So I am one of those infamous registered 'Independents.' My voting record however tends to lean toward conservative. I voted for George H.W, Dole, George W x2 and for the first time in my voting career I will be voting for the 'other side.' McCain lost my vote this past week. I am not only tired, but disappointed with his negative campaigning - Please Oh Please talk to the issues! I know that you are 'supposedly' down in the polls, but calling Obama a socialist, tying him to a 60's radical hippy when Obama was 8 yrs old...REALLY?...REALLY??...How is THIS going to ensure that I don't lose my house, my job, my life savings? Don't get me wrong, I get what you're doing McCain, and I understand it, BUT this election is VERY SERIOUS!!! People are losing their jobs, their retirements, their homes and ALL you can do is sling mud at a candiate who is actually talking about the issues. Your behavior is not one of a TRUE leader...it is LAME...SERIOUSLY LAME! I don't blame you Senator McCain, I actually blame your advisors and their poor judgment. And Palin...what were you thinking? My liberal friends showed me her interviews with Katie Couric and I can't even defend her. I never thought I would say this, but the majority of America is simply tired of UNINTELLEGENT POLITICIANS. WE SIMPLY CAN'T AFFORD IT! While other world leaders are embracing future technologies (which create jobs!) you want to keep us hindered in the past (Drill baby drill...are you kidding me?) Get with the times. The future is now and American's are ready to compete. Actually I've been sitting on the fence but what changed my mind was when I watched the charity dinner (forgot what it's for) when both candidates have to give a funny speech. I thought Obama was nervous and looked like a junior senator (that he really is), whereas McCain was composed, in control, and very much at ease.
While that's hardly a valid reason to choose a President, I really don't know how to differentiate between the 2 candidates anymore. What they say during the campaign is really meaningless, since they are not going to be held accountable for any of it (ala 'Read my lips...'). Also, everything they say is scripted by their writers anyway and may not be what they actually think. Seems like the only way to judge this is by their historical actions, or one's gut feeling. My gut feeling goes to McCain right now.

Face it, 'Merica: you are a financially broke, bankrupt country. It does not matter who gets elected, his 'choices' as President will be far more dictated by the situations present (economical, environmental, and otherwise) and the few options available than by the philosophy of the President.

my sister who moved to the US works 90 hours a week and has to pay tons for her kids education and their insurance and also lives in a nice house.

americans make a lot of money for the government because they work hard but you spend all the money on the wars and stuff OUTSIDE YOUR COUNTRY. so for example you roads suck! with how much money you make and already give to the government you should demand a lot more from your governement. and that is why obama would be a better choice since he seems to want to spend the tax money on improving your own country and is less likely to start more wars. i read an interesting fact that with the money spent in iraq you could have payed tutition for every kid in college now!! and lets not forget all the people that were lost in Iraq!!! ...education already has more than enough money to accomplish it's goals. 1 in 4 teens to not graduate from High school. This ibecause they quit attending school, not because the school is closed. They are good clean well lit facilities with qualified teachers, ready to teach. Bush saw to that when he passed the No-Child-Left-Behind act.

