Chicago, Illinois/Washington - US presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain planned one final race across the country on Monday as state officials prepared for record turnout in Tuesday's general election.
As Chicago braced for a throng of 1 million people at a public park in anticipation of Democrat Obama's victory Tuesday, Republicans were wishing them bad weather and a surprise electoral victory for the underdog McCain.
'I hope the million or so people who are planning to gather in Chicago have a long, cold night,' quipped Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who lost his Republican bid for the presidential nomination to Senator McCain.
Although election results are expected to start coming in about 0100 GMT Wednesday, western states could play a big role this year, with results expected to filter in well after 0300 GMT.
With massive voter turnout of as much as 90 per cent expected and new equipment in many states, the night could get much longer before a winner can be declared.
McCain and Obama were storming through a combined 10 states on Monday to shore up narrow margins and get out the vote in swing states. Between them and their key surrogates, they were set to cover a total of 22 states.
Obama, who would be the first African American president in US history, was the strong favourite heading into Tuesday's vote. An aggregate of major national polls compiled by realclearpolitics.com gave Obama 50.7 per cent to McCain's 44.3 per cent as of Sunday night.
But nationwide numbers are less important than capturing states with big electoral votes in the US' indirect election method. Battleground states include Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia - which hasn't voted Democratic since 1964 but is leaning toward Obama.
In Chicago, volunteers from across the city were spending the campaign's final hours rallying the vote for fellow Chicagoan Obama, who represents their state of Illinois in the Senate.
The campaign had attracted help ranging from high school students to grandmothers to those who knew Obama as young man working as a community organizer in the city's poor neighbourhoods.
Seventeen-year-old volunteer Robert Stuart III said he knows his efforts at a Chicago phone bank are part of a crucial last-minute drive to get out the vote. 'If I wasn't hopeful, I wouldn't be here,' he said.
Obama was to hold his election night rally at Grant Part along windy Lake Michigan, normally an ice box at this time of year. But weather forecasters expected record highs of up to 22 to 24 degrees Celsius - a good omen for the outcome for Obama fans.
Mayor Richard Daly told the Chicago Tribune that up to 1 million people could show up, though the campaign was only giving away 65,000 tickets to the secure area closest the stage. Thousands are expected to wait hours for prime spots.
'It's a historic event. If (people) want to be there, they should,' Daley said.

Just wait until the howling and wailing and gnashig of teeth coming from the republican'ts on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. I bet the GOP has their lawyers all torqued up and ready to go. Then watch their crap hit the fan. They are not only poor losers, but they are a poor representation of a section of humanity.
gnashig should have been gnashing.
Willing, unable, and incompetent!
Every vote for Obama is a vote for Joe Biden.
Reason - Obama will NEVER make 12 months.
From tree to White House in one big all-fours jump.
That if Obama wins he is going to replace the American Eagle on the US Presidential seal with a bunch of bananas ?
It really is funny how these died in the wool Republicans - with their Vietnam War mentality, their shoot it and bomb it bone headed stupidity and their inability to realise how the last 8 years have made America into the most despised nation in the world - cannot believe that the sensible people in the US have turned against them. They are in shock at the realisation they are going to lose, so they now revert to school playground level insults and Yah Boo.
If they wanted to persuade any remaining undecided voters to vote for Obama, they couldn't do a better job
Five reasons to vote against Obama? Only five? I could give you 50, no problem.
1. He wants to tax working Americans back to the Stone Age. He lies when he says he will cut taxes for 95 percent of Americans. You know it’s nonsense because they can’t keep their numbers straight from hour to hour. Obama claims everyone making under $250,000 is safe, or is it $200,000 (the infomercial) or $150,000 (Joe Biden)? On Friday, Gov. Bill Richardson cut it to $120,000.
Oh what a tangled web we weave. The fact is, the wealth-spreaders have vowed to do away with the Bush tax cuts. So everybody who pays any income taxes is going to take a hit. Plus, the friends of ACORN also plan to get rid of the cap on Social Security withholding taxes. That means everyone who makes over $102,700 will be slaughtered. I don’t have room to talk about capital gains.
2. The federal courts. In that famous 2001 Chicago radio interview, Obama wistfully talked about the need for the Supreme Court to break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution. You know, those pesky constraints that make us a nation of laws, not governed by the whims of the Friends of Obama, or Jeremiah Wright. You think Breyer and Ginsburg are beyond the pale? Obama’s crowd thinks they’re too conservative.
3. Teach the Obama-worshipping bumkisser media a lesson. Have they ever been more in the tank for anyone? They’re all worried about the Patriot Act and terrorists’ rights at Gitmo, but they had no problems printing flat-out lies about Sarah Palin. More recently, they took handouts from Obama thugs in Ohio on Joe the Plumber’s tax liens, divorce problems, child-support payments etc. - worse violations of privacy rights than anything that’s happened under the Patriot Act. But who cares - Joe the Plumber is just a typical white person.
