Washington - In a radio address released the day before Christmas, US president-elect Barack Obama on Wednesday urged Americans to band together as the country battles a year-long economic recession that has led many to cut down on holiday spending.

'As we count the higher blessings of faith and family, we know that millions of Americans dont have a job. Many more are struggling to pay the bills or stay in their homes,' Obama said.

'From students to seniors, the future seems uncertain.'

Retailers are bracing for one of their worst holiday shopping seasons in decades. Chicago-based research firm ShopperTrak RCT Corp on Wednesday said retail store traffic in the weekend before Christmas plummeted 24 per cent compared to the same weekend in 2007.

Obama urged the country to unite for a 'common purpose,' reaffirming his campaign promise to tap into 'new ideas' in the wider community to lead the country out of the economic crisis.

'Now, more than ever, we must rededicate ourselves to the notion that we share a common destiny as Americans,' said Obama, who has promised to revive the economy with a massive fiscal stimulus package that could total as much as 850 billion dollars.

Obama is spending the holiday season in Hawaii with his family ahead of his inauguration January 20.

look like a third world country?Dec 25th, 2008 - 14:36:59

hmmm, lets think:
1: bankrupt!
2: breaking the very fundamentals of it's own system to save the few rich who messed up by sacrifising the poor people who actually work for a living!
3: taking away the human rights of its own people, monitoring and spying on its own people, and braking all international laws on human rights!
4: commiting acts of deadly agression and genoside and using weapons of mass distraction against poor people all over the globe for over a century, and planning to follow on that path to the very end!

The last on the list was actually the one that oppened the eyes of the global community to the true nature of the USA, the so called country of the free, cause you see, countries of free people don't mass murder the people of the poorer countries and rob them of everything, freedom, dignity and any wealth they had, and on top of that claim that they are there to help them!
It is a dead give away you see, one only wonders how come the very own people of the USA are weaking up to reality so late, didn't they ever wondered so far that if their goverment kills millions globally and is always waging wars, that there must be something fundamentaly wrong with that?,( i guess the mass media in the USA did a great job of presenting mass murder as a heroic act of patriotism, and covering the real carnage both to their own and to their victims ).
Well it doesn't matter anymore, its too late now, what goes around, eventually comes around!
At least people from third world countries are used to beeing poor, lets see now how will the great america fares, will it still make hollywood films about how it saved the world about a gazillion times so far and how great it is to be an american! (if that actually means anything to anybody anymore).

So far, it seems like Obama is making an especially good impression with a big percentage of the public on his choices. Any criticism needs to be held off for a few months to give him a chance to try to turn some of the country's problems around. It took Bush and his cronies 8 years to scramble things up, so it won't be remedied overnight.

SP4: well Mr. BakerDec 27th, 2008 - 16:26:55

Criticism for Mr. Bush started immediately and I see no reason why Mr. Obama should have it any different. Also, let's look at one of his first moves i.e. cancelling the Ares space program.

His people have been trotting this out for a reaction. If true, he is willing to cancel at the hardware phase of this program, wasting every dime of the public's money spent on development.

Bush, correctly, put a wooden stake through the Shuttle program and, correctly, started a new, more reliable and safer vehicle. This is, of course, the product of a clear thinker. Now comes a man with less experience than Sarah Palin, and his Clinton minions, wanting to cancel the only manned exploration system available.

Go trot that out to the public Mr. Baker and see how it flies. Regardless of how they 'feel' it's wrong headed.

Go slink away with the few other Bush hanger ons. He also will never admit to his mishandling of most everything he touched these last 8 years.
Now go have some left over turkey and take a nap.
