' plumber Joe Wurzelbacher told Nightline's Terry Moran. 'It's not right for someone to decide you made too much---that you've done too good and now we're going to take some of it back.'

'That's just completely wrong,' he added.

Wurzelbacher, who says no one from the McCain campaign got in touch with him before Wednesday, was a centerpiece of the third and final presidential debate.

The plumber's brush with fame began on Sunday when he confronted Barack Obama outside of Toledo, Ohio. Wurzelbacher challenged the Democratic candidate on his plan to raise taxes on the top five percent of earners -- a policy which would, by the Obama campaign's own estimation, mean higher taxes for 184,000 small businesses.

'I'm getting ready to buy a company that makes 250 to 280 thousand dollars a year,' Wurzelbacher told Obama. 'Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?'

McCain’s position is nobody should pay higher taxes during a recession, so that businesses can create jobs, and that the only time in American history this was done was during Herbert Hoover’s administration. Obama’s position is that wealth should be redistributed regardless of economic times in the interest of fairness, even if that means fewer jobs.

Joe the Plumber called Barack Obama a “socialist” for these views. That is perhaps harsh rhetoric, although the view is consistent with historically Marxist teachings.

'I don't like it,' said Wurzelbacher. 'You know, me or -- you know, Bill Gates, I don't care who you are. If you worked for it, if it was your idea, and you implemented it, it's not right for someone to decide you made too much.'

McCain Wins Round Three
by Stephen F. Hayes (Abridged)

The winner, and in my view quite decisively, was John McCain. From the very first question, McCain seemed certain of himself and his answers. While he wasn't as polished and articulate as Obama has been in the first two debates, I thought McCain had several winning moments.

Most interestingly, at several points McCain managed to turn the debate, however briefly, to a discussion of national security and foreign policy. He used a question about Joe Biden to criticize his colleague for being 'wrong' on so many of the issues on which he is supposedly an expert. He used another question to criticize Obama on NAFTA, pointing out that any U.S. pull back could mean that Canada would sell its oil to China. And on another, McCain pointed out Obama's opposition to the Colombia Free Trade Agreement and suggested that this position, together with his willingness to meet with the world's bad guys like Hugo Chavez without preconditions, demonstrates Obama's misplaced priorities on foreign policy.
[...]

Among the other highlights for McCain were the repeated references to 'Joe the Plumber'--certain to be mocked on Saturday Night Live this weekend. At an Obama campaign stop in Toledo, Ohio, earlier this week, Joe Wurzelbacher wanted to know whether Obama's tax plan was going to keep him from buying the business where he has been employed for several years.

'Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?' he asked the candidate.

Obama explained the various marginal rates and said:

'It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you that they've got a chance at success, too.' And in a line that McCain campaign is seizing on to demonstrate Obama's redistributionist tendencies, Obama added: 'I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody.'

McCain raised the exchange several times, and after Obama's suggestion that only wealthy business owners would pay higher taxes McCain looked into the camera and declared: 'Hey Joe, you're rich!'

Judging from his facial expressions, Obama had been expecting that McCain might make use of the exchange from Toledo. It's hard to know what viewers made of it, but Obama's look of bemusement, if that's what it was, could easily be mistaken for an arrogant smirk. Either way, it's probably not the kind of look you want voters to see as your opponent makes a serious (and effective) point about your tax policies.

More important for McCain, all of this discussion about Joe the Plumber at the debate ensures that the original Obama-Joe exchange will be in news stories tomorrow. As McCain adviser Matt McDonald put it in the spin room, it's a moment that will last well beyond Wednesday night.

McCain seemed sharper than he had been in the first two debates, often picking up on something Obama had said and quickly turning it against him. So when Obama noted that he'd consider further offshore oil exploration, McCain pounced. 'I admire his eloquence, but you really have to listen carefully,' McCain declared. 'He said he'd 'look at' offshore drilling. Look at.'