3. The character of Barack Obama. You can always tell a Harvard man, but you can’t tell him much. He lectures you that your kids will have to learn Spanish - your kids, not his. He’s always railing about economic justice, but his illegal-alien aunt lives in poverty in Southie. Hey Barack, I thought charity began at home. Like John Kerry and Joe Biden, he doesn’t believe in donating to charity. Obama is a classic liberal hypocrite: He’ll give anybody the shirt off your back, not his.
4. Michelle Obama. Another pampered semi-literate Ivy Leaguer who still considers herself a victim, even with her $360,000-a-year job as diversity coordinator at a Chicago hospital. Can you stand four years of this harridan lecturing you on your greed?
5. All the other stuff I don’t have much room for. Where the heck was Barack Obama really born? Don’t forget his pal Bill Ayers dedication of his 1974 book “Prairie Fire” to, among others, Sirhan Sirhan. (Are you listening, Teddy and Caroline?) If Obama loses, Gwen Ifill’s book tanks. The return of the Fairness Doctrine to censor free speech. Joe Biden, a heartbeat away. And the No. 1 reason of all to vote against Barack Obama: If he loses it will drive the moonbats absolutely bonkers.
Well said, sir.
I second that!
'have made America into the most despised nation in the world - '
Better to be popular then right and free... Right?
'Right' and 'free' are rather subjective terms in the mind of Republicans who tries to keep the population at large in a state of fear and paranoia with perceived (and usually imaginary) threats from practically every nation on Earth.
''Right' and 'free' are rather subjective terms in the mind of Republicans ''
Not everything can be written off in terms of moral equivalence. There are some things that are 'wrong' and there are ways of making you less 'free'. Appeasing people who fly aircraft full of people in to buildings full of people is wrong and surrendering our sovereignty that people have fought, sacrificed and died to preserve and grow too international organizations to chase some Jr. High school notion of popularity is going to make you less free.
'who tries to keep the population at large in a state of fear and paranoia with perceived (and usually imaginary) threats from practically every nation on Earth.'
No, not every nation on earth. The thing is, If I were to get up and walk across the room I can see the crater that once was the world trade center where 3000 people were murdered because they were infidel Americans... So I am not being 'paranoid' when I say that there is a 'threat'.
Obama is not up to confronting that threat, or dealing with the economy, or preserving our sovereignty... Or many other things that he needs to be up to. With McCain we have a fighting chance.
Many posters accuse us God-faring and humanitarian Reps of being 'prejudiced', 'racist' or plain 'nigga bashers'.
We don`t all go around dragging these guys behind our trucks.
It just ain`t fair.
There`s a little lady going around these sites posting a huge article entitled 'PLEASE VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN'. Now you can`t be more polite than that can you when dealing with the masses uneducated rabble that make up the Dems, can you ? They don`t know what PLEASE, but the poor girl`s trying VERY hard.
Now for proof of our total compatibility with all these nigga`s ;-
We have had and still do have a number of these people in our administration, in very high positions of office.
NOW ! Why would we do that if we did`nt like them ? Not ALL nigga`s end up in prisons - most do, but not all. Some even swing around the White House balconies. Come in handy at times for dusting the ceilings.
THEN, the most racial-loving act of all - every one of us Reps have color televisions in our own homes. How can you be so cruel as to call us
'racist' with such a benevolent attitude towards coloreds ?
God how much more proof do you need ?
My own daughter even broke a lifetime of strict discipline and actually avoided running a nigga over on a road crossing the other day.
SEE you Dems - YOU`RE WRONG. SAY SORRY.
What is that basic tenet of America - 'All men are born equal' - guess not, if you're a Republican !
mcain is brilliant because uncle scrooge relly wants obama to win -anyone could of offered more but this idiot went the other way and talked about on and on about cutting money here there and everywhere-yhe only dscent idea he had was to spend trillions defeating those islam-fascists
Two reasons to not vote for McCain - his age and Palin. If he had picked someone else for VP, it might have been a completely different story. But there is no way I'd want her as President, and at his age, that could be a very big possibility.
You GOP people have been throwing mud for months ,it worked against you, suddenly you start begging for my vote against Obama..Your own McCain is so flawed that you are actually resigned to vote AGAINST Obama.
You represent a negligible candidate and you just admitted that for months.Forget it.
we shall stand up and fight for our nanny state-we will vote for obama-we shall stand up and fight for our small tax cut-we the poor will syand up and fight in iraq-only 16 months to go.
she would have advisors telling her what to do-she wants to win this guy mcain was showing the white flag-attacking acting stupid.
she would of done just as good as any of the men in the past-if you want more of the same-keep going on your merry way-some woman think that men are very intelligent-all men are good for are killing and raping-you woman wanted hillary-but not palin-as i said more of the same-for the next 30 years
mcain would of lost so badly if he didnt pick palin-they will welcomepalin back in alaska with open armspalin ten times more intelligent than mcain-but not as great as obama -hes giving out money who in there right mind would vote for-unclefight for empty pockets mcain.
