Four bombs defused after chic Aspen resort town evacuated
Jan 1, 2009, 22:08 GMT
Washington - The chic Rocky Mountain resort of Aspen, Colorado, was evacuated and four homemade bombs were defused during a dramatic New Year's Eve that unfolded like a scripted drama in the brisk mountain air.
In the end, the suspect, Jim Blanning, was later found dead in an apparent suicide, the Aspen Times reported Thursday online.
Blanning apparently delivered bombs and threatening letters to Wells Fargo Bank and Vectra Bank on Wednesday, saying 'Aspen will pay a horrible price in blood' if they didn't pay him 60,000 dollars each in used 100-dollar bills, the Times reported.
Aspen Assistant Police Chief Bill Linn told reporters Thursday that the evacuation alert was lifted at 5 am New Year's Day.
A bomb squad from the nearby large town of Grand Junction, Colorado, disabled four handmade bombs late Wednesday and early Thursday, Linn said. The other two bombs were found in an alleyway.
Blanning was found dead in his Jeep Cherokee at the gate to a pass that is closed during the winter.
Blanning, who was 71, was a longtime resident of Aspen who spent time in prison for his conviction of fraudulent land sales, the Aspen Times wrote.
Linn said police had to close the downtown in the 'interests of safety' despite the fact that New Year's Eve was to have brought some help to struggling restaurants and bars that have lost money during the recession.
'It's hard to actually quantify (the danger.) There were four actual bombs in downtown Aspen. How dangerous is that? Dangerous enough,' he was quoted as saying.
Blanning was identified from a security photo taken as he delivered the bombs and letters to bank employees.

..after all, no one plants bombs anywhere else!
...but 45,000 people a MONTH die in the Congo.
Talk about a lack of perspective!
Or the perspective of 1.3 million Iraqui civilian deaths since the American invasion
a man with a paper asshole ...sp4 is it
..that is another one of those bullsh-t numbers, the Libnazi left keeps pimping, like 5 million homeless in 1980, or the goofy est. 600,000 number in Iraq the brit press pimped in 2006 only to have it completely discredited. Now were supposed to believe after the 600,000 another 600,000, somehow, died as well only the proof simply does not exist.
Then were supposed to buy into the fact that it was the US that killed them all, another myth when the fact is Irai-on-Iraqi deaths were far more prevelant.
Libnazis have a whole roll of the numbers. The global warming myth is a big one. The larger the lie, the more people like you, Fred, who wish to believe it.
Now, now Fred - don't upset SP4 so early in the year. You know he has all these 'real' figures at his fingertips - like the boomimg American economy, the auto companies making record profits, the excellent property growth, no homeless or hungry anywhere in America, the safe and trustworthy banking system, McCain (almost) winning the election, the wonderful weather...
He really does believe all this rubbish, so don't spoil his year unril he's had a chance to injest a chemical little help and invent some more fantasies
he's still reeling from the McCain/Palin loss and not having his idol Bush in Washington.
I'm not worried about Republicans. They have a new strategy:
We're just going to raise the money, run to the Obama administration and BUY senate seats. After all, nothing gets emulated like success!
Hallibuton...hahahahahahahahahahahaha!
...everyone drink every time sp4 says something smart...works better than any rehab you could ever go to...
his spelling is becoming atrocious!
..to see how long we can wait before one of the above can do a meaningful post.