It wasn't just that McCain had many good moments; Obama had several bad ones. Bob Schieffer asked the candidates which programs they would scrap given the hard economic realities facing the country. Although it's a question that has been asked in previous debates, Obama gave the same worthless answer he has given before: 'Programs that don't work we should cut. Programs we need we should make better.' It was the debate equivalent of voting present.

tonny from belgiumOct 16th, 2008 - 08:55:54

There goes the GOP internet task force again.Welcome this time,I see a new strategy ha been developed ,one about the real issues:the crisis.
It is now up to the people to compare both programs and decide for themselvers who offers the best chances to lift oneself out of this quagmire. That will not be easy for most as plans tend to be not very transparent ,promisszes have often be broken (like the trickle down economy )resulting in a widening gap wetween the top 2 percent incomes and the rest of the country .
Logically for the economy to regain momentum two things are important:consumer spending and job creation. What good is there in a policy that consists in outsourcing labor to other countries, move complete manufacturing plants to countries like China ?The immediate result of laying off labor force in the USA results in poverty,a word not often used for the current situation in states like Michigan, but nertheles true.Less consumer buying power has been absorbed for a while by credit spending ,delaying and amplifying the problem .Many people need two jobs to get around, often badly paid and far from home .the documentary made by Michael Moore in Fint,Michigan was eloquent enough .The rich got richer, the poor got poorer and rather than trickling down on the poor ,the richest part only offered a golden shower to most of you .
Some say that taxing the richest part only manages to scare off the investors ,what a bright example of spin .Unless you have a porsche or ferrari dealership ,nothing will ever come your way ,the rich buy from the rich, they don't buy at burger king or KFC.They won't buy your house either ,nor your 200 feet yacht .The rich have a paralel economy that caters only for them.
Would lowering their income tax create new jobs then in the USA ?Not unless you pay the US worker the same salary as the average chinese worker:peanuts .
Another legitimate question then is how to fill the 10 trillion dollar gap left behing by Bush without raising taxes for someone .Any plan for that ?
Itmust be done somehow.

Simply not true. By any standard, either adjusted by inflation or as a percentage of GDP, in lives lost, etc.. It is simply not true.

'How do we pay for it?'

By not wasting so much money on pork and programs that aren't doing anything and maximizing the efficiency of the ones that are necessary. Government wastes money, therefore reducig the size of government will reduce the waste.

'Approx. 70% of all corportations[sic] in the USA pay no income taxes. How is government supposed to be funded?'

Most lost money. The ones that are making money pay the highest tax rate on earth next to japan. Why stay here if you can move across the border and pay less tax?

Firstly, they are not your observations, they are simply the talking points that have been inserted in to your brain by the DNC PR machine that you dutifully have adopted as your own 'thoughts'. Secondly, you are incorrect. We live in a global economy and if you chase business away it will simply pack up and go elsewhere, taking the jobs with it.

'It has aleady[sic] been destroyed,'

The USA has the largest GDP of any country. We have the highest productivity per capita of any country. By any measure we have among the highest standards of living in the world.

They ARE on obamas staff and are among his highest contributers. Yes, the SAME-EXACT-PEOPLE who caused this economic melt down are heavy contributers to Obama and his economic advisers.

'What is the role of government in your world? '

To fulfill core obligations and not get in the way of individual freedoms.

' Should we privatize everything including the armed forces?'

No.

'You sound like an anarchist. '

Come on..

'Perhaps you are right and we should abolish government. '

Please show me where I have advocated that we 'abolish' government.

'After contributing to social security every year for over 40 years, at double the rate of prior generation's contributions, just to have government waste it all on the general budget is totally irresponsible.'

Finally, we are in agreement. Brace yourself... it is going to get worse if Obama is allowed to sodomize the economy to get the weak hooked on a socialist nanny state.

Yup, the leftist thugs have been working on Joe. Lets say, on the off chance that any of that is true: How does that detract from Joe's cogent observation that Obama's policies are repackaged socialism? It doesn't. You don't have to be a voter to know what socialism will do to your business, your paychecks, and life in general. It will destroy businesses, put a serious crimp in your paycheck, and reduce the quality of life all around you as other businesses suffer similar fates to your own.

