Washington - US Attorney General Michael Mukasey was conscious and resting in hospital Friday after collapsing while delivering a speech, the Justice Department said.
Mukasey, 67, collapsed towards the end of an address before the Federalist Society at a Washington hotel Thursday night. He was given emergency first aid by his security detail and a doctor who happened to be on scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital.
'The attorney general is conscious, conversant and alert,' spokesman Peter A Carr said in a statement. 'His vital statistics are strong and he is in good spirits.'
US television network ABC quoted a lawyer in the room Thursday as saying Mukasey 'started struggling with [his] speech, slurring' before he slumped at the lectern and was quickly carried away.
Justice Department staff said Mukasey was breathing as he was brought to George Washington University Medical Centre, where physicians examined him.
President George W Bush nominated Mukasey, a former federal judge from New York, as attorney general in September 2007 and he took over at the Justice Department last November.
He replaced Alberto Gonzales, who resigned after a congressional investigation into the firing of nine attorneys and allegations he politicized the department.

These animals have no conscience, but once in a while it does bother these beasts. He might have had flash-back of GITMO prisoners
He wanted to prove a point. Right before passing out, towards the end of his address he was quoted as saying:
'The only honest attorney is an unconscious one'
When the police commissioner was at the lectern while a hooker was underneath it? That would have been good! Maybe he was just really drunk. I dunno, since I am not interested to read the whole article.
