Obama affirms pro-abortion stance, but no policy reversals

Washington - President Barack Obama entered one of the most contentious US moral issues, making a statement Thursday in support of abortion rights on the anniversary of a court case that carved out a constitutional right to end pregnancy in the first trimester.
Obama made no policy announcements in connection with the anniversary. US abortion-rights activists had hoped that he might overturn former president George W Bush's ban on federal funding for international family planning organizations that offer abortions. Bush's executive order on the issue came on just the second day of his presidency in January 2001.
Obama said that he remained 'committed to protecting a woman's right to choose,' but also said all Americans should be 'united' behind efforts to reduce the need for abortions and prevent unintended pregnancies.
Tens of thousands of socially conservative, 'pro-life' demonstrators, meanwhile, held a rally against abortion Thursday on Washington's National Mall.
The Supreme Court ruled 36 years ago in Roe vs Wade that anti- abortion laws were an unconstitutional violation of women's right to privacy, becoming one of the most divisive rulings ever by the court.
Reversing the court's decision has been one of the chief political goals of social conservatives ever since.
Obama, who taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago, said the decision 'stands for a broader principle: That government should not intrude on our most private family matters.'

On the other hand, do not be too harsh on Obama. He has a real good idea here: Liberals are all concerned about the poor and it is far easier to fund killing the child in the womb as opposed to actually raising a decent human being, so funding pre-mee death industry is far more efficent.

I had an abortion 20 yrs ago & learned the sad & difficult way that it was not my 'right' to chose the date of death for that life. Would I have made a different decision if the Dr. had used a gun to kill the life w/in me?? I regret my fear & selfishness that led to such a choice then. Abortion is the murder of convenience. There is no other way to look at it.
I beg to differ on that opinion, and that's just it - there are a lot of opinions and one thing isn't necessarily right for everyone. There are a lot of decisions made to have an abortion that are because of reasons other than convenience - some very tragic stories. We just can't lump everyone together, and that is what the pro=life people are trying to do.
Most people value life, and that also means a mother who, for some personal reason has to have an abortion, and has other children she is responsible for and needs to keep her own life to care for them - and on and on it goes. People have to quit trying to live other people's lives.