'On Good Morning America Thursday, Joe admitted that he does not make $250,000.'

That doesn't mean he doesn't have it saved to buy the business.

We don't need redistribution of wealth. Socialism isn't the answer, and that's all that Obama is peddling. His taxing scheme is nothing more than taking money from the middle class and above and giving it to the poor - calling refundable tax credits a tax cut is a blatant lie and misrepresentation of what he's doing. That's redistribution of wealth on a massive scale and will not help the middle class.

It will not help Joe, nor will it help anyone else, even the 40% who already pay no taxes and would see federal payments increase as a result of the tax credits Obama proposes - because the economy will continue to sag under the weight of ever higher taxes.

LOL, fantasize much? McCain would never do that because he loves the USA and Obama resents it. If Obama cared about the USA he would say: 'In the interests of this country, I throw my support behind Senator McCain until I can go and get more then 143 days of experience in the senate.

The threat is idiots who can't compose a rudimentary English sentence. That would be you in this case.

Joe the Plumber, may have a very interesting connection to John McCain. In fact, Joe the Plumber (Joe Wurzelbacher) of Cincinnati, Ohio may be related to one Robert Wurzelbacher of Cincinnati, Ohio, who happens to be Charles Keating's son-in-law. Robert Wurzelbacher was implicated in the Keating 5 scandal, and sentenced to 40 months in prison in 1993. Wurzelbacher is also a huge Republican donor.

Keep watching this story because if it proves true that 'Joe the Plumber' is the wealthy, Republican regular the liberal blogs are claiming he is, the McCain campaign could go down as the most corrupt and inept in history.

you americans make me laugh you would'nt know a socialist if one ran you over even your so called 'left wing' party (Democrats) are on the right in european terms, and as for taxation we all have to pay either through central taxation or through private provision, thats worked really well in the case of your healthcare system which is the largest single cause of bankruptcy in middle age in your country. We have a 'free' (paid for through taxation)health service which I would put up against yours any day and noone gets turned away for being poor or uninsured, oh and by the way your 'private' health system costs your taxpayers more per head in government taxation then the UK's 'free' model

McCain should owe Joe big time after hauling that story out and causing this guy so much negative publicity, then it was discovered he owed back taxes to boot. Maybe McConfused should pay them for him! He also wanted to drag him along to a rally. OMG

JOE the 'plant'Oct 17th, 2008 - 15:04:03

Why isn't anyone reporting that Joe the Plumber was a 'plant' in the Obama crowd, put there by the McCain campaign? McCain's 'Old buddy Joe' had already made the rounds of the right-wing talk radio shows days before - they planned this all along. Unfortunately for McCain, his campaign didn't vet Joe the Plumber any more than they vetted Sarah Palin.

But, if you want to get your panties in a knot about it, fine. Your sexuality, or more likely, lack of sexuality is not my problem. So, in conclusion, Smiley D, creepy stalker of SP's stalker, pudknocker, the fricking moron who can't get ANYTHING right, You got it wrong AGAIN. LOLOLOLOL.

So why bring it up? Is this another example of your psychological projection? Is this another reason you lash out at people? Stuck in the closet?

An American citizen should be able to ask Obama
a question, without being crucified by the Obama campaign.
Obama is ahead in the polls, but are the polls
a realistic reflection of what will actually happen
in the voting booth? Obama is outspending McCain
3 to one ... He has 90% of the media in his pocket
... he has 98% of the black vote ... he has voter fraud
on his side, with groups like Acorn ... and yet the
election is still close. So far, all the conclusions by all the
pundits are totally based upon POLLS. Not a single actual vote
has been cast yet. Obama supporters gush at how
well their man has done in the debates, which proves
once again that Obama is a good debater and a good
speaker. It doesn't say anything about his character,
judgement, or what kind of a leader he would be.
I still would rather trust a man who would not sell out
his fellow prisoners, even during 5 years of torture,
than to trust a man who betrayed a 20 year friendship,
for personal ambition. And ... regarding this election,
until people actually vote ... it ain't over till it's over
