Washington - Barack Obama was sworn in on Tuesday as the 44th president of the United States, making history as the first African American to hold the job while taking control of a country facing a major economic crisis and daunting challenges abroad.

Obama, 47, took the oath of office shortly after noon at the steps of Congress in front of millions of onlookers who braved sub-freezing temperatures along the National Mall, a vast park that stretches from the Capitol building to the Lincoln Memorial.

Obama recited the oath read by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, followed by a rendition of 'Hail to the Chief,' before he stepped to the podium to give his inaugural address.

Tears and cheers accompanied the moment in the crowd.

During the swearing-in, he used his full name, Barack Hussein Obama, an open gesture of recognition of his Muslim father, who was Kenyan, and a facet of his background that was underplayed during his election campaign against Republican John McCain.

Obama laid his hand on a Bible used in 1861 by president Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War president who freed the slaves. Lincoln's 200th birthday is being celebrated this year and has formed a keystone of the inaugural theme.

Standing nearby was outgoing president George W Bush, who leaves office as one of the most unpopular presidents in recent times. When he walked out on the stage, a loud boo went up from the crowd.

Earlier, Obama and wife Michelle along with vice president-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, attended church. The Obama couple joined President George W Bush and First Lady Laura Bush at the White House for the traditional coffee. They travelled together to the ceremony outside Congress.

Former presidents Jimmy Carter, George HW Bush and Bill Clinton and their wives looked on as the nation celebrated the historic moment.

Obama takes office amid high expectations that he can turn around the economy that shed more than 1 million jobs last year and is bogged down in the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Obama inherits wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a bruised US image in the world after eight years of the Bush presidency.

'Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America,' Obama said.

Obama's message of change and hope propelled him to the presidency, but in the days leading up to the inauguration he has tried to dampen expectations of immediate results. He has warned the economy will likely 'get worse before it gets better.'

Obama has already begun consulting with members of Congress on a 825-billion-dollar stimulus plan to boost the economy by investing in infrastructure projects, developing alternative energy and other projects to get people back to work.

Among the first acts Obama is expected to take is ordering the closure the Guantanamo detention centre at the US Navy base in Cuba for holding suspects in the war on terrorism. The prison, where most of the remaining detainees have been held for years without charges, has tarnished America's standing in the world. Obama has cautioned that the actual closure took take months or as long as a year.

Revellers travelled to Washington from all over the United States and the world to witness history. Many began flocking to the Mall well before sunrise amid some of the tightest security the nation's capital has ever seen.

'I could have seen this on TV but I wanted to be here to see hope, change and history in the making,' said Yvonne Gill, 43, a nurse from Notre Dame, Indiana.

Barriers were set up all around the downtown area to block vehicle traffic as the crowd took to the streets and waited in long lines to claim a spot in the bleachers along the parade route Obama will take along Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.

Members of Congress handed out as many as 240,000 tickets for seating and close-in standing areas to their constituents who came to town. Potentially millions more spectators without tickets will be able to watch from greater distances along the length of the mall or on giant video screens.

Cynthia McNeal, 50, an African American office secretary from North Carolina, said she came to honour her parents and the 1960s struggle for civil rights led by Martin Luther King Jr.

'I'm here to witness history,' McNeal said.

As much as the enthusiasm on the streets was an outpouring of support for Obama, it was also a sign people were ready to move on from Bush, who is leaving office with the lowest job approval rating in decades.

'Goodbye Bush, Goodbye Bush,' Metro riders continuously chanted at one exit station near the festivities.

Obama will spend Tuesday evening attending various black tie inaugural balls throughout the city, then will get down to the nation's business during his first full day of office on Wednesday, when he will meet with his top economic advisers.

On Thursday, Obama is expected to meet with General Ray Odierno, the top commander in Iraq, and General David Petraeus, chief of US Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East, South Asia and parts of Africa, CNN reported.

Barack Obama as next President of The United States of America

The die is cast and for reasons that only a privileged few know, you Sir, will be the next President of the United States of America. Your next 4 years will be a turning point in US history and planet earth. CHANGE, your advisors and high stake investors offer the nation will undoubtedly be the same rhetoric and empty promises that make up a political campaign, that campaigns for appointment for any public office in America.

The White House will be the Black House to some, the Aryan Brothers of America will not be so happy, but yet will blame you and your staff if you fail, which will reinforce their belief that the Aryan Nation is the true leader for America. The religious zealots will be busy bees making nests to survive the onslaught of lies, corruption and deceit. Business enterprises and other competing nations will capitalize off of your inexperience in the art of corruption and murder. The organized crime organizations from different nations including our own will benefit from the lack of control over national crime.

Military governments including our own will test your tolerance to pain and deception and trick you into needless and profitable domestic and international conflict. You will no doubt attempt to colorize your staff to soften the race conflict once in office.

