Obama halts 40-year Republican dominance of remote US town (Extra)

Nov 4, 2008, 4:32 GMT

Washington - In a departure from 40 years of Republican loyalty, 21 voters in remote northern New Hampshire gave a resounding yes to Democrat Barack Obama early Tuesday.

With 15 votes for Obama and six for McCain reported by broadcasters, the opening of the Dixville Notch polling station Tuesday just after midnight marked the opening of US elections that could put produce the first-ever African-American president.

By tradition since 1960, voters in Dixville Notch near the Canadian border cast the first votes in presidential elections. The only Democrat who took the precinct since then was Hubert Humphrey, who lost the 1968 national election to Richard Nixon.

Voters in nearby Hart's Location were also to have voted soon after midnight, a tradition the town started in the 1990s.

Other polls around New Hampshire will open at 6 am (1100 GMT) Tuesday, as will polls in Connecticut, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Maine and Vermont. The last polls will close in Alaska at 0500 Wednesday.

Obama is favoured to win Tuesday's vote. An aggregate of major national polls compiled by realclearpolitics.com gave Obama 51.2 per cent to Republican Senator John McCain's 44.2 per cent on Monday.

Dixville voters assembled in the historic ballot room of the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, an old-fashioned establishment where men must wear suits and ties to dine.

The voting room, just next to the billiard room, is a panorama of presidential history that includes photos of most presidents since Dwight Eisenhower, 1953-61, began visiting the hotel.

Tally boards dating back to the 1960 contest between Democrat John Kennedy and Republican Nixon are on display.

In January's intra-party votes, Democrats in Dixville chose Obama and Republicans chose McCain. New Hampshire is considered a swing state on Tuesday.

Congratulations.

You are about to elect a President who will give you a bigger government and more spending. Your new President will give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, drastically increase the number of H-1B visas, and eliminate E-verify at a time when millions of American Citizens are out of work. Your new Commander in Chief will keep American soldiers in Iraq against your will. Your new Chief Executive will borrow, spend, give away, and waste billions of dollars when the national debt is passing $12 trillion. Against your wishes your new President helped Bush give $1 trillion to the banks as his parting gift. No matter how much you object, Public Servant Number One will not listen and will continue to implement his own agenda. It doesn't matter if it's McCain or Obama.

i hear you...Nov 4th, 2008 - 09:02:18

But the rest of the country says there is nothing they can do about it...SHEEP...'Deal with it' LOL. If you vote for these people you can’t complain when they rip you off and kill your family and friends. Billions spent on a war that began under false pretences and your grandmother has to choose between saving your grandfathers life or giving up there home and retirement. Millions of Americans without jobs so corporations can send there jobs over sees to inhumane countries to save some money. Wall Street big dogs walking away with our hard earned tax money, while we cut funding on our children’s futures. Both these candidates are just talking puppets telling you what you want to hear to get them into office so they can make the companies that back them richer than anyone can imagine.

McCain Asks For Your Vote:

My Friend,

From the time I entered the Naval Academy at age seventeen I have been privileged and honored to serve my country.

Throughout my years of service, I've been faced with challenges where I could have taken the easy way out and given up. But I'm an American and I never give up. Instead, I choose to show courage and stand up and fight for the country I love. Today, I am asking you to stand with me and to fight for our country's future.

Our country faces enormous challenges and our next president must be ready to lead on day one. My lifetime of experience has prepared me to lead our great nation. I'm prepared to bring solutions to our economic challenges, bring our troops home in victory and improve our nation's healthcare system.

Time and time again, my country has saved my life and I owe her more than she has ever owed me. I have chosen to show my gratitude through a life of service to our country and tomorrow, you will have a choice before you.

I humbly ask you to make the choice that will allow me to serve my country a little while longer by casting your vote to elect me as your next President of the United States.

Finally, I ask that you never forget that much has been sacrificed to protect our right to vote. We must never forget those Americans who, with their courage, with their sacrifice, and with their lives, have protected our freedom. It is my great hope that you will exercise your right to vote as an American tomorrow.

I thank you for your kind support, your dedication to our cause, and most importantly I thank you for your vote.

With sincere appreciation,

John McCain

No John, no.

Let me tell you why. You are no longer a Maverick, you are only a sidekick. The sidekick of George W. Bush. In the last 8 years you have mostly supported the Bush 'train wreck', seldom veering either direction. You have spend the last 8 years supporting the idiots that completely smeared you with lies. They not only smeared you but they smeared your wife and family and then you hug the idiot that smeared you. You deserve to loose today and you deserve to loose big, and I can only hope that happens.

Black panthers intimidating white voters.Nov 4th, 2008 - 17:27:25

Black Panther intimidation at the polls?; NBPP: “We will be at the polls in the cities and counties in many states to ensure that the enemy does not sabotage the black vote, which was won through the blood of the martyrs of our people”

Fox News reported that two black panthers were at one location in Philadelphia “guarding” the doorway to a polling station. One carried a nightstick and confronted a citizen who had gone in to the polling place. That citizen called police (he was interviewed by the Philly correspondent for Fox). The citizen reported that police removed the black panther with the night stick, but the other, who lives in the area, remains near the door.”

The New Black Panther Party said yesterday it would send its members out to the polls to ensure its interests on Election Day:

Minister Najee Muhammad, national field marshal for the New Black Panther Party, and Uhuru Shakur, local chairman of the Atlanta chapter of the party, took turns reading statements from Dr. Malik Shabazz, leader of Black Lawyers for Justice and attorney for the party (yes, that Malik Shabazz)…

…”We will not allow some racists and other angry whites, who are upset over an impending Barack Obama presidential victory, to intimidate blacks at the polls,” Muhammad said. “Most certainly, we cannot allow these racist forces to slaughter our babies or commit other acts of violence against the black population, nor our black president.”

Muhammad added, “We must organize to counter and neutralize these threats using all means at our disposal. This is a great time for our people, and we must ensure that peace prevails for our people.”

JANE SKINNER: breaking election news, we have reports of possible voter intimidation in some way — pennsylvania. republicans saying that two black panthers have been blocking the doorway of one polling locations. rick, what are the details on this? what are you hearing?

RICK LEVENTHAL: i do not even know where to begin, but we have reached a polling place in the city of philadelphia. one of the two black panthers who was allegedly blocking the door is standing right over here, with an accused us of intimidating voters because we were here with a camera and microphone. he did not answer questions, other people here have confirmed that another person in black panther attire was holding a night stick and apparently the concern was that they were intimidating people who were trying to go inside to vote. a republican poll observer actually called the police, the police were here and we miss them, they came and left. that person called the police is here. why don’t you tell us — step down off the curb, if you do not mind. what is going on here?

CITIZEN: we got a phone call that there was intimidation going on. i walked up to the door, two gentlemen in black panther guard, one brandishing a nightstick, standing in front of the door. they closed ranks as i walked up. i am a veteran, that does not scare me. i went inside and found full- watchers, they said they had been here for an hour — i went inside and found poll-watchers, they said that they had said not to let people outside because black people are going to win no matter what. at that point, i spoke to him, we would not get into a fistfight, i said, and i called the police.

LEVENTHAL: the person with the nightstick was escorted away, which i just confirmed inside. but the implication is that you were telling me that the black panthers were there to intimidate white voters from coming to this location?

CITIZEN: anyone who is not going their way, i do not know. someone in front of a polling place with a nightstick, that is intimidating for all voters.
