Man jailed after selling daughter, 14, for beer

San Francisco - A Mexican man living in California has been jailed after allegedly selling his 14-year-old daughter for marriage in exchange for cash, beer and meat and then calling police when the groom failed to honour the deal, officials said Tuesday.
The arrest occurred in the central California town of Greenfield, about 225 kilometers south of San Francisco. The town is home to many immigrants from Oaxaca, Mexico, and the case represented a clash between California law and the traditional culture of the immigrants, according to the local paper, the Salinas Californian.
Marcelino de Jesus Martinez, 36, was apparently unaware of any problems when he sold his daughter to Margarito de Jesus Galindo, 18, in exchange for 16,000 dollars, 160 cases of beer, 100 cases of soda, 50 cases of Gatorade, two cases of wine, and six cases of meat, according to Greenfield police.
'The 14-year-old juvenile moved in with Galindo, and when payments were not received, the father, Martinez, called Greenfield PD to bring back the daughter,' according to a police statement.
After an investigation, the girl was returned to her parents, but the father was jailed on charges of receiving money for causing a person to cohabitate. The 18-year-old was charged with statutory rape.

Wow kinda cheap even for a guy from OAXACA - money, beer, meat staples across MEXICO and in some parts of the USA. MAYBE HE DIDN'T WANT TO COME THROUGH BECAUSE SHE WAS 'UGLY' OR MAYBE JUST BAD IN THE SACKAROONI OR COULDN'T SPELL OR SUMTHIN IMPORTANT LIKE COOK/CLEAN???

The article says this is 'the traditional culture of the immigrants'. Do Mexicans really do this?
but they don't stone their children to death for dating a boy from another tribe or region like the middle eastern peaceful religion peoples.

In some cultures the wife's family has to give money, livestock, etc., to the groom's family, and maybe this is much the same, and on the other hand, there are loonies in all societies who go the limits - not so unusual.
how everything seems to have a common denominator of race for americans... no one even mentions this poor girl and what her life is like knowing her 'father' sold her... I'm sad that you can't see a face beyond a colour.

What a shame - and they didn't even charge the father with child abuse? Wow if these are the kind of people we are allowing into this country we have big big problems. I am so glad to know that my insurance premiums are paying for people like this to get translators and that I cannot find a job because they are all bilingual. A woman came up to me at the library and wanted help filling out her housing application and she could not even speak English. Why are we getting stuck paying for all these services for people who are not even here legally? We have everything to lose and nothing to gain with this open border policy.