As President you will be President. Nations will respect you only for your title of office. Americans will soon see after your appointment as President that your intentions were manipulated by those that make the rules. You will fill the spot in history as planned, and nothing more.

You will never while in office be able to pull the troops from conflict in any land we are engaged in. As a matter of fact we as a nation will be engaged in a new conflict of war, which will galvanize Americans to seek a different form of government and a different and honest Congress.

You will attempt to shore up Americas problems with false promise and lies, because you cannot directly affect the CHANGE you promised.

Your frustration will be your downfall while in office, and your co-dependence on those that you trust will also add to your demise.

Our Armed Forces in rank will respect you as good soldiers they are, but those under them will not, and for good reasons, that only a good soldier knows.

America will not be America until its government respects the People, and tells the truth. America is a Republic, not a Democracy or Fascist Government or is it?

Until you can walk thru the streets and neighborhoods of America unaided by Secret Service or any other law enforcement agency you will not be respected by the many, only by the fearful and selfish few. Americans can protect their leaders if they are honest and respectful of the people they were elected to serve. Our Government has forsaken us for many hundreds of years, and now we will wait until your 4 years are finished for us to come to fruition.

CHANGE FOR AMERICA FOR AMERICANS!
The American Republic
A Sovereign Republic

PREEMPTIVE wars! Wars based on lies. Illegitimate wars. The protectors are actually the deliverers of injustice!

Hypocrisy drives the system.

The balance sheet never lies. President Bush is a mentally-ill credit holic addict just like the idiots that mortgage their future with subprime loans.

Obama promises to continue that legacy of debt spending.

If you ever met anyone with a credit card mental illness then you would be able to easily identify the same traits in Bush, and Obama.

Just like a drug addict or an alcoholic, they can not perceive limits. It is an actual mental illness.

Bush was and IS an alcoholic, which is a mental disease of the mind. The same trait is demonstrated in debt spending.

Like an alcoholic, a debt-holic needs to hit rock bottom and exhaust every possible means of getting free money before they are forced to come to terms with their mental illness and then they need to cut up the credit cards, or in the case of Bush, Obama and congress: They need to pass a balanced budget amendment to the constitution.

Today we have a new president ... And Thank God we have a new President!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to school in the South in the 60's ... my first day of first grade was the first day of forced integration in our state.

Most of the white parents in our neighborhood thought it was terrible ... my father (thankfully) took me aside and explained that a man is much more than what you can see in the color of his skin.

I'm forever grateful for my fathers wisdom ... which was not popular in the 'white south' then.

To see things move from that moment to now, helps me feel better about my country ... and for the last 8yrs especially, I've not been very proud of my country's leadership ...

But today, we as Americans, are closer to living our nations stated ideals ... 'That all men are created equal'.

I'm proud of that.

Proud on a deeply profound level.

And I'm hopeful that we now have a president who's smart enough, and skilled enough to begin the difficult task of repairing the damage done to our nation by George Walker Bush.

Of course people like Lance are gonna keep arguing with themselves about their incorrect assumptions (people like Lance will never 'get it') ... I do find it amusing when they argue with themselves about their incorrect assumptions ... but today we have an opportunity for good things to happen.

We haven't had that in a long time.

Best of luck to you President Obama ... God knows you will need it.

All men and women are not created equal, each has special distinctions. Some are smarter, some are not, etc., etc. What you say is completely superficial.

Well that is the million dollars question!
The answer is simple really! It’s just that the stuff he said were stupid and were meant for stupid people.
So anyone would look stupid in that situation, tell Einstein to go on the podium and convince people about the stuff Bush was trying to convince them and spurt out those nonsense that he was spurting and tell me what he would look like, he would look like an idiot too! So Bush had to actually play the idiot and talk like an idiot in order to get away with the nonsense that he was spurting.

Much of what Lance says is common sense, logical and true.

If politicians and leaders had the same outlook on running a country and civilisation, the world would be a better and safer place to live in.

OK some of Lance`s rhetoric is pure shit, but he is no different to the rest of us - we all write shit but many lack the credibility of Lance`s general train of thought.

His views on religion, with his constant crap about Christian`s and Muslim`s is so stupid that SHIT is not sufficient to describe them, but it will have to do for now.

HOMO SAPIENS are responsible for all the messes, tragedies or successes of the civilised world. MAN alone creates them all - THERE ARE NO GOD`S.

Ask any Astronaut if they have seen one out there ! As far as I know, they do not have booze on board, so you should get a correct answer.

Beyond Earth is just INFINITY - a descriptive term that not a single man on Earth can either describe, explain or understand. The human brain simply cannot comprehend it.

So to resolve the huge mess America and the world are in due to man`s incompetence, MAN alone will have to get out of it.

Placing false trust and faith in some non-existent sky fairy, whatever the creature is called, will not solve a bloody thing.

Of course you are right. Humans kill, their stupid superstitions are just an excuse to murder and wreak havoc on the world.