By the way, how's the progress on getting sanitary toilet facilities for the remaining 20% of Europe going? I understand girls stay home from school when they are having their period, due to the utterly skanky conditions at their institutions of learning....perhaps the EU should fund that before engaging the enemy in Afghanistan or the Congo? The United States is losing ground in education, as peers across the globe zoom by with bigger gains in student achievement and school graduations, a study shows.
Among adults age 25 to 34, the U.S. is ninth among industrialized nations in the share of its population that has at least a high school degree. In the same age group, the United States ranks seventh, with Belgium, in the share of people who hold a college degree.
By both measures, the United States was first in the world as recently as 20 years ago, said Barry McGaw, director of education for the Paris-based Organization for Cooperation and Development. The 30-nation organization develops the yearly rankings as a way for countries to evaluate their education systems and determine whether to change their policies.
McGaw said that the United States remains atop the 'knowledge economy,' one that uses information to produce economic benefits. But, he said, 'education's contribution to that economy is weakening, and you ought to be worrying.'
The report bases its conclusions about achievement mainly on international test scores released last December. They show that compared with their peers in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, 15-year-olds in the United States are below average in applying math skills to real-life tasks.
Top performers included Finland, Korea, the Netherlands, Japan, Canada and Belgium.
Given what the United States spends on education, its relatively low student achievement through high school shows its school system is 'clearly inefficient,' McGaw said.
Surely you jest, SP. The lack of funding for school programs is atrocious as is the high cost of a college education. Maybe you are talking about private schools?? Parents have to pay more and more each year for school supplies that used to be furnished by the schools. When a family has several children, it is a terrible burden at the first of the year and continues throughout the year. I can't remember the McCain campaign talking about better education or anything of much importance other than his constant attacks at Obama. I think when people hear he and Palin starting on those negative attacks, it's just so easy to tune them out. Everyone knows those speeches by heart. And someone saying McCain doesn't have any money in an earlier post - surely that was also a tongue-in-cheek remark. As far as McCain or Palin for that matter, on SNL - maybe funny and just like 'us ordinary' people to some, but to others it was dumb and a waste of time.
Maybe the first commentator meant that McCain is truly the best man for the job of selling underwear and kitchen utensils. I can agree with that, and I would be willing to trust Palin with the same sales job provided she's closely supervised.
Well, to the people from Belgium and other countries commenting on this whole thing. Yes America has a problem, a very large problem in fact, it goes back to our roots as Puritans. See, for my generation, the one that was young when Bush took office, I don't think the majority of us take our politically elected officials with anything approaching respect. If we do it's in a very skeptical way. So you end up either with very sarcastic skeptical people who just want to live their lives, or very fundamentalists thinking religious people who can't let go of the Puritan influence, no matter how failed an ideology that is. Don't get me wrong, I love my country. I grew up in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, and currently live in OKlahoma. I'm a somewhat conservative Democrat, I hold to that old west 2nd amendment notion that every American should be allowed to own and carry a gun. I fully support the death penalty, If a man rapes, murders, or harms a child, I believe he should be put to death, not out of any revenge ethic, I just think the world is a crowded enough place and we don't need to support someone who would harm others. BUt, I support a womans right to choose, think that my country has no business, none whatsoever in telling another nation or group of people how to live. In, other words, I'm one type of southerner, the kind that wants to protect his land and people and could really care less about how the rest of the world is doing. Would I like for the world to be one big happy planet, of course. But I dont hold out hope for it and I think America needs to fix whats wrong at home first. I should say also, like many my age and older, I hate George W. BUsh, I hate Carl Rove, Dick Cheney, Sean Hannity, and any man who would lie to a fundamentalist conservative base to further their own ambitions. One of my all time favorite qoutes is,'Why can't wars be fought by the assholes that started them?'
I'm voting for Obama in this election, I want to believe my country can move forward, that we are not locked into some stupid cycle of thinking that says we will always vote for the old white man who makes empty promises. Do I think Obama will be the great white light that others do? No, I want to but I think at heart, like his opponent he is an American politician, but I can hope, I can make room for the hope that he will actually be the good man he appears to be. As an american I am tired of being afraid and tired of not respecting those who try and lead our country. I'm tired of being governed based upon the ideas of people so uptight in their religious beliefs that they kicked out of their home country. We haven't won the war in Iraq yet, whatever that is supposed to mean anyway, and the current administration overlooked Afghanistan where we should have been in the first place looking for Bin Laden. A bigger share of the American public wants this battle in Iraq to end with the billions being spent, and now they'll probably be asked to pony up like amounts helping bebuild! We don't want a war monger in the White House - we need someone who can help rebuild the failing economy, and I very much doubt it's McCain. His mind is occupied on what he can attack Obama with next or maybe helping the plumber start his country western singing career.

Quite frankly before I even consulted the poor standards of education ib the USA it was the poor display of arguments from SP4 that drew my attention to it,the lack of any substance or quality raised serious doubts.

...then make an argument. Go compare what every nation in the world spends, per student, on education 1 through 10 and then, go compare qualification requirements for teachers in 1 thru 10 education, worldwide, with America's standards, then, go compare physical resuources worldwide.
You will find American elementary teacher standards some of the highest in the world.
You will find that America spends more, per student, than almost evey nation in the world.
You will find that America, has more resources, per student, than almost any nation on earth.
American have never spent more (or gotten less) on education than they do now. Our highest level of Primary education came when we had, virtually, no federal involvement in the education system (1962).
More foreign students list America as the place they'd like to go to college than any country on earth.
More top graduates, worldwide, wish to attend American Ivy league schools (especially in Europe) than any other universities in the world.

The American solution to everything is to either bomb it or throw money at it. Maybe the thing to do is to look at the system and see where it is failing. One quick scan of M&C comments will show you how effective the system ISN'T at producing educated, THINKING, rational citizens.