Buying into a god is a manifestation of human ignorance and greed. Humans want to be better than other humans, they want to go to heaven while lesser of their kind, in their eyes, go to hell. They use religion as an excuse to kill pagan savages.

No self respecting god or goddess would put up with the constant crap of humans killing each other. They especially would not put up with the mightiest weapon might known to mankind ... the U.S. arsenal of WMDs. That is an abomination. Yet, christians use the excuse of fighting evil and followers of other gods to justify the stockpiling of that abomination and its use to mass kill their opponents.

Religion is a though. It is the people of those religions that kill.

There are a few things that can get me to stop posting:

(1) If christians stopped killing muslims, or admitted that they mass kill muslims and thus ended their longstanding hypocrisy.

(2) If Obama decreased instead of increased the debt.

Neither of those two will happen because christians like to kill, and Obama is a self confessed credit-holic addict.

I believe your only option is to wait for Armageddon, which I am sure many christians wish would come sooner rather than later, and for which Obama may hasten along with the normal stupid moves presidents make once they are seated in the absolutely corrupting power of the superpower leader.

Why is it that Liberals seem to be able to point to everyone else's hate but are blind to their own?

Go inform yourself Dale. In your case, it's a full time job.

You Americans may be surprised to hear that there are many Brits who do not share the same uphoria that is shown in America. It's nothing to do with any dislike they have for Obama it's just that we have had a leader that was all charm and promise but in reality we found a liar and incompitant who left the country in a mess and then jumped ship just before everything went pear shaped. His name was Tony Blair.

Ashole 103 up, 6 down
A person with symptoms of multiple personality disorder who uses their multiple personalities to harass and annoy others online. A person who steals other people's work online and calls it their own under another one of their names.
Ashleigh is an ashole who used her multiple personality alias 'Rusello' to write a bad review on many people's fanfiction and fanart. That ashole is making a lot of enemies online by taking other people's art and calling it her own. Ashleigh the ashole downloaded hentai anime for the pleasure of one of her multiple personalites named 'Chris'.

2. AShole 6 up, 9 down
Someone with Asperger's Syndrome who is exhibiting social (more typical) or mental (rarer) impairment characteristic of said syndrome. Pronounced either as 'ah-sohl' or, if you need to be sure you're perceived as delivering the proper term (or if you're southern), 'aye-ess-hole.'

It may be noted that despite the similarity between the term 'asshole' and 'AShole,' AShole is only partially an insult; it is also a partial pardoning of whatever the aspie did to be described by this term.
She won't hug anyone. She's being a total AShole.

May we all rise to the occasion of meeting future challenges that threaten to insure our eventual downfall.

1. Lance is so right about the credit addiction. So wrong about it being a mental illness. We are corrupted by our own greed and wants. We can overcome this in due time.

2. Under our Constitution, so called 'Pagans', have a right to exist, as long as they do not violate the rights of others, the same goes for any religious or atheistic belief. There are those under the banner of Christianity who do not kill. One other point, do we not have the right to defend ourselves from our enemies, do we let our enemies destroy us totally?

3. Because one was an alcoholic, does not necessarily mean one is one now. Because one was a thief, does not necessarily mean one is one now. Because one made a mistake, does not necessarily mean one will repeat such a mistake. Constantly placing guilt and labeling upon certain people and sects of people is not good for the rehabilitation of such peoples.

4. I will stop posting if all religious and atheistic groups stop killing anyone. If I then continue to post, I accept your reason for calling me a hypocrite.

…Give this President the endurance, wisdom, courage, humbleness, to render the best possible decisions for our nation, allies and enemies. Give this President the vision of our hopes and dreams…

'Because one was an alcoholic, does not necessarily mean one is one now'

... as a general rule, all alcoholics have to not drink alcoholic because they are addicted to it. They have a lifelong addiction to alcoholic and are always an alcoholic. There is no way, as of yet, to turn off the 'alcoholic gene'. They simply have to stop drinking it entirely. Once an alcoholic always an alcoholic. It is just that they don't consume their drug, so they don't exhibit the alcoholic feature.

Same with credit-holics: They need to cut up their credit cards. There is no way, as of yet, to turn off the compulsion. They can keep it in check by removing the temptation: Cut up the credit cards or pass a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget.

Sometimes medication can help stymie the addiction too, but the genes can not be altered as of yet. In the future, scientist may have a gene therapy technique for it so there is hope.

If the President succeeds, then America succeeds - it's as simple as that.
For those who are hoping he doesn't do that, may you get everything you deserve.

While your thoughts are fully formed and your opinions flow like a river your ignorance shines brighter than any of the other points or critiscisims. If you cut back on the A-hole opinions and focus more on the point you're trying to make....this way...you won't ganrner any more enemies and haters.
I think you should step back and read more, learn how to spell and become more empathetic or sensitive to fully become a sentient human being. Because right now you sound inhuman and demonic like someone whose making a point about genocide or Heiling Hitler.
